DAME SHIRLEY

I've been in love with Dame Shirley Bassey ever since I heard her recording of Goldfinger for the James Bond movie...Moonraker close behind. Let's not forget the chic History Repeating, with the Propellerheads.  I have about 8 of her cd's and was happy to have seen her perform once, of all places, right here in New Hope when I first moved here. By far, one of my favorite singers is putting mildly. And to date, I don't think anyone did a better job with Bond themes, like Shirley. Just timeless.  Recently Dame Shirley shared a photo of herself wearing a gold sequin dress and matching face mask, her in a sequin gown is shocking right? At 83 she still looks fabulous and still sounds incredible. She had the picture taken in Italy earlier this autumn to mark her 70 years in show business, and this was a nod to Goldfinger. It was with much glee and delight a friend texted me two weeks ago, that the Dame is coming out with her "grand finale" album dedicated to her fans. Of course...you know damn well, this gay boy has already ordered my copy.
What better way to end the week, but with a listen to one of my favorite top 5 songs of all time.......

  2. I adore her! SG god-daughter -- an actress and nightclub singer (REALLY good) does a great imitation of Shirley Bassey.

  5. I'm going to commit a blasphemy here so look out. I'll score her VERY high for those looks, not just now but throughout her career. But her singing voice has always left me...... COLD. There I've said it. S-O-R-R-Y!!!

    1. One famous press reviewer said: “Forget solar panels, windmills and ethanol. If we want to find the greatest natural alternative power source on earth, we should simply harness the lungs of Shirley Bassey.”

    2. No worries here about saying something. I have a few friends that way with her. They either don't like the over the top version of this song, or her singing in general. I feel much how you do about Patti LuPone.

      @Jon- that quote is amazing!

  9. It should be illegal for anyone other than Shirley Bassey to sing Goldfinger! I had no idea another album awaited us. I will have to look into that and fix rights!!!

  10. DAMN! And she still looks incredible!!! Im so jealous you got to see her. I believe she also has sung more Bond themes then anyone else. I personally think that Shirley Bassey should sing every Bond song. I mean - who does it better?

  11. I heard her sing this song a 100 times and it still gives me chills. I wish they'd had her back to sing the theme to Daniel Craig's last installment. Those two would be pure chic and all kinds of swank.

  14. A true Diva, a true singer, who doesn't have to rely on "tricks", autotune, 100 dancers behind her, to perform her special magic!!! Just a great orchestra and her magnificent commanding voice! Like many here I thought her Bond songs were the most memorable. I will have to get that new cd. We have three of them and there treasure. But she's long been favorite singer of ours.

  15. She is truly a Grande Dame of the First Order!

  16. She looks fabulous! She's proof od true real talent, one which does not have to rely on studio magic or background dancers, or lip-synching. Yep, I have to agree, she's always been the best at Bond themes. Though, I must say Adele blew me away.

  17. The Glam.
    The STYLE.
    The Class.
    The Sass.
    Absolutely fantastic. Love her.
Her History Repeating is absolutely awesome. I almost died when The Propellerheads came up with it. I have that in a maxi-single. If I ever do drag, that's the song I'm lip syncing. And you, my dear, will have to drag me up.

    XOXO

  18. I'm shocked at how great she still sounds even though she's 83! Oh yes, I've heard some snippets from the album. Diamonds are Forever is one of my favorite Bonds songs. But Moonraker certainly is a beautiful song.
