AUTUNMAL GARDEN

It's been a glorious weekend. I spent the day with friends in Chestnut Hill for the day yesterday, which is just outside of Philly, and today was spent doing a first clean-up of a few leaves falling. Some of the annuals were yanked out and a small pruning of the roses, which still continue to bloom. I suspect when the first frost comes, that will seal the fate of most of the annuals and perennials. But the zinnias are still exploding....and you can see I might have gone nuts with pumpkins and gourds. I still have more to place. After the clean-up, a nice sit out back was called for with some nice apple cider.

The first year the cockscomb bloomed.
I know your shocked to know I have cocks in the garden.
As one can see, even Matilda made the move to the new Casa with me.
My yearly Hallows Raven decoration.

And behind the shed at the property line caught this fellow. I have no idea what type of bird, I suspect a sparrow of some kind. I was just overjoyed to get a zoomed in picture so clear.

  2. I'm not one bit surprised that you have cocks in your garden. Only you, sweetie.

  3. I only wish we could grow zinnia here - but (like cosmos, coreopsis, marigolds and so on) unfortunately they need a lot more sun than we can ever give them, and I'm not sure they would be all that happy in pots anyhow.

It's all looking good in your patch, dear! (Even the cockscomb - a name I always associate with crabs, rather than sex). Jx

    1. Thank you dear. Your comment means a lot coming from you. I have done marigolds in pots before, and they did well when in full sun...and they are a natural bug repellant. I actually like the scent of them too. Zinnia on the other hand hated the pots. I almost lost them all till I transplanted them in the ground, and they flourished. It's been trial and error.

    2. We have had to adapt hugely to the fact that we a) have only a miniscule bit of "ground" to actually plant anything into (90% of the garden being paved or concreted), and b) the bastard weed trees in neighbouring gardens have begun to encroach over every bit of sunshine we have left.

Salvias still do well, but Dahlias are showing signs of being a "lost cause". Lilies, roses, Clematis and Hemerocallis still give us a great show, but Ipomoea and Thunbergia vines have suffered. Thank heavens for Fuchsias and ferns, I say! Jx

    5. Ours either. They did so well last year that we got for this year, and I believe they were all burnt up by the heat by July.

  6. All so lovely!!!! I had forgotten all about Matilda. Nice to see her back. I'm old, and for a minute thought it was a raven sitting there. I love the color. I also am a huge fan or ornamental cabbage, and it last right through till January. My yard man will be planting mine this week. The zinnia is gorgeous.

  7. Gorgeous colors. We, too, had beautiful weather today and even ate breakfast outside as the sun was coming up. But, alas, it won't last ... cooler, and colder, temperatures are coming.

    1. Breakfast outside? That sounds like a great thought. It was nice enough here that I've got it done that. Although I often take my coffee out in the morning.

  25. I see you have another 'purple, veiny, love cabbage' on the go this year. And what a monster your cock is! (Judging by the look on that adorable little sparrow's face, I think they're wondering whether it's safe to go into your garden)
