ENCHANTED MUSE

Always loved Olivia Newton -John. Just about everything she did. While when Grease came out I was very young, and I did enjoy it when I have seen it numerous times, call me strange, but it was her in Xanadu that captured my heart. She had this gay boy enthralled with the music, effects, the reason I took up roller skating, and that final scene in the movie blew my little gay mind.

And what's not to love about her number, Whenever You're Away from Me, with the legendary Gene Kelly?  What could she possibly have been intimidated by??? She kept right up with him. A scene I always loved, because of the beauty of it and I sense they had real fun doing it.

  2. Even though I was never a big fan, I still found myself a bit teary-eyed when I heard this news.

  3. Like Jon ... hold onto your pearls Maddie ... I have never seen Xanadu, but imagine how thrilling it must have been to dance with Gene Kelly!
I did have a gay boy crush on her and remember buying her album Totally Hot!
    RIP ONJ!

  4. Well, Olivia came way after my heyday, but I must agree with you. Grease was good, but this old bird enjoyed Xanadu more so. I think it was the camp and the old-time music scenes that got me. That scene with Gene Kelly was lovely.

  6. I've woken up to this tragic news. How terribly sad. What a beautiful soul she was.
It always reminds me to make the most of life. It's easy to get bogged down with the minutia.

I had breast cancer many years ago. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy saved my life. I do worry about it coming back and the death of any woman with breast cancer makes my blood run cold.

R.I.P. Olivia. Thank you for the music.

    1. I just knew you were a hero and survivor! A strong woman indeed. We are glad that you battled that disease and won.I can imagine the worry though. I am also glad to call you a friend. You really are an inspiration, Christina.

    2. I'm not a hero, Madds. The doctors hold that title. It's like being initiated into a club you don't want to be in. Thank goodness for humans that have the education and the audacity to cut a body open and remove the cancer. I'm in awe.
Aw, you've brought a lump to my throat. Yes. We are friends. Separated by miles of sea but friends nevertheless.

I'm just back from taking my fifteen year old grandson to see the battlefields and cemeteries of the first world war in Belgium and France. Row upon row, name after name of young men slaughtered. To die of cancer is terrible but to die on a battlefield, miles from home in such dreadful conditions doesn't bare thinking about.
      Take care, dear one. X

  7. I enjoyed her appearances on Glee. She had such a good sense of humor. Call me sappy, but I Honestly Love You is my favorite song by her. I couldn't get into Xanadu. I tried, really. Got bored. She definitely was a fighter.

  11. Oh, honey... I tell you. I will miss that smile. I thought she would go on forever and outlive us all. She was so kind... all her life. The sun shines a bit less brightly today. Kizzes.

Oh, my, yes. Xanadu is my favorite, too. The music...the dancing on roller skates...the Greek mythology. What's not to love?

  14. Olivia sang a song I think was called Horizontally which was great fun and she did look the bee's knees in Grease.

  15. I remember her music, but most of all her work and support for those affected by cancer and survivors. I only saw "Grease" but today in her memory, I will look for "Xanadu" and "Whenever You're Away From Me." Now her voice and "Let's Get Physical" is playing in my head! xoxo

    2. Yes Savvy in the film Xanadu. Not the best movie by any stretch, but one I found very campy and a case of its sort of bad, but it's good. But loved the music in the film, especially the scene where the retro 40" swing band and the 80's electric rock complete and then join together...that always gives me chills.

  16. Loved her.
And she was such an ally! It's almost funny that I just watched Sordid Lives, where she plays an ex-convict who chews gum and plays the guitar. Loved her in Grease. Iconic.
    Tell me about it, stud!

    She will be missed.
    XOXO

I saw her in concert a few years ago and her voice was as beautiful as on the recordings decades before. Her smile was beautiful. Rest in Peace Olivia.

  20. That clip with Gene Kelly is proof that in addition to country rock and disco, Olivia knew how to swing (and tap.)
