NEW YEARS DAY=MUMMERS!

Hope everyone one is having a great New Years Day!!!!

The dead arose here sometime around 12:30pm and got right into the swing of things. Of course, a regular visitor will tell you that a New Years Day is not complete without the day long, and into night, spectacle of the Mummers Parade!! Over 10.000 participants, and over 40 divisions, fancifully dressed in baubles, bangles, beads, sequins and plumes and feathers of all types, marched and played instruments through center city for the 124th Mummers Parade. The term Mummer comes from Germany and means, "to costume, pantomime or masquerade. The parade made up of mostly blue collar, straight males, along with some women and children, some of which are third generations in the parade, bring the sparkle to the nines, to rival any drag or Broadway show. The parade made up of comic, wench, fancy, fancies and string band divisions turned it out this year, and all bought distinctively Philly performances on the day which dawned fairly mild but then gave way to some gales. The parade itself has roots in Northen European, British and Africa American traditions. More than a century of Philadelphia New Year's Day tradition is steeped in sequins, theatrical performances and copious amount of spirits!!!! Our particular favorite string band performances this year were that of Duffy, Aqua, Avalon and Fralinger and Polish American String Bands.

And of course, the two other traditions....

A Good and Happy New Year!

We are surrounded by water, not in the house, thank goodness buton the roads and lanes. This morning it's -3 and snow is forecast from Saturday. Brrrrrr. Bring on spring!

  7. What a splendiferous parade. Mummering is a Christmas-time house-visiting tradition practiced in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ireland, Philadelphia, and parts of the United Kingdom (but round here). IIRC there is a reference to mummers in Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie.

  8. Oh, that roast looks delish!
I must say, the crotch bauble on the guy in the first Mummer photo is a very interesting choice!
We lazed about and did as little as possible.

Spectaculaire, le carnaval arrive à Philly :)
Les Mummers ont fait un super spectacle comme le carnaval à Nice et l’Escalade à Genève.
Et quel beau rôti ! :)

  11. All that, "the morning after the night before"??!! I didn't surface until after sundown.

London may have had a little event of its own - but not nearly as OTT. And it rained. Of course. Jx

    1. My advice is to stream it from Channel 69 each year. It's the only way I can see it now being out of the Philadelphia market. Even the rat bastards in Harrisburg won't air it.

  21. I just love all the tradition you keep alive! I have always wanted to go experience the parade some year again, but for now I'll watch it from the warmth of my home. William and I went to see it several years, many years ago, and it is incredible. Your dinner looks delicious! Is that rosemary I spy in there? Lovely post!

    1. Yes...and would you believe it was from the garden??? My rosemary in the garden is spectacular! I had no idea why the other herbs died back or need cut back, the rosemary still yields. Nothing like rosemary to accompany pork.

    2. Rosemary is tough - it can stand quite low temperatures, but it will not survive with "wet feet". As long as there's drainage, it keeps on giving. And it flowers in January/February in the UK! Jx

    3. I should have known Plant Professor Jon would know. I had no idea. I will have to see if our flowers or not. I have currently a multitude of stalks on it, and it added such flavor to the roast yesterday.

  23. Those are some fabulous costumes! We had a Mummers parade on the Saturday night prior to Halloween when we lived in Maryland but nothing that good looking. We attended while our kids were in public school and fled as soon as they had marched by with their school's band!

    Love,
    Janie
