EASTERN REDBUD
While the dogwoods are just about to open, the Eastern Redbud bloomed and looks spectacular with its color! And the gratuitous, dainty lawn violets always make me happy.
We had lawn violets in an open area at our rental house in New Haven. They were growing through the gravel (maybe that makes them gravel violets). They were lush and beautiful, so I placed stepping stones through them. It was charming.
That actually sounds very pretty Mitchell. I don't know how these violets ever came to be. I assume Birds must have poop something in the lawn, but every time they've multiplied everywhere. I love them.
That redbud is a stunning tree - a "sister" to one of my personal faves, the "Judas Tree", which we see more frequently over here in the UK. It's bizarre how close to the trunk and branches those flowers grow.
Violets are wonderful! Their seed-pods (if you are lucky enough to find one) literally explode, sending the tiny seeds flying quite a distance. The seeds are then carried by ants (who are attracted to a tiny coating of fatty gel) to their nests and when they or their larvae have finished with them, out they go with the rest of the rubbish from the nest, to grow in their new location.
Well that explains it Mr Attenborough! I figured it had to be nature related. In the past I know when birds eat seeds of certain flowers and plants, and then rid the house of contents those flowers have grown where the rubbish went out. But this whole process sounds fascinating. And I too have thought the same about the flowers of these trees they're so close to the stems in the bark. I picked a few branches off and put them in a vase with water. That was a week ago and they still look fabulous.
Some needed relief and beauty from all the seriousness in our lives. So refreshing and hopeful.

DeleteShould be called Eastern Pinkbud, but pretty nonetheless.

I love the Redbud trees; such a shock of color!
ReplyDeleteOooo. Those tiny violets. I wonder if they would grow here?
ReplyDeleteI don't know if they would or not I have a feeling they're probably not very heat resistant. I only ever seem to see them here in the spring.
