Dilapidated Beauty

I came across these just today- photos of crumbling architecture, which is apparently a hot topic lately. French lensmen Yves Marchland and Roman Meffre shot these images of buildings that were meant to last. Their book titled The Ruins of Detroit features tons of these once grand old, majestic palaces, dust covered living rooms, decaying hotel ballrooms and offices, chronicling the demise of the once-thriving Motor City. I just love architecture and photography, and these imagines are just haunting! Even through the decay you can still see the elegance that was once there. And who can't help day dream of the high society that went and par took of the culture in these places. If you imagine reeeeeeal hard you can almost hear the voices and music.

It makes you wonder how long these places will be around yet, and if the city will ever turn around. To see more of Yves Marchand and Roman Meffre great work you can visit their website.

  1. Went to Detroit to visit Mark, and it was hard to drive by some of the abandoned buildings and blocks.

  5. The decay of the Auto industry is like rust to metal on the historic buildings of that once great city.

  6. AMAZING. I get chills thinking of these places and of how they would have been in the 50′s & 60′s. The memories of happy people, blissfully and ignorantly walking into these rooms each day, and now these buildings are in ruins. I know everything must come to an end but it’s like looking at the Titanic. Forever frozen, locked like a capsule in time. Amazing, good work.

  8. Beautiful and sad in equal measure.
Just this week, there was a documentary on the decline of Detroit on the local station here called "Requiem for Detroit", very depressing. The picture are pretty stinning though.

  11. So sad... there are so many GORGEOUS theatres around this country that lay in decay... if they've not already been razed!
