Traditional Lights or LED's, I Ask

On Friday I'll be off work and will be in the throws of putting up the Christmas tree and decking the halls. It got me to thinking should I use my traditional Christmas lights or switch to LED'S? You can see the difference.

The festive holiday spirit will never be complete without Christmas decorations and Christmas lights. There is just something beautiful and mysteriously enchanting about twinkling lights and decorating Christmas trees. No matter how much it feels good to prepare for the holidays, however, sometimes we just can’t help but worry about the increase of electricity costs that comes with our Christmas decorations. Huge electric bills can be a pain, and cut into the Hendrick's gin stash, but you don’t have to let it affect your holiday lighting plans, or buzz. With the invention of LED lights, people can now rest their worries about shouldering large electric bills.

All types of LED lights have been proven to use 33% less power as compared to traditional lights............

On the other hand, traditional lights also have its share of good points. If you are after the aesthetics, then you may still prefer the classic look that traditional Christmas lights offer.

LED lights can sometimes have harsh glares which can be a little hard to tolerate if used on small spaces such as inside the house. Traditional lights are also cheaper and their different colors are much more pleasing to the eyes. I myself will probably use my traditional lights as I use all red on my tree, you know, for the Amsterdam red light district tree!!!! I'm embracing my heritage! I have never seen all red light strands of LEDs. I also think as a personal preference, leds just don't have that "old nostalgia feel" and come across a little garish in color and brightness. Even though traditional lights have more advantage over this new type of lights in terms of aesthetics, manufacturers of LED lights are now coming up with ways to make their lights more pleasing to the eyes. So maybe some day. What do you guys thinks of LEDs,what do you use, I'm just being nosy! Tootles!

In hysterics, "red light district tree!" Here's me thinking I was being all innovative with my white roses but nop, you've won the prize!

Oh and I prefer the olde fashioned lights for their soft colour.

  2. Up until this year, I've always used traditional lights on my tree. But it's getting next to impossible to find replacement bulbs now. So I just switched over to LED lights -- bought 3 strings of multi-coloured ones for my tree. They look nice!

  3. Leds outside as I like to have the lights on all night. I like to think the paperkid enjoys the lights in the cold, dark hours.
Inside... this year we are looking for a new tree (allergies dictate a fake tree). We need a narrow tree now with so much dog taking up so much room. I'll be thinking about your points and seeing if a traditional light tree is even available.

I prefer the traditional lights. The LED lights belong outdoors.

I holeheartedly agree with you on the quality of aesthetics here... To date, LED lighting lacks the warmth of Traditional Lights, but can be enhanced by using ornamental diffusers. If buying new, I always look for energy efficiency -so long as it is pleasing to the eye, and the investment is returned in actual energy cost savings. For Outside Lighting - definitely LED! For inside, I will always favor ambiance (programmable timers are great if you are trying to manage energy consumption). Hmmm... Me thinks me just got nudged by The Ghost of Holiday Decorating!!! LOL

  7. While I guess it is good to use the LED'S I just can't bring myself to use them, the colors are too bright for me.

  8. The prices are still quite a bit higher, but are coming down. Some manufacturers are offering different options for LED the coverings, making it look more like a traditional bulb. But best of all there are different whites now available! No longer is the bright pure, read "blue", light the only option available. But yes I would agree the traditional do look more calming.

  9. Well you guessed it, I'm old fashioned and can not bring myself to use the LEDS. I like the softness of the traditional more.

  10. The biggest hang-up in our household was the "blue" harsh color of the clear light. A set or two was bought in the early days of LED lights, but was quickly discarded. Today that pure white is still the most popular type sold. But if you look for them, the "warm" lights are available at a few stores and online.

  11. Energy saving LED Christmas lights have been on the scene for several years, but only in the last few years have we even considered using them. We found these cover thingys to dull down the harsh brightness.

  12. Some of you make good points but using LEDS outside, that's where I have usually seen them used.

  13. When it comes to your power bill, LED's are the way to go. More and more of my clients are using them when I go to install their outdoor lights for them. I actually like the color of them better.

  14. I think the younger generation is just used to the LEDS. I like them better, but I love lots of vibrant color.
