Keeping it light this week...Mae West, known for her buxom figure, long Gibson-girl gowns and sultry voice, slinked through the 1930's films batting eyelashes, flung wisecracks, and threw around many now legendary quotes. Following the success of her first record see, West released ...yes kids... Wild Christmas in 1966, a rock and roll album for Dagonet Records.
It's both horrifying and hilarious, at moments I wasn't sure I should laugh or cry... but I know I must have had a few alarmed faces! But what a good fun time see. So go ahead...as Mae said herself- "Those who are easily shocked, should be shocked more often."
And can't forget this gem....
She was my kinda gal!
ReplyDeleteHer Santa Baby is everything…
XOXO

Many years ago, I bought a copy of Mae’s “Great Balls of Fire” in a bargain bin. I’ve got to admit, it was pretty horrible! But even terrible, how do you not like Mae West...it's all part of her charm.
ReplyDeleteI adored Mae West...yes I saw her in the movie theater I'm that old!!! Not a recording artist by any stretch...but I will give these a twirl because you know it's going to be campy fun.
ReplyDeleteThis LP is a hoot and a holler, Maddie! Merry Christmas and HO HO HO
ReplyDeleteLOL!!!! How campy and obscure...what a find! Who knew? ADORED Mae.
ReplyDeleteHate or find her music entertaining....here we are almost 100 years later speaking high praise of this star who stole the scene in every movie. Who can claim this success today and tomorrow? I love her and to see her on the screen as a youngster and to see her now as a senior, I only have more respect for her and the trail she blazed as a woman of great strength and brilliance. She was once the smartest business woman, and the wealthiest in the US. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWho knew she had some Christmas songs???? Mae in December...I love it.
ReplyDeleteGreat fun, what would your version of Santa Baby sound like?
ReplyDeletesound like? what make you think you'd hear anything with his mouth full?
DeleteOh Mae, you did it your way, always!
ReplyDeleteNo wonder she inspired generations of drag queens! She had MOXY!
ReplyDeleteDo not let the glitz mislead you, Mae West was known to be a very shrewd business woman who definitely knew how to read the room.
ReplyDeleteI read her biography and she was actually one of the best business women in the country at the time. And as cap called out also one of the richest Everything she did was planned and calculated, and she could not be taking easily.
DeleteShe was one special person. A character all her own, her talent was in delivering a line.
ReplyDeleteGreat fun, but not my kind of music
ReplyDeleteMae was well ahead of her time.
ReplyDeleteL'indomptable
ReplyDeleteMae West, j'adore ses chansons de Noël.
Comme d'autres l'ont dit en avance sur son temps et une femme très intelligente.
Maîtresse, vous êtes vous-même un peu Mae.

Oh.. well say, Handsome Man, how tall are you without your boots on? 6"9"? Well, never mind the 6 feet...let's talk about the 9 inches.
DeleteLordy! She growled her way through Santa Baby like she'd just eaten Eartha Kitt and spat out the bones - hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThat is a truly dreadful home-made LP cover, however... Jx
Yeah the cover art to that album is pretty bad. I'm not to familiar with Dragonet Records...must have been a small label with no budget.
Deleteare we sure she wasn't your birth mother?
ReplyDeleteWild in her time, Mae West was also a very astute observer of the American scene and pushed the envelope in her plays and in her films. (during the Great Depression Mae's films saved Paramount studios from bankruptcy)
ReplyDeleteBy the early 1950's it seemed Mae was a has-been, but she made a comeback with her bevy of musclemen in a Las Vegas revue act. (it was rumored Mae's musclemen provided the protein rich nutrients for her revitalizing face cream)
A one-of-a-kind lady, we'll never see her likes again ): (-:
It's no wonder she's one of my favorite people. I've always enjoyed Mae West and I actually do have one of her records on vinyl . It had been my father's.
DeleteNEVER HAVE I EVER! Wow. She goes where someone like her should not... this is like seeing Sextette for the first time. I don't know.... but I think I have even more respect for her. How utterly mad. Thank you for sharing this. My mind is truly blown... and you know I've been blown a lot!
ReplyDeleteYeah....the only two not blown by each other yet is probably us!!!!! Oh Sextette! That was a ride.
DeleteWell no one can deny that Mae West was never not entertaining. Fun entry to the blog.
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas my dear xx love you lots xx
