TAKE ME HOME

I'm finally back!
A nice break is always good, and unplugging from news and the internet is even more mind clearing. I have my phone to use, but I am not in the habit of using it much to blog or read blogs on. Upon getting to my mothers, the area had to two or three small snow events. The one day, I loved these icicles hanging. And it gave me an idea.

Happy Hour that evening.....

What a great cock-a-tail stirrer. I highly recommend an icicle for murder too. The evidence melts away. Not that I would know darlings.

But as you can see from  opening picture above, the snow is now all melted and was in the high 60's when I left to come back home to the Casa du Borghese today. Felt nice to shed some layers. The visit was a good one. Got much done around the house for the Mother, got her new gardening guys lined up for outdoor work this year, and started to redo two bedrooms for her. It's been two straight weeks of stripping wallpaper. But the walls are now prepped for painting once I head back in a few weeks. Her and my aunt started taking care of their sisters estate, but now will be down to my mother, as my dear ole aunt took a fall, and has been in the hospital since. Luckily no fractures, but she will need to go off to a rehab for another week. The Mistress spent time, when not stripping wallpaper,  cooking various meals for my uncle while my aunt is " convalescing ". Did some light housework for him while there also.

I spent three days with my good friends, the Capital Street Duo..nice to see some much loved faces and I met their new pup Flyer. Such a cutie. My friend the Dame tried to recruit me yet again to help run his new florist shop, which evidently is doing quite well!!! I know I sure don't want to moved back to Harrisburg. He even has said name your hours and price!!! I am just now slowly looking for work again, but may be waylaid as I may have a huge freelance interior design project coming up for a pass client. We will be touching base shortly. All I know is it would be a full gut for a kitchen and a bathroom. We shall see.

Meanwhile, my mother's dog Lilith was like my shadow while there. She thinks she's a lap dog! But she has been enjoying the outdoors. And she sits so regal.

While there I also started to do some research on this desk that was my fathers grandmothers, then his mother's. It will come to me one day. From my interior design background and studies in college, I am thinking it is of Thomas Sheraton or from inspiration of his work, as many original pieces he himself made are extremely rare. But many of the desk's attributes and features lead me to believe it's of Sheraton design, like it's boxiness, straight legs, the glass fabric windows, the hardware, the use of various woods, the chair design, the dovetail joints, and  all the inlay and motifs. He was famous for writing surfaces that slid out, and for his little hidden compartments inside the desk.

The surface slides out. The key locks both the drawer and the doors.

The beautiful inlay on the chair.

I can remember my dad letting me play post office at the desk when I was little. All the little cubby holes inside fascinated me for some reason.
I searched all over for any dates or signatures, or a little plaque for the furniture makes to no avail. But when searching, I did find two new paper clippings from 1956, and this old electric bill addressed to my grandmother, when my grandparents still lived in Brooklyn. I wonder how common it was then for a bill to come in the name of the lady of this house and not the husband??
I loved that Reddy Kilowatt...and the bill itself was from April and May of 1937!!!!! It was in the desk that long. I don't know why I found that cool? We plan to get a antiques expert in to look over the desk and see what we have.

I'm just glad to be home for a time now. I also had two pleasant surprises waiting for me when I got back to the Casa, in addition to playing naked twister with the houseboys. My neighbor took in two boxes for me while away. Not one, but two mugs!!! The first one I opened was from my ever faithful Duchess Deedles...and she said," When I saw this I thought of you" Boy did she ever get it right!!!!! And rumors are true, I was bore with glitter in my veins. Thank you so much Deedles for the thoughtful gift and gave me a good chuckle.

And the other was from a, old, old, old, and I do mean old, diva friend, Bunny!!!!
She's must be testing new merch, but why she made a small mug was shocking to me. Bitch drinks her beverages from a trough!!! But it was a fun surprise, thought I must admit I'd never thought I'd be drinking my coffee out of Bunny. I hope it's not nutty? Thanks Bun -Bun. Love you, love your hair.

Did I mention I'm glad to be home and with my houseboys?

  1. What an opening shot! You sure know how to make a comeback!

Sounds like you were kept nice and busy while you were away - and with a job offer, too. I bet you feel quite rejuvenated now? I can see why you were so fascinated with the desk when you were younger - so many nooks and crannies to poke around in. And it's still giving up its secrets now with that old electricity bill!

    Welcome back!

P.S. The icicle cocktail is fabulous!

Glad you're back! That desk is fantastic. Love the chair too! That's fascinating that you could literally piece together where it could have come from just looking at some features. Love that!

And that mug cracked me up!

    Missed you.

    1. Yes my design classes from college come in handy. Sheraton and Duncan Phyfe are two of my favorite furniture makers. The electric bill was from my grandmother and is dated 1937, and it was her mothers...so I have no idea how old it is or where to go from there. Might be intresting.... Deeldes and Bunny both crack me up.

  11. And Cher has still got it! SO happy you've taken yourself home. You have been sorely missed. Hope your mother and your aunt are doing well. What a lot to be hit with! You're an exceptional son and nephew. I love the desk. Leave it to Deedles to always come up with something tasteful and appropriate. I wouldn't mind shitting rainbows, but pissing glitter sounds painful. I know that street your grandparents lived on in Sheepshead Bay. I had a friend who rented a basement apartment on the same exact street in the '70s! Of course, it's all new (probably 50s and 60s construction) but I still love those kinds of connections. Anyway, good to have you back!

    1. I goggled that address and the neighborhood is still very pretty. they moved to Sheepshead after downsizing from when they lived in Manhattan. After this place, they moved with my father to Carlisle PA, so he and his father could run his uncles (his mother's brother) branch of his Wall Street firm he owned. When my fathers mothers side settled in the county they were always in Rockland County, before they mostly ended up in Manhattan.

  15. Welcome back!!!!! That desk is fabulous!!! Having taken some furniture classes, it sure does look like Sheraton. And if it would be an original you'd have a fortune on your hands. Most likely a reproduction of Sheraton...and you'd still fetch some very nice change.

But you say you were stripping for two weeks like that is out of the question? You could make money there too. See...you got many talents.

That desk is a treasure. If your grandmother had it in 1937, make you wonder how long her parents had it and just how old it is? I'd be curious too to hear more.

  22. I love the desk and I do hope that it turns out to be the real McCoy. But even if it doesn't it has the family history behind it. My desk was my Dad's but my Mum bought it for him - it's Victorian and cost £40 52 years ago. Like you I love old things (have just bought a Victorian bookcase). I have two old books to go in it (along with a load of new ones). One is 170 years old and the other 305 years old.
