BATS!

Today at the ASPCA  was a thrilling time. Last night someone brought in a baby bat they found on their porch that had been in the same place for two days...no parents sighted. One of the vet's there showed me the bat knowing that I'm all inquisitive. Till today, I was deathly afraid of bats...but I had no idea they were so much more cute, and less scary up close. I don't know I wanted to hold it, but it was cool none the less to see it this close. The team there deemed the little bat Smokey. He was off to the Aark Wildlife Center up the road from me to be raised and released. They asked if I wanted to take him there, since on my way home and I said yes. He was squeaking in the car the whole time in his little box.
Aark Wildlife Center  is also something I could get involved with at some point too.

  1. Awww! How repulsively adorable! I do like bats, but the way the smaller ones (like this one) move around all jerkily reminds me too much of scary "Dynamation" stop-motion horrors from old Ray Harryhausen films.
How fortunate that the bat came in for your visit! Although, the poor bat was unfortunate to have been in such a predicament to warrant being brought in, I suppose.

  5. Weren't you afraid of getting bit and becoming a vampire? His rather cute. And very important for the bug control in nature.

  7. so tiny! glad the bat will have a chance at life. my in-laws house had a bat house attached to one wall; used to watch the bats going in and out.

  8. I absolutely adore bats - I often deliberately sit out on the bench in our garden at dusk specifically to see them emerge from whatever tiny hidey-hole they inhabit and flit up and down the gardens all along our street, eating the nasty midges and mozzies and other horrid things we don't want lurking around. In the height of summer, it's swifts by day and bats by night, all having a hell of a feast... Jx

    1. Me too. I sit the the courtyard at night and love watching them swoop down and up capturing the bugs. Could be why I don't get bit sitting out late...the bats are eating the bugs. I just had no idea how quite normal looking they were.

  11. Mistress, that gave me chills, while at the same time I thought he was cute. They don't bother me as long as they stay up in the air.

  17. amazing! Bats still creep me out but I’ve gotten to the stage that I can visit our local zoo (Bioparc Fuengirola, a great place) and walk directly under the fruit bats in the aviary and stop and admire them. I used to rush by and look from a distance. You’re a kind soul, Mistress Maddie!

  19. Awwww - so cute! I have rescued a baby owl before [it fell out of the nest - not uncommon], but sadly the owl people couldn't save it. I hope your little bat thrives and has a happy Halloween.

  20. Oh my God, it's so cute! It's too bad you can't keep them as pets unless you're Bruce Wayne.
