This is what happens when you have five days off, one tends to get very relaxed, and laze about. But it's that what the holidays are for? I have one friend who has started running around like a chicken with his head cut off already, doing this and doing that...I told him to slow down and sit and enjoy a movie or cook or something, but with him it's always got to be doing something work related or around the house.... relax I tell him. Another nice Christmas has passed, a nice time with my uncle and some of his kids. I got some of these beaded, jeweled ornaments that had been my late aunts. I know some were made in Japan, and others are handmade, likely by her and some friends, while sitting around a kitchen table, creating these gems. I haven't seen any of these in years. And it now seems it's another international holiday, the birthday of our Patron Saint here at the Casa du Borghese, Magdalene Dietrich who was born this date in 1901. The German- American actress, whose beauty, jaw-dropping glamour, voice, aura of sophistication, and languid sensuality made her the world's most glamours film star ever. And I suspect we will never see the likes of it or her again...not even close. Happy Birthday to our beloved Marlene Dietrich.
Yes, it was snowing like hell up here, too!
ReplyDeleteHi Maddie, In case you were wondering what has happened to me: I am, back home after a short hospital stay. i will write more soon, but I am now home.
ReplyDeleteOh no!!!! You went back in again since I talk to you last week?
DeleteI shall give you a call.
She's not bad for 120, is she?
ReplyDeleteSnow? Inevitably, here in London, it's raining. Again. Jx
Do you just keep the umbrella up permanently?
Deleteshe is a dear!
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning mood board today and can't think of a better holiday to celebrate today. I too havent seen those beaded ornaments in years.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am A HUGE FAN of Marlene Dietrich. Unlike her professional celebrity, which was carefully crafted and maintained, Dietrich's personal life was, for the most part, kept out of public view. She was fluent in German, English, and French. And a well-known bisexual, enjoyed the thriving gay bars and drag balls of 1920's Berlin.
Stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Marlene Dietrich quote- ""If God created this world, he should review his plan."
Gosh...and she sure wasn't far off either.
DeleteThose beaded ornaments are beautiful! You'll have fun displaying them, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI adore Marlene Dietrich too, not only for all the reasons you list, but also because she was a fierce anti-Hitler anti-fascist in World War II.
Much like another deep beauty, Heddy Lamar, she had a brain and used it.
DeleteThose beaded ornaments are amazing. If I ever finish my needlepoint project, I might tackle making those. I've always related to Marlene's movie line "I vant to be alone".
ReplyDeleteSorry, but it was Greta Garbo who said that, in the 1932 movie Grand Hotel, and, as if the line was some sort of prophecy, then chose the life of a recluse about ten years later. The confusion is understandable, as the two actresses do look a lot alike, but Marlene was waaaayyyyy more outgoing. She eventually did become a recluse, too, but only when she was in her 80s, and not in her 40s like Garbo.
DeleteWell, I think I'm too destined to become a recluse...mostly likely somewhere between the two. They were son to something.
DeleteYou're right Kirk. I always get Greta and Marlene confused.
DeleteIn her final film, Marlene sings "Just a Gigolo" to David Bowie. Surreal!
DeleteI loved Marlene Dietrich, Never been a more gorgeous actress. My favorite quote of her's was "Without tenderness, a man is uninteresting." I tend to agree.
ReplyDeleteI remember those beaded ornaments. I think we had some when I was little too. Love the wreath shot!!!
It's getting up into the high 50's this week, the snow is as good as gone.Friends in Bucks County said they didn't get any.
DeleteTo my idol thee divine, let's hope this never happens to us
ReplyDeleteShe may look a little worn out
She may have a couple of gray hairs
A little ragged, a little haggard
A few wrinkles here and there
But you should've seen her 21 years ago
She would've captivated you
Why, she was Miss Subway of 1952
She had a stunning figure and her hips weren't any bigger than her bust line
She's gotten just a little saggy and her skin's a trifle baggy
But there was a time when everything was perfectly placed
She had a beautiful face
She may look a little made up
Especially around the eyes
A little groupie, a little droopy
But once they were quite a prize
Yes, you should've seen her 21 years ago
They were a devastating view
Why, she was Miss Subway of 1952
She had a million men around her
Giving gifts that would astound her
Why, she couldn't even walk down the street
Yeah, she had lovers by the dozens
And she even had some cousins
Who just couldn't stop throwing themselves at her feet
She was so dainty and sweet
She may look a little worn out
She may have a couple of gray hairs
A little ragged, a little haggard
A few wrinkles here and there
But you should've seen her 21 years ago
She would've captivated you
Why, she was Miss Subway of 1952
Wah-wah-wah, wah-wah-wah, wah-wah-wah
Wah-wah-wah, wah-wah-wah, yeah, yeah
Was that directed at Marlene or me handsome? lmao!
DeleteAnd you have all Marlene’s earrings!
ReplyDeleteThey'd make for stunning baubles wouldn't they?
DeleteLove the wreath picture! And Marlene Dietrich?!?!?! Hollywood...eat your heart out.
ReplyDeleteShe was true style and class.
A glamorous Mood Board. I need that today!
ReplyDeleteI didn't do all that much as the holidays. Even took and extra day off from work. I could of went back to work today.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on and stay safe
Like Garbo, Lamarr and Bergman, the camera loved her face! I just watched "Witness For The Prosecution" the other night and Dietrich stole the film! Your collection of beaded baubles would look nice hanging a window...
ReplyDeleteShe simply takes my breath away in any film she is in.
DeleteAnd what a great idea for the ornaments! A nice winter decoration.
Wait till the boy sees this, he loves Marlene Dietrich.
ReplyDeleteDid you and the Lad make snow dick todays?
My...she just reeked of class and style. And I love the beaded ornaments. I used to see them all the time when I was young...but goodness knows what ever came of them.
ReplyDeleteI love the ornaments and appreciate the work that went into the home made ones. What treasure!
ReplyDeleteMarlene was so beautiful. Classy and sassy.
It's pouring with rain here and has to for most of the week. The temp has to get to 17 degrees! That's about 12 above the seasonal average. Crazy.
Our week looks warm and rainy for the reminder. Certainly not January weather.
DeleteThose beautiful ornaments are a very classy addition to your Christmas collection- I just wonder how big the Palazzo Borghese is to have room to store all your seasonal decorations.
ReplyDeleteWell i have two wall in closets. The one in the hallway houses most of the decorations. Believe it or not most of it fits in two deep Rubbermaid containers three hat boxes and one plain box.
DeleteMy 'atboxes contain 'ats!
DeleteLove the beaded ornaments!
ReplyDeleteYikes snow! We have only seen rain here. And temps are anywhere between 45-60 the whole week. I'm enjoying no snow. Driving in it makes me nervous.
Same here for the week. It's already warming up. Suppose to be in the 50s the rest of the week.
DeleteThe nearby mountains had snow, but it's still too warm for the areas west of them to have any. We're getting rain all week, so I might have to take some pictures if I see them.
ReplyDeletePENGUIN!
ReplyDeleteI put that in just for you.
DeleteMarlene was such a neat woman. With all those ornaments, you'll need a bigger tree.
ReplyDeleteWe have tons of rain it seems coming this week.
ReplyDeleteThe last pic was so nice. I live in warm weather so I enjoy snow pics...feels like the holidays!
ReplyDeleteIt nice to wrap up in each other to keep warm too!!!
DeleteMarlene was the first Female I saw who made Androgyny look so Interesting that I replicated it in my Teens. I was that Girl that sometimes dressed and acted like a Boy, my Brother and Dad hated that I stole clothes from their Closets! *LOL* Of coarse, having an Androgyny bent got me many Male Friends who were the Guys all my Female Friends wanted Dates with, so I also often played Matchmaker. Alas, when you cross the Friend threshold it does make Dating difficult for yourself as you've become One Of The Guys... but all those Men remained Lifelong Friends of mine so it all worked out swell and I snagged The Man, so it's all Good, Right? He liked that I was a kick Ass Woman and made even more Bank than he did in my Corporate Lives, he wasn't the least bit intimidated like so many Men can be about a Woman being Successful. We became like an A-Team by combining forces... him being the Trained Military Assassin and me being a Seasoned Corporate Shark. *Winks*
ReplyDeleteThis post - Ms Dietrich and the Siamese cat - reminds me of dear LẌ.
ReplyDeleteLovely baubles!
The cat FOR SURE, did indeed remind me of our beloved LX.
