FOR DUTCHESS DEEDLES

Earlier  today in my Mondays post I just had to share my latest instagram obsession with you in the form of Juniper, a lively red fox who lives with his human owner and several dogs. I have always enjoy fox...such beautiful and rascally creatures. It wasn't till I moved to Bucks Country that I first got close to them. Two summer ago while sitting out late one night enjoying the heat and a libation, a fox came almost right up to me and just sat.....inches from me. We just sat and stared at each other for minutes. Finally the fox moved along....and it is a moment I still treasure. But years ago when I was with the ex, did we have our first encounter. In the middle of the night, I woke the Boy Toy up and asked if he heard a woman screaming? After a couple minutes he too heard it. We both were terrified. It sounded as though a woman was being beaten or worst...murdered. We called the police department and explained in a near by condo someone was screaming for help. Minutes later, a cop came to our door, ask about the screaming, and he left, to walk the units to find who was in trouble.  We started to hear the screams again. Louder. After what seemed forever, the officer came back to the door laughing and asked how long we lived here. Just moved in three months ago we told him. He explained it was fox....and admitted they do sound terrifying at night and completely understood.  We all laughed. But it took a awhile to get used to hearing that. Just Saturday night when I was out in the snow taking pictures I could hear the fox calling, but now it calms me to know their out there. So this video is for our dear Dutchess Deedles,as I have deemed her, who had her own encounter with peacock screams, which I too have near me....but this is even worst if your not used to it.

Enjoy!!!!

    1. Agnes..... In the previous post I was explaining to Dutchess Deedles that when you hear this, it is either two foxes defending their territory, or food stash, or a female calling after her young ones.

  8. Who knew such gorgeous creatures would unleash such an otherworldly sound!?!?!

The most terrifying sound I ever encountered was from a pissed off barn owl we disturbed when we entered the barn. I thought a demon had been summoned from hell!!!

I can relate to your admiration for the fox. Once upon a time, I worked in the Middle East. It was an extraordinary experience. Among the most memorable moments was making friends with a Fennec Fox, a Sand Cat, and even some Maus.

I envy you with your amazing wildlife in the neighborhood. It all seems very charming!

    3. @eroswings- Even with the warning, that sound jump started my heart big time! Last time I heard a sound like that was forty-one years ago as I was pushing a ten pound baby out of my then quite scrawny body! We're still not sure if it was me or my balder half that was screaming.

  10. OH DEAR LORD!!!! Put them together with peacocks and you have a massacre! Your story is hilarious, sweetie, but I would've called the cops too! Such hellacious sounds coming from such cute critters. Thanks for sharing, Maddie (not being sarcastic here). I really did want to know how they sounded. Duchess Deedles? I like it!

    1. Blood curddlering Right? Imagine hearing that out of a dead sleep at 2am.

    2. Blood curdling ain't the half of it, especially one ends up dreaming about fox-peacock hybrids coming after you screaming while wild turkeys sit on the sidelines gobbling ominously awaiting their turn! I've incorporated stuff like this in my dreams since I was a child. It's less frequent now, but still very vivid!

    3. Jesus Christ.... what in hell are you drinking before going to bed at night girl?

    4. Maddie, I can't drink anymore, but give me a banana (not a euphemism) before bedtime and I'll have a weird nightmare every time!

    5. Actually if I have anything sweet before mad I will dream all night, one long dream, or have multiple dreams.

  11. Charming. Raccoons are also ear splitting. They sound sort of like the way the creature in Alien looks.

  12. I've never been as close to a fox as you were, but a fox did get into my back yard once when I lived in Texas - - and I had a six-foot fence!

Late at night here in the wilderness I sometimes hear screams that sound human. I always attribute it to coyotes - - but it could very well be a fox.

    1. I think I read fox are very crafty at getting over or under a fence. They are also amazing diggers.

  14. Peacocks fortunately usually only call in the morning, foxes usually do it at night so it's startling. I remember a family member nearly trampling me one night in panic, I had to calm her down and at first she wouldn't believe it was only a fox. They are a great ally in reducing the mouse population, way better than cats. Another bad scream at night is the call of a female porcupine, it will make the hair stand on your head if you don't know what it is.

    1. My aunt, who lived next door to this place, told me at the time that it was the male peacocks that did all of the hollering. They only did it during mating season. I guess there were no peahens in this establishment, because these suckers seemed to be horny day and night. I remember wishing that they were gay just to get some peace (so to speak).

    2. @Sooo- I will have to look that up to hear it. Thankfully we have none around here.

@Deedles- I do love me some gay pea-cocks. What a novelty that is right? But an improvement over being sexual harassed by Og!!!!!
