One of my favorite weeks of the year. Thanksgiving is a close tie with Halloween as one of my favorite holidays. The autumnal holidays have so much for the sensories to enjoy don't you think? Yet again, for the third time, I will be cooking the Thanksgiving dinner for us, my uncle, and his visiting son and family, and two of my close friends, 10 in total. I hadn't mentioned it, but it will be an odd thing not only to not see my favorite aunt, our first Thanksgiving without her, but their youngest son, my cousin who unexpectedly passed away at the beginning of October. He was a brilliant violist with several symphonies over the years and had a wicked sense of humor. We will have two empty places at the table this year. And I'd be remiss if I also didn't remember dear Todd Gunther and Anne Marie. I'm thankful to have had such special family and friends grace my life. The weather has turned chilly, and I took a nice sit in the garden this weekend, with thoughts of all four of them this weekend, in addition to shopping for the provisions for the dinner. The bird will be picked up at the farm on Tuesday. All the smells will kindle memories, there will be the sound of the Thanksgiving parades, and all the familiar smells will fill the house. But it will still feel slightly different. But we must be thankful for what we do have. Shit, I'm melancholy today huh?

I love the green velvet sofa. It reminds me of Garbo's Apt.
ReplyDeleteIm a sucker for velvet...hence winning the Freakin Green Elf Shorts.
DeleteSo nice that you’re bringing everyone together. It will be bittersweet but that ends with sweet.
ReplyDeleteI love the house at the top and the house at the bottom.
ReplyDeleteI love the library and that gorgeous sofa. Cold, wet and miserable here. Roll on spring!
ReplyDeleteI love that whole room Christina!!!!
DeleteIt's only natural as we get older to think of the friends and relatives who aren't joining us for holidays anymore. Holidays become bittersweet as we age, I think.
ReplyDeleteI think you may be right.
DeleteMemories of my old Boris
ReplyDeleteI miss that old Turkey
Your memories of Boris often make me smile Squire.
DeleteWhat gorgeous autumn colours! Australia doesn't have a similar holiday so some of us have to go over the Big Water for our jollies. Thank you and I hope you all make more happy memories
ReplyDeleteHow nice to come so far for some jollies Dinah!!!! I lucked out and have a swell family.
DeleteNice pics. It'll be quiet here. The dogs and I prefer that.
ReplyDeleteAs always, your mood board is spot on. Autumn is the most melancholic season, especially after all the leaves have fallen. Winter has always my favourite time of year because everything is blanketed by snow -- sparkling white and clean -- just waiting for a new year to begin again.... Happy Thanksgiving, Mistress Maddie!
ReplyDeleteSummer and autumn are my two most favorite seasons because of the color explosion...but I'd be remiss if I didn't say I adore winter very much for the reasons you stated. I love that all white, and calm, especially at night when it is very clear, a starry sky, and the air so clean and crisp. It gives us all a time to calm down our ass and recharge and enjoy the long evenings.
DeleteOh, all of these put me in the Fall mood of red wine, fires roaring, books to reading, fluffy animals to cuddle--husband, too--and pretty colors.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nostalgic time of year but also a very satisfying time. You are blessed to have a wonderful family - - and I have no doubt your Thanksgiving meal will be fantastic. All of the photos are gorgeous. Ironically, I have an exact set of the glasses in the fifth photo, along with a matching pitcher.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so jealous! I love all colored glassware. I have quite the collection of colored glass vases, but I'd love to have some drinkware like this you have. The hues of it are so cool. And to have the pitcher too?!?!
DeleteLove this mood board.
ReplyDeleteI think Thanksgiving dinner is a chance to share hilarious memories of the family. You guys should remember your aunt's sense of humor and your cousin's talent. They always stay with us. It's what happens with Anne Marie. I was just remembering that she loved 80's Madonna, just like me.
XOXO
My cousin would often play for us a selection from Beethoven after dinner. That will be missed.
DeleteI will be going to my youngest son, in-laws unless the roads are horrible.
ReplyDeleteStay Safe and Coffee is on
I have missed your coffee Dora...I shall pop over soon...warm up the cuppa!
DeleteHolidays just aren't the same when friends and family have passed on. We're not having a dinner this year. There's only three of us that can attend, and that's not enough people to cook for.
ReplyDeleteIf Julia Child heard you, she'd say, "My Dear...one person is worth cooking good food for!"
DeleteI could see myself and Sid on that green sofa! Have a wonderful holiday feast!

ReplyDeletePart of Thanksgiving is giving thanks for those no longer here. They have touched our lives in innumerable ways and shaped who we are. May your Thanksgiving be filled with joy at the memories.
Such a lovely post, Mads. I'm glad you mentioned Anne Marie. I'm sorry for the empty places at your dinner table. I'm sure you will prepare an excellent meal. I've been feeling rather melancholy myself.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Yes Janie I think it's getting to be that time of year.
DeleteThat green sofa, those books! A room to die for.
ReplyDeleteI'd spend hours in that room and probably never leave.
Deletelove autumn for its colours!
