GIN GIN

Today will indeed be a happy day at the Casa du Borghese!!!! Today is my day. Today is National Gin & Tonic Day!!! And at least we now have an excuse for happy hour ASAP. Hail Hail...the whole gang is here!!!!
The cocktail has a medical discovery back in the 1700s to thank for its origin — quinine, which is a bitter, crystalline compound found in tonic water — works as a kinda-sorta effective anti-malarial. When that reveal was made to British soldiers, who were staking down flags in every corner of the world (particularly in a few literally hot malaria spots), worked out that the bitter taste of quinine was overcome with a slug of gin, and the G&T came to be. Today’s tonic water contains far less quinine, and a bit more sugar, but it still is the ideal companion to the liquor derived from juniper berries and enjoyed since the Middle Ages. So whether you chose to make love to your tonic and gin like yours truly today.... sip one will  drown the sorrows of the day with a few fancy takes on the classic cocktail at home. While I have many gins, Hendricks is by far my favorite flavor, infused with it's special ingredients of rose and cucumber.
In this quarantine....who needs curbside service, when one can have sofa side service?

  1. I couldn't survive without a large gin and tonic. It's my medication.
I love Hendricks. My number one though is Whitley Neill Parma violet gin with evergreen Mediterranean tonic. Sublime! Do try, mistress.
    Cheers! Xx

    1. That does sound good Christina. I tend to like the odd exotic flavor of things in cocktails, so this violet gin sound right up my alley. I don't know Ive seen this label here...might have to research it. I toast to you today my friend!

  3. I don't normally drink gin BUT ... a Hendricks martini straight up with a wee splash of Cointreau and a twist is dee-vine.
I may partake a little gin today as I love celebrating holidays.

  6. It's probably a good thing that I can't drink anymore, because all we seem to have in the house are a variety of *shudder* whiskeys and a six pack of canned wine *double shudder* that was gifted to us. I like gin, but it always made me feel wonky the next day. I guess I'm just rum based and solar powered.

Nothing wrong with rum either darling. I have one I really like, a dark rum called the Kraken. You just try it sometime. Oh . My. God.

  8. ...loved the post, illustrations and story - we apparently owe a lot to the British soldiers...as IPA (India Pale Ale) - my favorite beer- was the result of how to get pale ale to India without spoiling! G&T is my favorite mixed drink, but since it’s not handy, I will raise my glass to you with a fine red wine!

  9. I've been drinking gin and tonics EVERY SINGLE DAY for a month now! Great minds think alike!

Actually, before we went into lockdown I went to the liquor store to stock up. I MEANT to buy one large bottle of gin and one large bottle of vodka (as well as some whiskey) and I accidentally bought two large bottles of different kinds of gin! So now gin and tonic is my go-to drink until this is all over. Good thing I love them!

  13. You better believe I'll be having a gin and tonic tonight! I just got Bluecoat Gin upon your advice. Very good. It's harder to get here...I still don't think they are very wide spread yet. So it's mostly Hendricks and Bombay. I don't like Tanqueray thought...something about the taste. Cheers Mistress!

    1. Oh yes..I love Blue Coat too...its just not in the picture...it's in the second row. It's my favorite second gin. Blue Coat and Hendricks are distinctly different. While both have a base of juniper berries, Blue Coat prouds it self on lemon peel, angelica root and coriander seeds, where Hendricks is cucumber and rose based. And I love me cucumber, which is why I favor them a tad more. Both are suburb. And Blue Coat is a Philly company, so I always patronize then also.

  24. Crud. We've got a 12-pack of tonic in the house, but no gin. I'm doomed.

  25. So since the turd in chief is pushing one anti-malaria drug to fight the coronavirus (sad that the iPhone offers that as a suggestion) it’s totally appropriate to advocate for your tonic. I’m more apt to take your advice than his.
