AUNTIE MAME

When I was little and all through into my adulthood, I'd say the three biggest role models and figures who shaped me were my maternal grandmother, who passed on to me how to be forgiving, kind to everybody, no matter what, and be charitable and generous. My Mother, who passed on her smart and wise cracking mouth. My mother is soooo Debbie Novotny from Queer as Folk, only more polished. And then my favorite aunt, Barbara, who I think I get my feisty, outspokenness and eccentrics from. Sadly, on Sunday morning I got a call from the mother, telling me my aunt had been taken to the hospital with hernia issues she had been fighting with for some time, had gotten worst. But before the procedure, which was to be on Monday, her blood pressure suddenly dropped drastically, stopping her heart and she sadly passed away late Saturday evening. It came as a complete shock, Needless to say we are all a bit sad. I've had a few good cries already.

For me, as a gay fruitcake, when I say she was Auntie Mame, I mean it! My aunt was nuts, colorful and lively. If Auntie Mame and Maude Findley had a baby the result would be my aunt. I have such fond memories of her since we use to visit them when they lived in a huge Victorian in Westfield NJ. I was always one to hang around her or my grandmothers apron strings while they were in the kitchen. It was probably a miracle she was still here, as when she was young, went sledding in the winter once, and she went right under a car while it was moving and only got a scar from it!!! Not to mention had seven kids. She and my uncle met in Carlise at a dance, even though they were there with other dates. He went to give her his number, but she had left before he could give it to. Weeks later, a good friend gave her the number and they were married the next 65 years. When she entered nursing school, it was there that she and my uncle got married... but kept it secret for two years, as back then, you couldn't be married and in nursing school. But she was determined to stay in school and finish. It wasn't till she graduated that she revealed to all she and my uncle were married. Life then took them to Alaska for two years, with my uncle being in the service. Being cultured she hated it. She always said Alaska is no place for a woman. Once the first babe came, they moved from there to New Jersey and stayed for years till they moved back to Harrisburg after the nest went empty and my uncle retired from teaching physics.

And man could she cook. If you could make it at home, she wouldn't buy it. Store bough baked goods? Piff. She baked bread daily right up to this Thanksgiving. Cakes, cookies, pastries you name, made from scratch. She'd die before buying ready-made pie crust.  She had every Julia Child cookbook and Julia was her idol. She aced every recipe, and she even met her twice on two social occasions in NYC. To this day I have many of my aunt's recipes and will always treasure them. It is she who gave me my love of cooking. You can see why I faced with trepidations cooking this year's Thanksgiving dinner for her. But she said it was excellent, so it meant a lot. I am thankful we had this one last dinner together. My aunt is also the family historian on my mother's side. She had the memory of an elephant. And luckily, I do too.

I also credit my aunt for my love of all things culture. My love of art, music and museums, they would often take me into NYC to view such earthly delights. She adored New York City. Right at my teens years, at 13, she was credited as letting me taste my first gin and tonic at the Algonquin Hotel. She created a gin monster kids! She was overjoyed when her youngest, got a position as lead violaist with the New York Philharmonic, before going on to the Philly Orchestra and then the Chattanooga Symphony. She and my uncle were still members of the New York Phil, Philly Orch, and Chattanooga symphonies, The Met, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. They always gave to the local PBS station here and were good members of our local classical radio station. Art was very, very important to her.

As was politics. Oh LORD!!! She could not take even a liberal republican, or even a conservative Democrat.  So, I feel as though on the day she passed, the same day as Bob Dole died, she arrived at the pearly gates with him, and gave him a huge rant! She was famous for having a stiffener and going off on Julia Sugarbaker rants. The newspapers loved her. She and my uncle are as liberal as one can get. I mean, I am 90% sure they still smoked weed here and there.  She had no time for right wing conservative bullshit and having church or politicians telling anyone what to do with their bodies or how to live. But she would sit and talk to anyone no matter what party. She would love good debate. I think that's why she liked my ex who was in politics. Right up till the end, she was on the fresh tip of everything. And she disregarded anyone who was racist or a bigot.

She and my uncle I also credit as passing on my love for the planet. The environment and nature and gardening were loves of hers. She taught me to slow down and take it all in. She instilled in me and her own children to tend to the earth and give back. I do think like myself, the current condition of the earth got her depressed at times. Of course, another thing... my aunt would never be seen in public in pants. I never saw her in pants. Till she passed on at 90, she only ever wore skirts and medium size heels, flowy blouses, and long tailored dusters. And hats.  And she could be eccentric. Some, things were outrageous. It might be a bit much to go to the farmers market with an ostrich feather handbag in one hand and her huge wicker market basket in the other. Or wear about 20 bangles, or wear a man's pork pie hat in the winter! Right before she stopped smoking, she used one of those long cigarette sticks, before moving on to a pipe, and finally cigars. She ended up not smoking anything eventually. The men at the cigar shop must have though she was a hoot. And she was. She loved her happy hour too. To my knowledge she had a gin or two every evening, and also had a scotch as a nightcap before bed. And like auntie Mame never liked a cocktail shaken, she said it bruised the ice. I always called her Auntie Mame and she loved it. Just at Thanksgiving again, she reminded me that when I settle down again, to make sure I pick someone in the arts. She thinks that's why none of the other relationships worked out. She always said, "it will take a creative guy to be with such a fabulous queen" See why I loved her.

Needless to say, these don't even tip the iceberg with my memories of her or even all my traits I get from her. Her last wish was to have her body donated to science, which she is currently enroute to Philly. She said even dead, she hoped if she could be of help with a cause, why not? Science was also very important to her. She will then be cremated and sent back to us. We have a memorial planned for January when all her kids will arrive from Washington, California, Texas, New York, Tennesse, Massachusetts, Colorado, and my dear cousins from Chicago and Boston. Since her stunning rose garden was her pride and joy, my uncle will, with us all present, scatter her ashes through her rose gardens. Her one son has already booked a restaurant for us alone to enjoy a nice dinner in her honor, where no doubt, we will have copious amounts of stiffeners to toast her and talk of art and politics and even maybe enjoy a cigar. But boy, will the holidays be feeling a void without her with us. But she wouldn't want us to be sad. As the song from the movie went and as she would agree, she'd say live life.
55th Anniversary!

Open a new window, open a new door,
Travel a new highway, that's never been tried before.

TUPPERWARE QUEEN

Aunt Barbara was the Tupperware Queen...one of the highest selling consultants with the company in the country. In her heyday, Jennifer Bobbi was Long Island's top queen selling 6 figures worth of the kitchenware, and was the toast of town with her vintage retro looks, huge beehive hair do, and the hilarity that would ensue at these Tupperware parties. I have long adored her, had the privilege  to attend one... and her You Tube videos were coming fast and furious. For a bit over a decade she hosted parties and ran her business as Aunt Barbara, a drag queen, whose brash attitude and sassy comebacks were part of her act.

Bobbi was living as a man at the time, and portraying Aunt Barbara allowed her to dress up in 1960's era dresses and play hostess. But she didn't want to just act like her female drag persona...from a very young age she knew she was meant to be a woman. I have posted about Jennifer Bobbi's story before, but with trans coming out of the closet even more so, and having their rights curtailed and threatened, I thought it was worth telling again, and just shows how we have a long way to go with supporting our trans citizens, EVEN within our own LGBTQ community. Bobbi says that she held it inside through most of her teens and into her twenties and finally at one point told her family she felt biologically and physically male, but intuitively, mentally and organically was female, and had his whole life. Not only was her family not as supportive as she thought they might be, but she was also surprised by how many of her clients ,  some even LGBT suddenly treated her. She was confused why they wouldn't except her as they accepted Aunt Barbara, since she just an extension of who Jennifer is. She finally decided to transition, and then after, when word got out, people began canceling their Tupperware parties and her business in months plummeted and suffered badly, all because she transitioned. To me, it just boggles my mind to this day why people are so unnerved by people transiting. First off, it's that persons business to do as they see fit to make themselves happy to be their true self and lead a happy life. And 2, it doesn't effect anyone else' life if one transitions, so why all the hoopla, it's none of their business. And had people not known she transitioned, they would have no idea anyway...so what's the difference?  Aunt Barbara was still Aunt Barbara. I love this clip. I still can't get through with a dry eye. And this shows how just one life can change and crumble just because of transitioning. This is her story of how she came out to her true self.

My other issue with the whole trans issue  is when it comes to drag...just because one is born a cis gender male, doesn't mean they are the only ones to be drag queens. Or why can't a gay boy be a drag king??? I think the time has arrived to let people be who or want they want to be. I still love Jennifer Bobbi as herself , or if she want to be Aunt Barbara. It time to give support and understanding to these people. And when she does Aunt Barbara these days she looks fucking fierce!

YOU GO WITH YOUR BAD SELF GURL!

TUPPERWARE QUEEN COMES OUT

Good evening dear readers, it's the Mistress here. Now regular readers of the blog will know that I have loverd and adored Aunt Barbara,  Long Island’s Tupperware queen, who was selling hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of kitchenware and earning herself a six-figure salary, along with over 10 years of hilarious videos on You Tube , which I featured some right here.... some of you even got her birthday message from me here.  For over a decade in New York, she hosted parties and ran her business as Aunt Barbara, a drag queen whose brash attitude, libation soaked personality, snappy accent, and sassy comebacks were part of her act.  Aunt Barbara's creator, Bobbi was living as a man at the time, and portraying Aunt Barbara allowed her to dress up in 1960s-era dresses and a black bob wig to host her Tupperware parties, to the delight of her clients.
Women and gay men no matter who they are, seem to love Aunt Barbara — even the more conservative, Trump-supporting women among the crowd. But she didn’t want to just act like her female character; she said that from a very young age, she knew she was a woman. Bobbi held it inside through his teenage years into his 20s, and finally, at one point when he thought his parents could not figure him out, his mother sat down with him, and she said, ‘We know that you’re gay. We know that you’re homosexual," But what Bobbi thought was that is half the story. It’s half the story because he was attracted to men and he was biologically and physically a male, but intuitively, mentally, organically, Bobbi was a female. When Bobbi came out as a trans woman on April 1, 2016, she said, she was surprised by how some of her clients suddenly treated her. Bobbi, now Jennifer considered Aunt Barbara just a character of who she is.  Jennifer says she  guessed she thought that they accepted Aunt Barbara, why wouldn’t they accept her? After all she was just the person who’s behind Aunt Barbara. But after her transition, people began canceling their Tupperware parties, she said, and her business suffered big time.  Just goes to show how far we have to go with our Trans folks yet.  I say congrats to her and wish her well on her endeavors.
This is Jennifer's story. With her outlook, I know she will forge a wonderful new life.

Well Wishes for David and Kailyn

The Mistress would like to take the time to send some well wishes to two very special people today. After all, I like to spread cheer! First up a very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my girl Kailyn!!!

I hope you have a wonderful and enjoyable day, and celebrate with a cock-a-tail or two, after all, as Kasha Davis would say "There's always time for a cocktail!" Kailyn and I met through our blogs. She was the one of the first to comment here at A Day With the Mistress Borhgese. And I was amazed at how much we had in common, things we liked and things we like to do-drink! You may recall she was also hostess with the mostess on our San Francisco trip last summer, when she took us on a tour of Napa Valley and it's vineyards. A day I will always remember. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN GIRL AND ENJOY MANY.....

And as is custom with the Mistress, Aunt Barbara is here to sing your song!

Second, I would like to send a speedy recovery and get well wishes to my good friend and sister Mame, AKA David Dust as he has been way under the weather and now in the hospital.

When I talked with her over the weekend she didn't sound herself as we were dishing the dirt, and he said I should get my black out and wear it for at least a year and then I could switch to a dark purple! Well, I talked to her last night and he is now on the mend and turns out he did have pneumonia, a very nasty case of it too. She would do anything to get Mama Bunny up there for a visit!!! But she did arrive, and is tending to our bunny leader. Funny how just a mother presences will make you feel 50% better, doesn't it? But Mame says she is feeling a little better and I can put the black away. So girl, stay relaxed, take care, and stay calm and let all the hot doctors do the rest!!! I would also like to thank Kayce, Mame's Executive Assistant and Public Relations guru for keeping everyone abreast of David's recovery, you are so sweet!!!

Grande Dame of the Week

The fabulous Long Island housewife...Aunt Barbara!

Meet Aunt Barbara. She is one funny and fierce diva! If you haven't seen her, on You Tube videos yet, they are funny as hell! She is the creation of Robert Suchan who was cash strapped, and decided to use his own aunt as inspiration to create his Aunt Barbara to sell Tupperware. And did it pay off. Aunt Barbara is now one of the highest selling Tupperware consultants in the company. And this isn't your grandmother's party either. Aunt Barbara has also made You Tube videos in addition, giving tips and product knowledge on Tupperware all the while making us laugh, meeting her hilarious friends, and hearing about her Sanka coffee clutches and her shopping sprees at the Gertz Department Store. Her videos are some of the most popular videos on You Tube and her videos are among the most hit on that website also! So if your in the Long Island area look up this housewife for a Tupperware party of your own at Aunt Barbara's website.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMIE!

Girl, all I can say is HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! I hope you will have a great day today! I have known Mame, or David Dust, one of my closest and dearest friends for years and years and years now and I can't tell y'all how good a friend Mame is. If there is one person to keep one in stitches and laughter it's my good friend Mame. Since y'all like old stories of Maddie and Mame one of her birthday's does come to mind. It was one of the very first birthday parties they had for her when I first met Mame. Our gang was very fond of throwing a cock-a-tail party for anything. Well our good friend Glen, God rest his soul, had a birthday party for Mame one year. I remember it being very hot and poor Glen didn't have on the air so we were all fanning ourselves with paper plates when the host wasn't looking. I remember both our faces melting before our eyes.It was a nice turn out and it was where Mame and I really bonded. I gave her a bottle of liquor of some kind, and we were thick ever since. And she did get some swell presents that year. Mame got her first pearl necklace, not that kind, get your minds out of the gutter, the kind every respectable woman has, a strand of lovely creme colored pearls. She had received a fan I believe and she also receive some adult novelties never to be seen again. (Note to self, when I go up this weekend remind me to look under the cushions of the sofa!)
Oh, anywho, it was a lovely party and we later just laughed and talked the night away. It was the night we really bonded like I said and we were the blond twins ever since when we went to the local cha-cha palace. And it was also Mame, Mamie! who introduced me to the South American mens! Variety is the spice of life she said. So I'd like to take this time to say thank-you for being my good life long friend, sister and family! You have been there through the good and bad, family losses and all the drunken calls, many dinners, parties, camp fires, bean dip fests and just to talk. Hell, a year ago I started this blog because of your inspiration. Thank you for being who you are. I can't wait for this weekend! You, me, Ginger, and the Urges! This is just spelling a good time!

And I just couldn't resist a birthday greeting from Aunt Barbara! Again Happy Birthday Mame! We love ya!

Don't be Showing Your What's Gone Sour

While at the mall today it occured to me there were alot of chunky girls wearing these belly shirts. And low cut jeans. With the top of their thongs sticking out. First of all I wonder why they weren't wearing any jackets as we just had a ice storm on Friday and it looked like a winter wonderland and was only 25 degrees out. Second,I wondered why they didn't buy the rest of the shirt? I guess I don't understand why they aren't dressing better, instead of clothes that look silly. I think my favorite Long Island diva can sum it more, while channeling it in a Chris Crocker moment.

Grande Dame of the Week...

This week the Grand Dame of the Week is...Aunt Barbara! Aunt Barbara has been doing drag some time now. I came across her a year and a half ago on the old you tube and I laughed my ass off. The whole routine is surrounded around selling Tupperware, which she does for a real living. One day Aunt Barbara decided to take her persona and what she did for a living and do a drag act with it. Turns out it wasn't such a bad idea! She is now the number three consultant in the country for Tupperware sales and she will actually come to your home with the routine. She then went on to make videos for you tube, and has one of the most hit videos. The first time I saw her I had to grab for a tissue I was laughing so hard! So, if you haven't seen her yet you must grab a Stella Doro cookie and a cup of Sanka and enjoy!! These are two of my favorites!
