Queen Onya Nurve
After a great season, it was pretty easy to see why Onya was crowned the Queen. She checked all the boxes henny. And proved in the final lip synch that she didn't need reveal after reveal, but just old school, attitude and performance to snatch that crown! I was telling Sixpence the reason I always like the Lip Synch Lalaparozza and the finale shows is because it's really the only time the queens can be themselves with no restrictions to show their real style with exception to entrance looks. This finale didn't disappoint. All of Onya looks were jaw dropping.
My other favorites were, after Onya...
Accacia Forgot
Maybe she should have gone bigger on the show, and she might have went further. But this...I do believe I even squealed with excitement when her heel hit the corner and came out. I love big and huge gowns and she brought it. Now THIS is finale Eleganza...huge coiffed updo, gorgeous gown and color and a snatched waist. And the Forget-me-Not flowers? Very Clever Accasia!
Suzie Toot
Of course, my girl Susan Tooth would be here!!! Suzie has done it again! She went and did a nod to Little Shop of Horrors again, this time the whole plant, with her arms as the tentacles. Theatre kid slay! Color-gorge, hair-gorge, makeup-gorge. I also loved the snapping flower pods when she emerged as almost saying how she was eating the girls up all season. Never mind she also won the most money right behind Onya!
Crystal Envy
My gal pal was cool, sleek and it was cunty and sooooo Crystal.Loved the cutouts and the draping of the back velvet, but I did say to her the corset part should be larger and tighter to counteract the odd fit on her torso and her breast contour. Girl the titties look far apart. She wasn't to mad...I did secure her for the gay pride festivities her in Harrisburg come Pride month for the committee.
Lydia B Kollins
Jewels Sparkles
No Drag Race finale would be complete without a massive fuckoff gown and not since Voilet Chachki have I seen one done so well. Mind you, I was not the biggest fan of Jewels this season, but I admit this is Princess Peach meets Ariana Grande, with a pinch of Lana Del Rey and a cup of Priscilla Presley meets cunt. This look is literally insane and moved well and fits right into the overreaching canon of Jewels' work.
And three honorable mentions...
Joella
Probably the best I have ever seen her look and a fun nod to a huge disaster from the season that cost her to go home and sunk her faster that the Titanic went down.
Kori King
It's no secret I couldn't stand Kori King. Still don't know how she got by so long with the same old beaten looks every challenge, and I still don't enjoy him. She'd be perfect for a Mister Ed reboot, but I give the bitch kudos for FINALLY bring a stunning, cunty Power Ranger villain look and it eats. She got it all right with this one including a high wig.
And Arrietty
Some astounding looks. I’m not at all a fan of the prosthetic face of Arrietty.
ReplyDeleteI realize there's a lot of work in prosthetics but I think at that point it goes from drag to performance art.
DeleteWhen I saw Jewels float out in that gown...well, it took me back. Like a mixture of old Hollywood and southern belle.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Whoever designed that gown did an excellent job because it moved like liquid.
DeleteLove the looks, and love Onya's win; and you are spot on about her not needing reveal after reveal.
ReplyDeleteAnd Suzie Toots Little Hop of Horrors number was gorgeous and totally Suzie.
Kori King? Nope. This was just a gown version of everything she wore this season ... I fought the yawns and the yawns won.
Jewels? Didn't care for her, but this look stunned, though I like your description best:
"Princess Peach meets Ariana Grande, with a pinch of Lana Del Rey and a cup of Priscilla Presley meets cunt."
And I agree about the face prosthetic on Arrietty; not for the finale.
All in all a good season with some great, and some not so, queens.
Poor Hormona.....she was not shown much love. And Suzie! She will go on to be on the level of Jinkx Monsoon, I think.
DeleteOhhh yes!
ReplyDeleteI was WAITING for this. When you know, you KNOW. I love it when you give us your opinions on RPDR. I swear if we lived closer we’d have to do a podcast. Same with Upton and music. I absolutely agree with you here, but I did like Jewels. She’ll go far. Arriety is super creative but girl should use her trauma (whatever that is) for good. She just comes across as mean. And Onya? I agree. She was strong but kind of reserved. I think the makeover woke her up. I saw her in Good Morning America and girl ate.
XOXO
Sixpence
I don't know what it was about Jules that bugged me. I think it was her getting on everyone doing the same old thing over and over, yeah her repertoire was very limited, especially when I came to performing. Where as Susie I could see going into many genres and pulling it off with ease. And could you imagine I was doing a podcast. You'd be sober and I'd be tipsy. Plus we'd somehow go from talking about drag into sex and Men!
DeleteI agree, Onya was easily the most polished of all of the ladies this season. As for bitchiness, Sam Star was pleasant when she did it but Arriety was a total mean girl.
ReplyDeleteArrietty reminds me of a good Batman villainous.
DeleteDonald Duck should be pleased with these drag queens, keeping lots of dressmakers in business!
ReplyDeleteThe dump and the Republicans would only be pleased if they were Republican Housewives. But these dressmakers are all gay men so they would be shitting bricks over that.
DeleteExcellent post and recap of sorts and I too was happy for Onya. But I must say my favorite look of the whole entire night was Accacia! Her hair and that gown was absolutely breathtaking. I'm not sure why she's not getting more attention over this. While she wasn't one of my favorites she definitely had some very creative looks on the season. I feel that she was very easily discounted.
ReplyDeleteQueen nerve has a mouth like a split melon x
ReplyDeleteLike you, Maddie, I really like the big, colourful structured and over-the-top looks. Now I understand why Onya Nurve wore a simpler red sequinned suit for the finale -- her latte look was STUNNING! I also agree wholeheartedly with your choices of Accacia Forgot's & Suzie Toot's outfits. And Crystal Envy's bodice/bustier should have been higher with either underwire or tape to push his boobs up and together... otherwise, his black and white dress is very glamorous and clearly Art Deco inspired. Are the clothing designers ever featured? It would be interesting to see a show about how the padded looks are created.
ReplyDeleteWell, not really. But many queens on the show have had their ensembles created mostly by seamstress friends or well-known fashion designers in the community like Florence D' Lee, a NYC based fashion and costume designer....and this seasons Lexi had many looks created by Utica, a past queen who competed herself on drag race and ended up in the top 5. But Ru has never had any of them on. You would not believe Tundra what the queens go threw after they find out they are going to be on the show, not to mention how much they spend. Once accepted on, they get a list of the challenges and runway themes and have to have 90% of the looks made and ready to go. It's insane! That could be a post alone. Many also have other very notable queens doing their wigs too.
DeleteSuzie was robbed.
ReplyDeleteRobbed, raped and clubbed!!!!
Deletesuch glamor!
