Something's got into the punch.

  1. I wonder if Olivia was particularly nervous doing a dance routine with the great Gene Kelly?

  7. I agree with Anne Marie, Xanadu - ew! Couldn't get past the first ten minutes, and I love musicals in general and Gene Kelly in particular. I've read a few things about him in various biographies and memoirs (Yeah, I need a life)and it seems like he was a bit of a competitive douche. Taints him just a little, but his dancing was fabulous!
For some reason, even Olivia's speaking voice has always gotten on my last nerve. Boy, aint I little Sally Sunshine this morning?

    1. I can't explain why I liked the movie. I gated it at first, like Showgirls. But over time, it was so bad I enjoyed the cheesy aspect. And never knew that about Gene Kelly. My favorite dancers were Fred Astaire and Ann Miller. That woman could MMMMMMMMOVE!

    2. She sure could move even when her hair didn't! One of the best tap dancers ever along with Eleanor Powell. Fred Astaire. I was in my late teens before I started to appreciate him. Such elegance and grace, even when walking! Now my favorite female dancer was (cliché alert!) Cyd Charisse. Simply gorgeous.
By the way, MM, you don't have to explain why you like anything. Everybody gets their cheese from different sources. Mine is the original Red Dawn, go figure. I sometimes think that there is a 12 year old boy in this 61 year old lady.

  8. Gene Kelly's last movie.....and he was still divine. That was a sweet scene from an otherwise campy cult classic.

  11. For some reason, I like Olivia Newton John better in bad girl roles--like Sandy at the end of Grease or the aerobics instructor from her Physical video. I think her squeaky clean persona is just so plastic and unexciting to me. I would need to drink some spiked punch just to be near her squeaky clean trilling and not cringe.

As for her dancing, it's all right. But she's no Elizabeth Berkely...then again, no one can ever stand next to Nomi Malone...without getting pushed down the stairs.

  12. It's a nice scene, a kind of swan song for the great Kelly. Olivia is certainly not in his league as a dancer, but neither does she embarrass herself, and I like her singing a '40s type tune.
