This was one of those weekends where I remember why I like them so much. After a very nice lie in, I enjoyed my morning coffee and full-on breakfast right by my windows. I get asked if while I'm gone do all my bird stay around? Well, as soon as I return home whether a week or two weeks, within an hour or so of seed going on the sill and in the feeder, it's a full-on feeding frenzy. But this weekend was a gleeful moment as I, after all these years finally got Bluebirds! And they even landed on the sill. They generally tend to saty up by the lake, so I was overjoyed to see them. I counted six at one point.

As well as Bouvier looking for his nuts.
And I suspect this group of starlings are up to no good. But they seemed to be just hanging out. Though I was feeling a Tippi Hedren moment for a time.

Lovely bluebirds - they look like Easterns given that white belly. I have never had a bluebird appear at my feeders even when I was putting meal worms out.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Lady M and for chiming in! Here at my apartment and at the ancestral home, I had tried for numerous years to attract them to no avail. And suddenly...they seem to be appearing out of the woodwork. I am delighted.

ReplyDeleteNow you know I loved this post. It's been a while since we have seen the Usual Suspects, and this one did not disappoint. Bluebirds are such sweet birds, if not a bit skittish. I too have tried for years to attract them and have never seen one in my yard yet. I wonder what is attracting then to you all of a sudden??? Are the fox still around?
ReplyDeleteI have been using the same feed all this time, so I'm not sure what finally brought them to the Borghese Bird Cafe. I've haven't seen the vixen, but I'm sure the babes are all grown and on their own. Vixen is probably already bread again and will be awaiting some new kits I suspects.

I agree Christina. I was so happy to finally see them at my windows and consider myself lucky. I know they are very tricky to get it seems in one's yard. Same with Hummingbirds. In all the 23 years I lived here I have seen two. But other friends I know do everything to attract them to no avail. other friends just plant bright flowers...especially red and blue and bingo...got them quick. Flowers is the trick me thinks.
DeleteStarlings are always up to no good! We have flocks of them here - bathing in the pond and getting ready to migrate. Love watching them getting on with their lives.

DeleteYou're so patient! Great pics. And how idyllic. We have a murder of crows that we are feeding. Also starlings, cardinals, blue jays, and assorted sparrows. The cats only get upset when the crows are on the ground - they get all twitchy-butted and make low noises (sort of like me at the prairie during the summer.) Thanks for sharing. Kizzes. P.S. Would love to see your 'full-on breakfast' sometime. I'm sure it's quite the feast.

DeleteOMG!!!! I have never seen a Bluebird!!!! I think when I lived there, I just assumed it was another term for Blue Jays. But they are different birds I see. Sure, are pretty. I always did love the golden finch too.

ReplyDeleteI wish we had such an array of birds. We get some sparrows, but mostly pigeons and grackles. Two weeks ago, a woodpecker in the neighbor's pine tree. My favorite: Each Spring and Fall itty-bitty chickadees. I love listening to them and seeing them hop around the yard and the bushes. Sometimes they're so small their heads are barely above the grass.

DeleteHow wonderful to see Bluebirds up close! Perhaps they'll be nesting nearby this spring? We still have too much snow on the ground here for spring birds -- I'm longing to see Robins bob-bob-bobbing along again! What kind of nuts do you leave out for Bouvier?
ReplyDeleteI think the Robins here have just returned, surprisingly, since it's still cold here. But the warm days in the 60's might have fooled them last week. I saw my first one of the season last Friday. As for Bouvier, i put out either regular shell peanuts or walnuts. He seems to really like walnuts.
DeleteI'm not surprised that Bouvier prefers walnuts as they are more nutritious than peanuts. For me, cracking walnuts is akin to solving a Rubik's Cube... a lot of effort for very little return... so I hope Bouvier gets unshelled walnuts to feast upon, LOL!
DeleteYes...unshelled walnuts!!! But he does like his shell regular peanuts. I noticed he will bury them for later...buy very seldom will "squirrel" away the walnuts. Too tempting me thinks.
DeleteI love feeding our Wild Birds too, they can be such Characters can't they? That first pix it doesn't even look Real, it looks so perfect like a little Bird Sculpture! Be still my beating Heart, it just melts when I see these precious Creatures trusting our presence.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how close to the windows I can get Dawn and they don't fly away. Some birds are better than others. Woodpecker and doves won't even budge. But if I have guest, the birds flutter away quickly or won't even come neat the windows. How they sense is beyond me. Must be smell, since birds don't hear all that well.
DeleteI had a bluebird lay eggs in my hanging tomato planter one year and they have stayed around ever since. I can hear them in the nearby trees, and I have put up a couple of birdhouses to encourage them to stay. Beautiful to watch. But I can't seem to get golden finch.
