The long regaled Lady Bunny , has been my all time, hands down, favorite queen!!!! Friends of mine will tell you, I can talk about her for hours, and I hope your never find yourself with me at one of her shows.....I get REAL lit!!!! She is a bad influence, what can I tell you!!!! I know she may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I love her fowl ,dirty mouth, her political incorrectness, her sharp tongue, and her comedy of smart wisecracks is tons of hilarity. Since coming out, she was really the first queen I ever really saw that impressed me, that retro fashion, that voice, and that huge hair, which I think inspired me when I did my big hair. Go big or go home I say. We caught her show in New York last month, Hot Mess with Bianca Del Rio, which was completely gut busting. As with all shows, we got to talk some and have drinks of course, with her. All this time I wondered how she ever came up with the name Lady Bunny. I had never thought to ask before, or if I did I was too drunk to remember, and this is what she said.....
" Well you know, there was a comic book called “Millie the Model” that was fairly popular about two models. Then there was an off-shoot of that called “Bunny ‘Queen of the In-Crowd’. She wore psychedelic mini dresses and had blonde hair. Of course, this was the late sixties so it was quite like my look now but thin because she was a model. I did collect those comic books so that could have been it. There wasn’t any rational process. ‘Lady’ is a name that a lot of drag queens down south give themselves to try to seem as though they are classier. So I was kind of making fun of that tradition to seem grander than you are because when I got my start with RuPaul in Atlanta when we were dirt poor. Our outfits were so atrocious. And don’t even get me started on our make-up skills. The idea of using ‘Lady’ anything was a joke in itself. We were the most busted boogers on the block (cough cough) of the city perhaps."
And then there was a rare treat where I saw a picture of her out of drag. But that will be kept a secret. And if your not familiar with Bun Bun, here's a quick 3 min clip of her last show, Clowns Syndrome at La Escuelita, which I also saw. I think I wet myself that time. Love her added touch with celebrity endorsements.
LOVE THIS POST!! I would love to meet her sometime, she is just epic. Bunny SO NEEDS a place on Drag Race somewhere, anywhere.
ReplyDeletewell they could always replace*cough *cough...santino.
DeleteGreat choice. I wish she would come to Philly more. She seems to hit New Hope, but not here in town. She is great ,and was the only saving grace to watching the painful disaster of Drag U.
ReplyDeleteI don't have LOGO anymore, but I dearly miss Lady Bunny. She is sooooo hilarious!
ReplyDeletetoo have always adored Bunny, she is so hilarious and inimitable, and then there's that hair!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThere is just not enough Lady Bunny to go around. When we saw that show, I still couldn't believe all the drinking you guys were doing.
ReplyDeleteI never knew she was skinny. It must have been the huge hair that made me think she was big.
ReplyDeleteBun Bun is still the best drag, I swear. And these days her legs are to dieeeee for. Seriously, I would kill for those legs. Bitch should have them insured. And those wigs!!!!!!

ReplyDeletewhenever i see her tv,
ReplyDeleteshe doesn't seem nearly filthy enough!
I think she is beautiful. I have never been to one of her performances, but now I WANT to go!
ReplyDeleteDear, upon meeting, if you did drag, you would be Lady Bunny. And when I hear she back this way, I'll let you now so we can go!!!!! Beware! You been warned!
DeleteI absolutely adore her!!!! I have searched high and low and have never found a picture of her put of drag. You have any idea why no??? So you know what she looks like?
ReplyDeleteCooper, Bunny has been around for years and her style and trademark has gotten so well known that I feel she sort of guards it. With some queens, when their spotted as a man it in a way shatters the image. A while back alot of queens would not be photographed as a man like coco Peru, miss Richfield and Varla jean until recently. When I did drag , only my inner sanctum knew it was me, but people I didn't know well had no idea who really was the Mistress Borghese. When I met my second ex, I was in drag. Three weeks later I met him as me, and he had no idea it was me!!!! Bunny and Miss Richfield and Miriam Webster are the three that will only photograph in character. Its actually not uncommon for old school queens
DeleteAnyone who can stand up under the weight of that hair, and still be riotously funny, is indeed a Grande Dame!
ReplyDeleteFowl or not, I think she is just fabulous! She does make one howl.......
