I don't know where the time went. Last weekend found the Mistress and rest of the Clan in Philadelphia for the Gay Pride Parade and Festival. It moved the date up for the first time, as to not compete with New York City's, as most of us proper queens like to attend both. But Philly didn't disappoint as I understand over 600,000 converged on the city over the course of the three days. The second highest attendance since World Pride year. This year things were done much differently and better in my opinion; the city took advantage of nearly all parts of the city. The parade itself convened at 6th and Walnut streets, with the country's biggest gay pride flag to date, at over 400 feet of rainbow stripes, starting from the art museum steps, and made its way to the parade kick off and snaked its way along the parade route. A sight to be seen for sure. Wind billowed through the parade's massive rainbow flag. It took hundreds of marchers, side by side to carry it, and the wind allowed many to walk and snap photos of the flag's underside. A moving sight. The parade was celebration and protest, as at one point Pro Palestinians split the parade briefly but was peacefully done. The parade finished up after a two-hour spectacle right in the heart of the gayborhood, where the street festival is now held. Vendors, art and craft artisans, and gay pride wears and food trucks galore were available... not to mention the queens poured into the pubs and bars and clubs. Here's some snaps from the Pride with some help from clan member Preston.
We later caught these dykes on bikes in one of the pubs, and they were good time girls!!!! They went shot for shot with little ole me.
Another first for the event was the organized drag queen story time given by Olive D' Nightlife, Philly legend Brittany Lynn and Farrah Mascara at the National Constitution Center and Independance Hall. I hear several hundred attendees helped set the world record for attendance at such an event, marking the start of Pride Month in the birthplace of America. How fucking cool is that??? Ever think we 'd see that? I guess it's just a little bit of history repeating.... men wearing wigs in the building again, lol!! The queens read, Hello, Philadelphia, Twas the Night Before Pride, The Family Book, and Kevin the Unicorn: It's Not all Rainbows. Of course I couldn't not visit Giovanni's Room without getting some books. Damn I love that place. We also encountered many little blocks parties, which seemed to be going on all over. Nothing it seems will hold back the LGBTQ in Philly. I think the message was very clearly sent.Drag friend It's Bev Bitch!
Philly legend Brittany Lynn
Wee morning hours...or is it the walk of shame????
As you can see the famous Woody's Nightclub's Dance fest was packed with dancing in the streets the night before the parade and went right on till 2:30am!!!! It was a blast. From what I recall.
And Pride still isn't over. The city has planned events all over the city for the whole month, like extra regional drag shows, Philadelphia Pride Bar Crawl on the 17th, Pride Run on the 15, Pride Day at the Philly Zoo, The Love is Love and Queeraplooza Block Parties, The Philadelphia Orchestra Pride Night, and the Pride Skate Roller Rink at City Hall. Plus, I have Harrisburg Pride and Rehoboth Beach Pride, a first for me, coming up yet. If you blog and attend a Pride show us pictures, I think it's great getting to see the different Prides from all around. You can check out the PHILLY GAY CALENDAR for complete list of events and club dates.
Happy Gay Pride🏳🌈
Oh those poor dykes. I hope they did not succumb to alcohol poisoning.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry Lurker, they gave me a run for my money! They were a hoot!
DeleteFor years and years, San Francisco and Los Angeles alternated which city would have thier Pride on the weekend closest to the Stonewall anniversary, but now, I think they've given that up because why be cooperative when you can be shit-stirrin' bitches?
ReplyDeletePhilly and NYC were the same weekend for years. But a new group took over the Pride here and moved it up. The queens are rejoicing.
DeleteLooks like Ya'll had a Fab Time.....
ReplyDeleteUplifting and empowering. Wish I was there!
ReplyDeleteWish I was there.
ReplyDeleteYou can just feel the joy in the photos!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was one of the best Prides Philly ever had, The huge flag was especially meaningful. But the story time drag time was a huge fuck you to the GOP!!!!!!!!! Who would have ever thought we'd see a drag queen story time in the building where it all began?????? You know republicans from out of the area had to be shitting themselves.
ReplyDeleteAnd you did a walk of shame???? Im shocked.
Oh you know republicans in the rest of the state and beyond.... their heads blew.
DeleteExcellent picture and recap!!!!! It was a blast! I wish I could have caught up and met you finally...but it was so crazy. I wonder if I saw your fine ass?
ReplyDeleteAlso Giovanni's Room has guest authors there all week and this weekend doing reading from there books. I think it's great we still have a local, small business and gay owned bookshop here.
I adore that place. Every trip to Philly I have to visit! Let's meet up next time. I got your email late
DeleteLooks fun and fabulous! Thanks for showing us all the great photos!
ReplyDeleteGreat fun! Ours is now held in September to avoid the heat. It's been pretty lame for the past decade, or so.
ReplyDeleteIt's only a walk of shame if you are weeing while walking.
ReplyDeleteOh my. Im safe then.
DeleteThat looked like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteWe all need free hugs! It looks so full of life, and fun. Glad you had a great time!
ReplyDeleteSx
My problem is I give to many things out free.
DeleteLooks simply marvelous
ReplyDeleteOMG This is so much fun!
ReplyDeleteAnd so full of FABULOUS!
Love me some DOB. I just can imagine them putting up a fierce battle with you. That bar made its day with that drinking!
And I love the idea of Drag performers being showcased. Bet the Repugs in the city had a fit.
Thanks for the pics!!
XOXO
Surprisingly the few Republican politicians in the city are liberal when it comes to lifestyle and hot button topics...their just financially Republican. The one Democratic was one who had issue with the drag queen story hour at independence hall. We were all baffled.
DeleteI can agree with that. All the politicians in the city thought it was a great idea and supported that. Matter of fact the one republican used to do more for the city than the one lazy ass democrat ever did. Thanks heavens they were replaced. They aren't there to represent us sitting on their ass. But just about every level in the city is Dems.
DeleteLooks like a fun time.
ReplyDeleteWell, Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love.:) Love the colors laid out on the steps of the art museum and your fots of all the fun.:) God bless the drag queens and their storybook readings in such historic settings. Giovanni’s Room is an institution, and a good reason to support local bookstores. :-)
ReplyDeleteOne of the last of its kind. It's great to see it still going well and thriving.
DeleteImagine sewing that flag..!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a fantabulosa time, sweetie - and at a guess, you were the "good time that was had by all". Again! Jx
And Again and Again...two more to go!
DeleteThe city was certainly jammed packed with Pride Goers this year. And a long parade too. The Philly Orchestra Pride night promises some good music....its bound to be a crowd pleaser is all I can say.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures!
I need to do a Pride in Philly before I get old. It would have been worth it just seeing the flag go along the parade route. I will say Philly has a great gayborhood from what I recall from my visit last time.
ReplyDeleteTundra Bunny here...
ReplyDeleteLove Bev Bitch's wig!! What is it made of? Brittany Lynn's blue ruffled outfit is fabulous too -- reminds of an Argentinian rhumba band's ruffled shirts in an old movie I watched last night: Criss Cross (1948).
Aren't those wig cool? They were actually invented by an Australian drag queen and they're actually made of carves cut and shapes foam. I think I vaguely remember that movie. It was a good pride!
