MORNING RITURAL

Yes, morning! This shot was taken before sunrise before the thermal baths one morning. The above shot is the Gerbeaud Cafe. Warbucks is a early riser. Come to think of it, he's also a night owl. I bet he get four hours a sleep at night. So come morning he loves his coffee among other things!!! Most days he had already two coffees before I even cracked my eyelids. I had no idea that Budapest has quickly become the global burgeoning hot spot for great coffee and coffee shops. When Warbucks moved there, specialty and third wave coffee shops exploded he said in popularity but didn't displace the Hungarian capitals historic old coffee houses and grand cafes and dessert houses. Some of these places...I'd never seen anything like them...gold accented mirrors, crystal chandeliers, marble topped tables and curved wooden chairs...all offered a flavor of the old-world charm. Once a hub for Hungarian writers, artist and revolutionaries, these cafes have an impressive history to themselves. And I'll be honest, cards on the table....I had some of the best tasting coffee I've ever had outside of Costa Rica, who still has the best coffee.

Gerbeaud Cafe, by far had the most decadent desserts!!! This place got its start in 1858.
My cherry Bon-Bon infused with cognac. To . Die. For

Meanwhile at the New York Cafe...a Renaissance style coffee house is located in the New York Palace Hotel, built in 1894.The place eventually closed in the 1940's but was acquired by an Italian company, renovated the place and returned it to its former glory.
On this day it was afternoon tea followed by desserts. Warbucks thought he would be funny and have Happy Birthday written on my plate. But this plate got brought to our table by accident. It actually says Happy Anniversary. But then the joke ended up on us both as it occurred to us that we met at the Raven Resort, almost 8 years to the date that morning. How weird is that?

The Parisi Passage Cafe was established in the early 1900's of the Parisi Udvar Hotel. Durning the day it has the feeling of a teeming cafe and excellent breakfast place and come evening it offers a special but laid-back vibe with excellent dining, all characterized with soaring domed ceilings and luxurious design.
Isn't this a lovely breakfast? We stopped in for coffee in the afternoon but ended up ordering several desserts. Who the hell needs to fit in square cuts this summer? You'll notice I also have two waters. Sweets make me more thirsty.
Truth be told, some days we didn't go out in the morning. Several days we had no plans at all. I fell in love with Warbuck's flat. He is very much a minimalist...but his style against the aged building...I loved the contrast. And his rent made me sick. It would go for well over $2,000 a month here! He even had pockets doors to the bedroom.

See...he does have a coffee maker! Even though he had coffee brough in.
And yes...I think my ass is even bigger. I am also sure the airplane flew considerably lower the flight back. Though the guy at the security checkpoint seemed to be a bit fascinated with my cakes.

  3. Thank you so much for these posts. They bring back fine memories of the two trips for holidays I had in Central Europe back in my early 30s. Each time, me and the former boyfriend visited the Czech Republic an Hungary and were delighted as well. We met so many nice and welcoming people. Have you noticed that when speaking Hungarians most often finish their sentences by lowering the inflection of their tone - quite the opposite of Aussies. It made the boyfriend - whose father was Hungarian - say that you can barely notice when two Hungarians have an argument :-)
Again, thanks a million. I can see that a lot more renovation has been going on and for the best of preservation of these beautiful cities and their art de vivre.
    Hug you. Laurent

    1. I was pleasantly surprised Laurent by just how much I enjoyed the city and the experience. Last time when we went to Vienna, Warbucks wanted to show me Budapest since it was so close, but now Im glad he didn't, time wouldn't have allowed it justice. I still liked Vienna more, but this was a very tight close second. But then the ride to Vienna on the Orient Express may have had something to do with that!! LOL

    2. Err, Vienna... we only stopped there for a 24 hours stopover on our way back to France. The former boyfriend had picked a flyer in a Budapest bar for a (he said back then) gay-friendly bar. So we took a cab and ended up in a remote neighborhood, a sole lamp post light poorly lighting the street near a door topped with a red bulb. Only once inside did I find that "leder bar" meant Leather Bar, which the Hungarian boyfriend was silently aware of, obviously. Just imagine the barely 30 me that I was, deliciously golden tanned in August, wearing a Lacoste polo shirt along with bermudas and Converse in a darkish bar filled with bikers alike men, oops. When the time came to venture to the loo after a couple of pints, I got cornered by two sweaty Tom-of-Finland German speaking and very engaging guys. Today I'd most probably react otherwise, but that night I had noticed the sling nearby which I was not yet ready to explore so I declined in English.
I guess that as a Libra born guy I get to choose whenever I'm ready for whatever experience :-)
Anyway, from the little I saw from Vienna in broad daylight I found it to be too much clean to my tastes. For Heaven sakes: they can fine one for crushing their cigarette butt in the street (I was called to order by an old man wearing a loden), they cover some architectural elements with fishing nets so that pigeons won't land on them, align metal pins on the edges of windows so that birds won't rest there. Austrians seem to be so obsessed with cleanliness that the whole downtown Vienna seemed to me like the entry hall of a retirement home for geranium collectors (in Austria no chalet is worth it if their balconies doesn't literally puke of geraniums, very local tradition it seems).
But of course that's just me gossiping after a few hours only stay in a town that, I'm positively sure, has much more to offer than the little I tasted from it.
      Cheers !

    1. I agree. I think I grew a fondness for Gerbeaud myself and your right about the New York Cafe. It just seemed to keep going, so many rooms and high ceilings....and it was always bustling. Some of the small coffee shops were neat too. I often saw and talked to the same people on days.

  5. The best tasting coffee in the world at least in my opinion! But I have not been to Cosa Rica. When I went to Budapest, I found these places interesting, and noticed the many didn't stop in for coffee and leave, but stayed!! And I am adoring Warbucks places and his minimalism. I so need a good sort out.

  6. Talk about starting the day with a bang! What elegance and drama. For some reason they remind of of the old automats that used to be in NYC and Philly, only much more opulent.. while the Parisi Passage left me in awe, I think my place of choice too would be Gerbeaud Cafe. I mean that Cherry Bon-Bon look so good. It looks quite amazing actually.

What is not to like about Warbucks well-appointed apartment? More Stylish than some homes I've been in. The staircase to so old world. I love building like that. He makes this old lady feel better about downsizing to a smaller place now.

This is insane! The hubby wants to go now in the worst way. I myself would go just for the coffee. Sure don't see places like that here huh?

  8. Talk about nice coffee and dessert breaks in an amazing environment! I enjoyed just seeing the macaroon tower!! And I have heard that Budapest has a reputation for some of the best coffee in the world.

  11. Just the magnificent buildings would make me stay for hours!
Add to that those delicious concoctions and they would have to shoo me away at the end of the day! Delicious. And I love his flat! I totally believe that he pays there a fraction of what one would pay here for a place like that.

    XOXO

  12. The pastries look absolutely decadent! The architecture is fascinating. Nothing like the old countries to keep history alive in the buildings. We here in the US do way too much imploding, don't you think?

    1. I have long said we implode things way more than we should. And our other issue is we don't repurpose buildings, we either tear down gorgeous ornate buildings, or let too many buildings sit vacant while we tear up more land to build more buildings and for what? So they can eventually sit vacant? When you have lifestyle shopping centers sitting either empty or three or four stores in them and they're yet building another one we have issues with developing in this country. I swear it's almost like in the US we're afraid of any kind of open space or green space.

    2. You can thank real-estate speculators for all that mess and issues of affordability, they are literally driving our economy into the abyss. Sadly, more countries are following that bad USA example.

  19. Glad to see you are enjoying eclectic Budapest, like Prague and St Petersburg, one of the jewels of Eastern Europe. The New York Cafe is the best, went there before and after the iron curtain, some of the older people spoke English and could tell some wild stories about their lives during fascist, communist rule and WW2. You should check out the Ruszwurm Cafe in Buda/Castle District, it is legendary as well. - Rj
