LATE NIGHT- VANESSA WILLIAMS
One of my favorite Christmas songs, and one not heard much anymore. Always puts me to a calm and melancholic mood. So pretty and couldn't be sung any more beautifully by another favorite of mine, Vanessa Williams.
Vanessa is glorious. She's really a stunning woman and a vocal genius. It's not the style I might have expected to suit the carol, but it does - oddly and beautifully. I dare say she brought tears to my eyes.
I too think it's one of the more pretty older carols and seldom heard. Ms Williams sings it beautifully. This was an Appalachian poem, sung by a poor young girl dressed in rags, the man who heard it couldn't forget it, it moved him, so he wrote lyrics and music was added. I read about it years ago, it is a beautiful song, many southern churches have it in their hymnal.
Love Ms. Williams, a true diva. And the song... yes. I love melancholy Xmas tales. That's why that trio that did Charlie's Brown Xmas is one of my favorite albums... it is so bittersweet. Kizzes. Vince Guaraldi.

ReplyDeleteSo sweet her voice. A perfect blend of mellowness and passion.
ReplyDeleteLike a shot of Bailey's at Christmas!

Her voice always pleases, that's for sure. Her interpretation on this is sheer perfection.
ReplyDeleteShe's always had a great singing voice. It's a shame we don't hear it often anymore.
ReplyDeleteLove her.
ReplyDeleteShe's fantastic in Queen of the Universe.
XOXO

ReplyDeleteI can never get through this version without some tears of happy, beauty, and memories...especially this year.
