ReplyDeleteI actually met Don on a flight to San Diego in 1979. New Job in my 5th week on board and off to a national sales meeting. This was right after the DC10 crash in Chicago and everyone had changed flights to fly any other plane but that one. As I walked down to get on the plane I realized that it was a DC10. I had to go on with the flight.
There were only 18 people scheduled on the flight so the flight attendants moved most everyone to 1st class. I'm sitting there minding my own business when Don entered the plane. I guess I was staring at him open mouthed and - he looked right at me and loudly said "whats a matter pork chop - never seen a balding jew before" and then began to laugh and laugh. He pulverized me for at least 30 minutes all in good fun. I still have his autograph. He is missed already.
What a great story!

ReplyDeleteSurprised right? I met Don Rickles after his Lounge act in Lake Tahoe many years ago. He had grown up with a close family friend who was at the table with us. Rickles was charming, soft spoken and sincere. This was the opposite of his on stage persona. What a show he put on.
Funniest, man , ever.
