DOWN BY THE SEASIDE

I must admit, the Mistress doesn't usually have my first vacation till June, but when the Professor asked me to go on a impromptu trip to Newport,  I checked with accountant, who gave me the green light and it was ships ahoy!!!! He thought me being a lover of architecture and interior design I would love to go, and was he ever right. The trip was spectacular and one of my favorite trips to date. The first day alone I could have just stayed a recluse in my room and not gone anywhere, but one knows I can't stay put for long. The hotel he booked was The Chanler at Cliff Walk....

A charming boutique hotel full of history and European flair, The Chanler at Cliff Walk is one of Newport’s most elegant mansions, and of all the great Newport Rhode Island hotels, only the Chanler is fortunate enough to be situated right on the breathtaking Newport Cliff Walk and the hotel is surrounded by lavish manicured gardens and breathtaking ocean views.  The hotel from what I understand has 20 guest rooms, each individually designed to evoke a different historical period and style. Set in an area renowned for its extravagant summer manors,  it’s no surprise the hotel exudes grandeur and glory through every detail. I tell you, the Mistress was ready to move right in and become a hotel squatter!!! Dining at the restaurant there, The Spiced Pear, is equally prestigious, with the emphasis on seasonal New England fare. They are also famous for their signature cock-a-tail, the Spiced Pear.

Our GLORIOUS room...LOVED the blue... this room was right up my alley.... I felt dirty doing the dirty in this bed.....

While talking to the point person to our room, Brant informed me of the history of this cliff side mansion which I'd been wondering. The Chanler is a legacy of the Newport Gilded Age. Built in 1865 as a summer home for New York Congressman John Winthrop Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward, it was the first mansion to be built on the famed Cliff Walk and has hosted numerous dignitaries including the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and President
Theodore Roosevelt. History is manifest in the hotel’s twenty rooms. Since then several businessmen have owned the hotel as a home till it finally became a hotel in 2000.

Most mornings we were up by 8:30 to 10.... had a very nice breakfast or brunch and then did a daily walk on the historic Cliff Walk.

Our table most mornings....so much detail... I could so get used to eating like this every day... And they must have known that Ranunculus is my favorite flower......

The stunningly elegant lobby....

The Bar in Spiced Pear....

The Chanler is a mix of casual elegance and opulent refinement. He also said the plan was to provide a unique experience in each of the rooms, ranging from contemporary New England casual to timeless European sophistication. Each of the 20 rooms in the mansion’s main building are decorated and named for an historical period based on the furniture design and architecture of that time. The rooms are extraordinarily exquisite with a myriad of historic furnishings, antiques, décor and fixtures. The hotel is a history lesson in itself, as some of the furniture from the original Chanler Museum is sprinkled throughout the mansion.Named to Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List in 2012, The Chanler was voted #4 Hotel in the U.S. and in the top 100 in the world by the magazine’s readers. And after this visit and our top notch service, I could see why. One day we even had in room spa services of massages and facials which were heaven!!!!

Anyone ready to go back with me and becoming a live in squatter?!?!? I get the bed!!!!

  25. Hi Maddie.

Thank you for sharing your trip; what an exquisite place to be pampered, to let the world roll off your shoulders.

I imagine, from your words and pictures, that the gardens and cliff walk are magnificent, the terrace splendid with sea sounds, the Spiced Pear a tantalizing wetness for the lips.

I wonder if they'd let me in wearing my mosquito suit.
