COCO

While many queens have risen through the ranks much easier these days, there is a group of drag legends that rose to that title of legend by their own hands and talent, with the like of Lady Bunny, Varla Jean Merman, Dina Martina And Miss Richfield. While many queens have come and gone...there all still here. And like those hard working queens is Coco Peru! Coco has been a gay household name for over 30 years, where she got her start in the late 80's as a downtown favorite in the cabaret world of New York, where she produced, directed and wrote her own shows, and has since enjoyed an expansive career. She's toured the world and has gotten over 10 millions views for her You Tube videos, and her Instagram shows have been a god send while in quarantine. She is one queen on my list every gay man should see in person...I love Coco's style , but come for the bitterness and snark. I've never been disappointed with a Coco show. Coco is considered "the hostess with that something extra. But more importantly she has never forgotten her roots and history and has been a passionate activist and gives unflagging support of the LGBT and fierce dedication to AIDS-related charities in particular. But those facial expressions and snark get me! And we can't forget that trademark flip. And any bitch who can eat off a plate with whore on it, is alright in my book.

And this video will show just how similar Coco and I are in an interview process.
As the Mistress of the Casa du Borghese I sure can see where she is coming from. Much like Coco auditioning choir boys, auditioning houseboys is just never easy for me. But I just hope my boys too have been practicing their singing. Otherwise caroling is going to be the talk of the town again.

  2. I love Coco because she's got that 60s mod Marlo Thomas That Girl Loves Lucy vibe.
And I'm with her about the Tiny Tots ruining everything!
The choir has something special especially that middle guy.

  3. Love her! I could just watch her facial expressions with the sound muted and still laugh my lack of ass off! Beautiful eyes.

    1. I agree Deedles! Her facial expressions alone crack me up. She was pretty funny on Will and Grace when it was on.

    2. I know, right? Even that tiny spot she had in To Wong Foo, stood out. Loved her on Will & Grace.

    3. Yes, in Too Wong Foo, she kept right in step with her persona. I think that's why I love most of these more seasoned queens. They are very rarely, if ever, seen out of drag and their alter ego. I was like that myself when I did drag. Only my closest friends knew who the Mistress Borghese really was. Most of town had for some time no idea what I was like out of drag or even looked like.

    4. Yeah, I noticed the facial expressions, too. If you could somehow resurrect Laurel and Hardy from the dead, I'd love to see them along side Coco (though not necessarily in their undies.)

  8. I know, here I go again. But this is why I have far more repsect for Coco and these queens you mention. They are the foundation of drag and had to do it all, and do it all. They don't rely on just fishy looks, lip synchs and outlandish looks. It will be sad when the day comes they aren't here anymore.

But coco is pure delicious confection for the eyes and yes....that snark.

    1. You don't need to sell me. These queens are all so multi talented. While the queens on drag race have talent, with exception to a hands full of real break out talent....most are talented one trick ponies. When I have gone to a show, and many are part of a town's drag show, the local talent is far more entertaining then the drag race head line in some cases. If you want tips, dance your ass off ...don't just stand and lip-synch and head off stage. I can't stand a queen who stands on stage for a minute and then into crowd to gets tips...while most of the audience stares at a blank stage. That's not a good performer.

  11. When I first saw Coco Peru years ago, it took me awhile to realize that he was a drag queen.

One of the legends for sure.

  14. To be around that long and still look that good, well, Bravo! I'm Loving the critiques on the Queens and learning more about the History of Drag. I think I saw my first Drag Show in Vegas in the very late 1970's. Legendary Queens really Pioneered the Art Form and paved the way for Future Generations to Entertain and Mainstream the Shows to a broader appreciative audience. I hardly know anyone now who hasn't seen or known about some of the more Famous Queens. I mean, who doesn't know or hasn't heard about the likes of RuPaul?

    1. Your right Dawn. These queens are amazing and are the foundation so to speak. My favorite queen Lady Bunny arrived in NYC with RuPaul as they had been roommates in Atlanta. Both very well crafted, but where RuPaul went mainstream, where Bunny choose to keep her drag roots ensconced in community on a more inactive and accessible way.

  15. Ummm... when are auditions? I could clean up after the elephants or be the drool-cup bearer. I know you need the latter, because wherever the Mistress goes? Men drool.

Coco... I mentioned her yesterday over at Sixpence's place. Panettoni. Man, we are all syc'd up. Coco had a show with Leslie Ann Warren and Veronica Cartwright, the other day. I missed it :( Meant to see it. I think the boyfriend did watch. I adore her, and while I think she would look down on her nose at me, I sure think she'd make a wonderful friend. Tension Tamer Tea. We're both herbal tea drinkers... :) So, that would be a start. Hee hee. Speaking of YouTube faves... what is going on with Drew Droege and his Chloe? I want new ones.

  17. Coco's snark and attitude reminds me of someone else I know.......but she is fabulous. The staying power of Coco and the other queens you mention says it all. I just caught Coco the other day on her show with Varla Jean Merman. High-lious.

  18. Oh dear. I of course love her style and that hair flip is to die for, but when I saw her on Will and Grace, I thought it was really a woman playing a drag queen!!!! Since then I have you tubed her and I thank you for bringing her to me. She has had me in stiches. I have the feeling you two together would be beyond wisecrack and snark. The last picture is gorgeous.
