WAR ON DRAG

While I was away on vacation...the war on drag got intense. While I don't do drag on a regular basis anymore, it's still part of me and my love of the art and know way to many friends and sisters who are drag queens...so yes, one takes it personally. But these threats against the drag community is nothing new, however they are taking a different approach to safety and security this time. Drag is the reason I have a "I'll slap the shit out of you first and ask question later" attitude and backbone. Drag gave me the energy to fight and defended myself, while doing it with style henny. It served a big purpose for me for some time. And I'm grateful for having the 20 or so years I did drag. Drag is an art form, and entertainment, an artistic expression, a gender expression, a question and a challenge. It is almost always tailored to the audience it is for. There are drag shows for adults and kids, just like any other art.

Amidst the banning of gender-affirming healthcare, US states are now trying to ban drag as a whole. This staple part, and a huge one of the LGBTQ culture is under attack. Tennessee became the first state to ban drag performers and kings from preforming in public. Then in January of 2023 Arizona kicked off the year with three separate bills criminalizing aspects of drag performers. The Senate Bill 1026 would ban places, like libraries from receiving state funds for drag shows, "targeting minors". The other two further limit drag shows. And where they can be held. Moreover, the state will classify all venues where drag performers, perform, as "adult oriented businesses". This means that drag venues cannot be located near anywhere close by children and is even trying to ban drag story hours in general. Whether these bills become laws or not, the damage has been done. Conservative assholes are using irrational and uneducated fears to persuade the population into false narrative. Tennessee officially became the first US state to ban drag shows. One of their new laws could also impact future Pride events. Unsurprisingly in March of 2023 the RePukeian Governor signed the anti-drag bill into law, meaning that drag artist officially cannot perform in any public setting that could be accessed by a minor. Under the new law, the state will treat a first offense as a misdemeanor, but a second offense would count as a felony. While the language used in the bill is very broad, it refers to drag as "adult cabaret" and drag performers as "male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to prurient interest". The language can potentially lead to gender non-conforming people being banned from publicly expressing themselves.

And if you think it's getting better, think again. Since the beginning of this year at least 32 bills, so far, have been filed in Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota, North and South Carolina, Nebraska, Texas, of course, and West Virgina...with more on the way. And look at the list of attacks against drag in 2022 alone.

And since we gays took to our "dating apps" and internet... and we gave up on "stepping out" it has killed gay bars and clubs...or, many gay establishments are now introducing "straight nights". It's happened right here in Harrisburg with it's well-known dance club. That only pushes out drag shows and performers. Further limiting where queens can be seen.

Drag as an art form is vital to our gay society, and so are drag performers. It is an exploration of gender identity. It allows us to express who we are and play with gender roles. Drag can become an extension of who you are, like in my case. It is a powerful tool in understanding yourself. Drag is not as cis and binary as a "man in a wig, dressed as a woman." Drag is for all genders to enjoy and to perform in. However, many conservative politicians are framing it as a threat to children and society. This is a false narrative. It only serves to further their anti-LGBTQ, more specifically anti-trans rhetoric. Meanwhile most of these fools have never seen a drag show of any kind. They speak from ignorance and lack of education. So keep to the corner and shut your pieholes.

Drag can be a life-saving thing. Many trans and gender diverse people do drag first in order to express and explore their gender identity. If we started to see queer and trans people as human beings, even for just one moment, we would see all the potential art, beauty and joy that could come out of it. Drag , after all, as only existed since the 19th century. It's nothing new to dress up in what are traditionally seen as clothes of the opposite gender for god's sake. However, conservatives have dragged drag into politics as part of their anti-LGBTQ agenda. Why do these asses view drag as a threat? Because of fear, ignorance and a distraction to real issues. If we are allowed to explore our genders, power structures like the gender binary slowly start to crumble. Drag is a beacon of hope that one day will erase the gender binary as a whole. We have to remember that Jaida Essence Hall got it right..."Look over there." And most willingly oblige. Luckily for us, we queens don't give up and aren't going anywhere. Even a global pandemic couldn't keep drag down...we just took it online and found new ways to bring drag to everyone.

Our Gay Patron Saint, Madonna, has added two shows in Tennessee and proceeds to go to the Drag Defense Fund, where you can also go to donate. But honey, to quote the great Madonna, one thing these conservative fools forget?

"Anyone with a half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen."

All I can say, if these are the best politicians we can get and are supposed to be "America's sweethearts"... then America needs a heart transplant. At his point they should just make like their hairlines hunties...and recede!

  1. I have known a few drag queens, and how anyone doesn't like a drag queen is beyond me. It's heartbreaking to see them attacked like this. And I agree with Madonna...you'd be a fool to fuck with a drag queen....talk about stirring a hornets nest!!!!!

    1. I think that's a part of the problem people are so sheltered. Once somebody knows someone and has personal experience in history, it really changes their eyes and opens them. When it's someone you know personally then it's a whole new ball game.

  2. HERE HERE!!!! Excellent post and yes hell to your closing line!!!!

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I don't get why some people think they have the right to take any of that from others?

    1. I would swear any culture and art seem to be up to grabs to eradicate. This attack on drag queens, and big uproar about that teacher in Florida showing a picture of the Statue of David is the biggest crocks of shit I have seen. All the issues we have facing our country and this is what we're worried about??

  3. Yes girl!!!! Thank you Mistress for posting this and getting word out. Your blog alone is a huge archive of drag since its inception. So that's a huge fuck you right there. Thanks for getting word out and helping the community that's its time for us to take a stand again. Some days you fill my old heart with hope and love for the future.

    Tundra Bunny here...

Great post, Maddie! If any group deserves to be banned for targeting/grooming minors, it's the NRA. In the face of so many school shootings for so many years, how can Americans continue to NOT implement gun control laws? IMHO, the Second Amendment should have been abolished decades ago: the King of England hasn't been a threat since 1780.

    1. Agreed! We have Priest doing more damaging things to children... and two political parties with their heads in the sand over gun control. Two stubborn parties who will not work together and are mostly just all corporate politicians at this point... so all they know is the dollar sign.

Has anyone told this to Congress yet???

Just live and let live and mind your own business.
    I despair, I really do.

At the rate these politicians and countries are going we're going to be living in an all gray black and white world with no color or Exotica of any kind. I like the history, drags been around for ages and hasn't gone anywhere yet. Power to the Queens is right.

  9. One has to wonder whether it is intentional that this War on Drag is actually a War on Shakespeare. Prurient? Gender non-conformity? Check, and check. "Targeted at minors" is more debatable, but there is no question that socialist teachers are trying to indoctrinate children into this smut in high schools.

    1. As usual I like your unexpected angle that you've brought in about the Shakespeare! I still will never understand why people are so threatened by drag. In my mind it's like every other thing if you don't like guns don't buy it gun. And if you don't like drag shows then don't go to drag shows. But what these people don't understand is drag shows are tailored to their audience. The idea of people thinking kids will get unnerved by a man dressed in wigs and dresses is nuts. From what I understand most kids love it as drag queens give animation to the story not to mention wear brightly colored dresses and wigs. I don't think the kid is concerned whether there is a woman or a man inside the queen only if they have been entertained while hearing a story.

  10. Excellent post. Let's not worry about childcare or the needy or healthcare or prenatal care or the elderly or equality or fair pair pay. Those are too difficult. So, let's attack trans people and drag queens.

    1. Well that's just it Mitchell. While they may believe some of this, they are grasping at straws. All they are mostly doing is deflecting from major issues that should be addressed. That way they don't have to work on the issues, and whether a bill passes or not, if it does it'll just be a cherry on their cake oh look what we did.

    1. I wish I had clear answers for you but unfortunately it seems ever since the last Administration and the pandemic this country is completely nuts and gone off the rails. One party just plain evil and doesn't do any good while the other one tries to do good but is way too passive on other issues. The way I see it this is not going to end good. Thank you for your comment from Toronto!

It's not just Drag these white politicians are against. They're coming for the entire LGBTQ community. Among other things, say...women's rights, for one thing, contraception, BIPOC.

Speaking of someone who started in Drag and then went trans I feel more supported by my LG BT more than ever. And Madonna certainly has it right.. you can't be of the right mind if you're going to fuck with a drag queen!

  19. Mistress, this is an amazing post, speaks the truth and I agree with Madeline, a bit upsetting. Over the weekend we had a discussion with my group of friends, and which I had to ream more than a few of them out for not supporting the drag Community better. When you get to A list gays, jocks and other parts of gay men in the community they don't get drag or think that only fem or sissy men do it. It's times like this that if we as an lgbtq can I support each other and act as one community then we go down as one. For me personally obviously besides the sex drag queens are the best thing about the gay community. As far as I'm concerned drag queens do far more for the community than most of the gay men. We can only hope that this turns around, and that other states change their mind.

    1. I agree with your comment that really pisses me off. Just because they have an entitled upbringing and didn't live through Stonewall, doesn't mean they should take the rights so lightly. If they get their rights taken away they'll be the first ones complaining.

    2. You're right about that asriel. Usually in time of crisis the jocks and pretty boys are the first ones to scram, well it's the trans, drags, lesbians and all the other minorities in the LGBT that will stay and fight. It can't be posies and rainbows all the time.

  20. Oh you don't need to tell me that you'll slap the shit out of somebody and ask questions later!!! What I don't understand is why we're banning parents for making their own decision if they want to take their kid to a drag Story Hour or a gay pride festival? Like drag there's all kinds of different content on TV, yet I don't see the conservatives banning TV shows and movies?

  21. I've been crossing since I was 13 years old. I sit here now typing this fully crossed up. (Forgive my tired old Oregon slang - if you were AM it was drag, if AF, it was 'crossing up'.) It's who I am. It's how I live in my body correctly and how I am the way I need to be in the world. Prurient? BULLSHIT. By the time shitty legislation like this reaches a statehouse the trend has already been underway for awhile, like a tsunami building. They're out there in Kentucky and other benighted places not just attacking drag queens and nonconforming males, they're hunting them, beating them and killing them. They're not just targeting drag -the kings are also bearing the brunt. They're 'raping the woman' back into bois and dykes like it's 1943. This affects all of us. And I Will Not Stand For It. -damn Maddie, you always get me ranting.

Conservatives want the Queers in the closet, the Little Women pregnant and barefoot and the Colored in their place. First Amendment be damned.
Drag has been a lifesaver for many a Queer kid and they cannot take it. Fuck them all.
