EASTER WEEKEND

Nothing like a cup full of cock on Good Friday heh?!?

These little feathery cocks were my grandmothers from sometime in the 50's and in remarkable shape. As many know, I love to add some holiday touches to some of the holidays and have traditions and good memories around most of them. I like to decorate minimally and give a nod to some holidays. It keeps the house fun, and ever changing, and gives reference to each season. So this year I dug these little cockrels out and added them to the little sugar bowl that was my aunts. Shall we take some sight in around the Casa?

One of many of the dogwood getting ready for a full showing.

More of my grandmothers decorations...a hen and rabbit candle.

Handpainted eggs my mother did.
My dyed eggs I did this year.
Two Lefton rabbits that were a vintage find. I placed them in a bell jar with a spring scene.
On the desk is my grandmothers green Moser glass rabbit candy dish along with pictures of my maternal grandparents. I was always much closer to them than my paternal set, as my grandfather on my dads side was passed before my birth, and my paternal grandmother passing before I was 2. But my maternal grandparent we're like second parents and are most likely where I get my love of holidays and commemorating each. Especially my grandfather. He LOVED Easter. It was definitely his favorite. My grandmother was church going, but my grandfather never stepped foot in a church except to give his daughters away for marriage. But come Easter he'd dress to the nines, hat included, and he and my grandmother would do the promenade of Easter in their finery in downtown Harrisburg. This is him from a Worlds Fair, sitting on the moon. Man in the moon? It's my favorite picture of him.

I will be blogging around this weekend but may be tired up as the Lad is visiting so I may be hit or miss. Looking forward to a nice, visit. Have I got some hot crossed buns, and a nice full Easter basket waiting for him!!!!!

    1. My mother always tells me that I definitely got the looks from her side of the family. Not that my dad's side was bad looking mind you, but I look more like her side of the family.

  6. I love the Vintage Easter Decor and the Sentiment of giving them pride of place during the Holidays. Your Grandfather was a good looking guy. I too was closer to my Maternal Grandparents... for similar reasons since my Dad's biological Father Died long before I was Born and he didn't even know his Dad. And I didn't get to meet my Paternal Gramma until I was almost an Adult, whereas I'd always known my Mom's Parents. I love the Eggs your Mom made and your dyed Eggs turned out pretty good too. The Cup full of Cock made me Smile, those are some darling little Cockrels. You've displayed your Buns before... and, yes, the Lad will be thrilled.

    1. This post could sort of be my Ode to Dawn! I think my mother had told me when my paternal grandfather passed away, my grandmother only lasted a year. Family on that side said she likely died of a broken heart because she missed her husband. They apparently were practically inseparable.

    1. My mother told me once that my grandfather apparently was popular with the boys and girls. I'm not quite sure what that means or if it got racy but there's that. And if you don't make it back Happy Easter to you too Christina! 🐣🐰🐥

  8. Is it just optical, or is your grandfather a short person as well as a looker?

    1. A funny story concerning my grandfather that I only recently just learned about 3 years ago. He was married to another woman before my grandmother. A hot spicy Latina woman named Carmelita. The marriage unfortunately didn't last as when he was in the service got kicked by a donkey right in the nuts. The doctor said he would probably most likely be sterile and wouldn't produce kids. When Carmelita learned the news she was very upset and ended up divorcing my grandfather. But the joke ended up on her as he met my grandmother, and they went on to have seven kids! Often wonder if that ever got back to Carmelita.

  13. That is an absolutely lovely photo of your grandfather. I have some of my grandmother's hand-painted ceramics pieces that I put out (for Easter and Christmas as well); they are treasured. Ceramics used to be a thing back in the 70s. I don't remember what I did yesterday, but I have vivid memories of my mom, grandmother, and I going to ceramics classes when I was young.

    1. Oh I remember doing ceramics too. They were till quite popular in the 80's. My mother got me into doing them at least till high school started. I did take a few pottery classes in high school too. We had a very nice ceramics class down the road that a couple owned. I loved going i and seeing all the white creations with the possibilities of finishing them. I'm glad you still display your treasures Elle.

  15. Your holiday vignettes are always a pleasure to see -- the white and pink bunnies under the glass cloche are my fave! Your tulips and dyed eggs are so bright and cheery -- we can all use some of that (especially since it snowed again here last night). Your Grampa was sure easy on the eyes too... Happy Easter to you and yours, Maddie!!

  16. Loved this! I wish the decorations bug bit me. But with Czech grandparents, and I think you said on your dad's side once, it's Irish/ Dutch...is it any wonder you got nice looks and fine assets?
