IN THREE WORDS

In this feature, I'll share a weekly guest with you all, and you tell me in only three words what comes to mind.

In Three Words...
Bramwell Tovey

Bramwell Tovey was wildly popular in Philadelphia and with the Philadelphia Orchestra, his talents and humor, so it was sad when we heard when he passed on last July. His humor...

  2. "Many good memories!"
As I commented on a previous post a year or two ago, Bramwell Tovey was a beloved conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony in the 80s and 90s when I lived there. I went to many of their concerts over those years. In fact, just a few days ago, I was listening to a CD of a WSO Gilbert and Sullivan gala concert he conducted in the 90s. He donned quick drag to join with the guest soprano and contralto to sing "Three Little Maids From School" from the Mikado. It was a magical evening! His passing was mourned across Canada, let me tell you.

    1. He was such a rare gem in the composer world. When I had first heard I do remember getting a little teary eyed. He and the Philadelphia Orchestra composer,Yannick Nézet-Séguin had a wonderful relationship.

  9. Amazing welcoming human.

Tovey was truly a master of his craft. Seeing him and playing with him with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducting us, and preform is like nothing else. This past season of Glorious Sound of Christmas, and though wonderful as always, it wasn’t the same without him.

    Versatile, ubiquitous, and tireless.

The British conductor, who transformed a well-regarded career in front of theater orchestras to symphonic leadership.

  12. Versatile, charismatic, renowned.

He made many non- fans feel comfortable with classic music with his welcome spirit and humor. I know not a lot about classical music, but know what I like when I hear it. His conducting and composing was always so fun and energetic.

  13. Good Old 1812. What we need is someone to improve on Napoleon and Adolf's invasions and take down those bastards in the Kremlin (scuse my French). My friend Sheena might know this guy; she's sung with just about every conductor around from Mutti to Rattle to Levine.
