UNUSUAL SUSPECTS

With preparations for tomorrow, a quick post today. Some unusual suspects have been visiting lately. Last week, I captured these pictures...and spur of the moment too. A hawk is setting up residence lately in the tree outside the kitchen window. And sadly there has been some carnage. But tis nature. The poor mourning doves always seem to be the last to take notice when the hawk arrives. The poor dears.

When you come of of the Casa and see Guinea hens running about I think I have had to much gin. But they have ventured down from the lake, and have been scurrying about the ground like crazy. I think they may even be nesting or roosting in the cemetery next door. Which is fine....my neighbors in there are very quiet. But there cool birds to watch and hear with there little clucking. This is another tree outside my door.

You believe this shit? This is where I find Bouvier most mornings awaiting his nut stash for the day. He waits till I come down. I have no idea how he knows when I m here.

And I've been most happy to see that Ash, yes I named it Ash,  is still around. Yes a flying squirrel I first saw when the pandemic came about. Ash visits several times in the night, usually starting around 10 pm and several times through out the night. Its cool to watch her glide from tree to tree.

So you see, it's never a dull moment around here.

  1. we have a red-tailed hawk in the neighbor's field behind our property. he gets the mourning doves too; guess they can't fly as fast as the other birds. the hawk has a very distinctive sound, a high-pitched squawk.

  2. We had deer again in the yard this morning, just meandering through the trees. Carlos and I, and with the cats, who maybe wanted to play[?], sat in the sunroom watching them. Such graceful animals.

It's nice when the critters stop by.

  4. When the hawks soar above here, the other birds scatter...the pigeons are the first to notice and take flight. Otherwise it's pretty boring around here critter-wise. Happy Thanksgiving. Hope the houseboys don't deplete the gin while you're away! Hugs!

    1. It seems the doves or a disabled sparrow gets it here first. And the feathers fly all over the place.

  9. Nature. Red in tooth and claw.
We have a sparrow hawk that's visits the garden occasionally. It's nearly always the black birds that succumb.
    Sad but nature is nature.

  10. Hummingbirds, wild green parrots, wrens, crows, and the occasional seagull around here! There are other birds flying here, but these are the ones I notice. Living in L.A. the most obvious are the LAPD helo-birds! Enjoy Turkey Day, sweetpea! xoxo

The guinea hen are something I've not seen here...they almost look quail like...and have never seen a flying squirrel. What's Bouvier make of Ash? I also love the color of the leaves!

  14. Gliding from tree to tree... the way you glide from adventure to adventure? What a lovely menagerie you have. We have fat squirrels, cardinals, blue jays, crows, sparrows and one chipmunk. 24. Bouvier must be like my cats. Torrie knows when I'll be in work meetings, so she'll come into my spare bedroom and demand my attention. Terri knows I'm going to plop down on the sofa after dinner and either watch TV or play video games. She's always waiting for me on the couch.
