MEMORIAL DAY

Don't let the current regimen ruin the holiday for those who the day is truly meant to be for. Today we should come together as a nation to honor and remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect country and freedoms.

MEMORIAL DAY

It's been a wonderful four-day weekend for the Memorial Day weekend, or as my grandmother still called Decoration Day. Weather wise, it's been beautiful and feels wonderful. We have some family coming today for a little cook out and some cocktails later. In addition to that Mistress Maddie's #1 Fan is also here. We took an impromptu day trip, with the Capital Street Duo to a charming little town in Maryland yesterday, cool vibe, artsy crowd, and diverse and friendly people.  More on that later. I also took a visit Friday over to the Rolling Green Cemetery to pay respects to my father who passed back in 2001. We was in the US Army. I had never been since I was living away for years, so it's taken 23 years to get there to see it. I had never seen the memorial grave marker. They don't do tombstones for it makes the lawn maintenance easier and less vandalism. You'd be surprised at the stories of more and more cemeteries being vandalized. It was amazing to see all the flags and just how many service people were at rest here. The cemetery themselves put the flags up for every veteran. A nice gesture, I think. It's nice to say thank you to a veteran or just pay your respects for the freedoms and liberties we have today.

A Happy Memorial Day to all! 

My good friends Doug and Jamie, who did the lovely nude artwork I sat for a couple years ago, called with a offer to spend the holiday in Rehoboth Beach. I hadn't seen them since their move right before the pandemic hit to from New Hope to Rehoboth. A great chance to catch up and have fun. Never have I welcomed in Memorial at the beach...and it was great to get back to Rehoboth Beach after a nearly three-year hiatus. What a welcoming home and I had never seen honeysuckle on the beach before. Right behind their home. Sea mist and honeysuckle. And the sand under one's feet. What a way to welcome in summer! And let's remember to keep those pass veterans and current serviceman and ladies in our minds all the year through. Hope your all having a nice weekend....back on Wednesday.

MEMORIAL MOOD

Memorial Day for some conjures images of hamburger and hot dogs, swimming pools and the unofficial start of summertime. But the last Monday in May serves, most importantly, as a time to honor those who have died while fighting in the US Armed Forces, the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and the Air Force. It's a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually began as Decoration Day, following the Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. My father served in the army, and we went this morning to lay a flag and small wreath and have placed out our flags. We must not take for granted the services these people did for all of us, and we need to take better care of our veterans. Later we will be having my uncle who also served, and his son over for a small cook-out. If you served or are serving, THANK YOU for all your service protecting us and keeping our freedoms.

I was absolutely in awe when I first saw images by Arthur Mole when he created them by arranging thousands of people, many of them from our military troops into American patriotic symbols, that are viewed from a bird's eye perspective.

Happy Memorial Day to you All

I can remember my dearly departed grandmother always referring to this day as Decoration Day.  The practice of decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers is an ancient custom. Soldiers’ graves were decorated in the U.S. before, during, and after the Civil War. In 1868, General John A. Logan proclaimed a national and annual observation of “Decoration Day” on May 30. The holiday was changed to include all service men and women after World War I. It became known as Memorial Day over Decoration Day after World War II. My father and both grandfathers were all in the service, and along with them,  let's keep all the service men and woman in our memories, not to mention out new hero's and service people in these new times.

And a bear sighting near Fanny Chapman Park in Doylestown! Very close by...less then 10 minutes. No doubt looking for the Casa du Borghese. Good thing I have about five jars of honey.

IT'S THE WEEKND!

Weekend what is that?!?

 None the less, the Mistress got ready for the weekend. My good friend invited me and my good friend and sister Mamie, aka, David Dust, for a weekend of glamping up in the Pocono's. It will be just the three of us, and thankfully none of us has been out around others,  but will still be safe with precautions. This is bound to be one of my looks for the weekend. It will be one of the lowest key weekends at the Woods,  with most of it's amenities closed. We plan to just sit on the site , drink, regale stories, and enjoy a campfire or two. Nothing like the smell of a campfire. I left Friday morning and I'll be returning Sunday.

And I heard a bear was spotted!!!!!!!

THE MEMORIAL

Any of my gentle readers will tell you I just love me some summer. and the Memorial Day holiday is generally the kick off of summer, even though it's not offical till June 21st. While I may not be happy and filled with such distain for the government, we can still be patriotic for the country itself, and not for the government till they deserve it.  We take time to honor those who defended and fought for the country and didn't return. My fair hamlet this year made lamp post banners for the 26 veterans who lived in town, with their picture on them, and the war they fought. I thought it was pretty cool and touching.

For many others myself included, it's a time to relax a bit with family or friends to enjoy a good old fashioned cook out or picnics, and get out of doors. I have a four day weekend, with one personal day on Wednesday. The Lad is here for the duration and a reader of my blog, the very sweet Timmy from Ohio, is expected this afternoon. We have not met yet, but he will be with us tomorrow for the Raven's pool show with myself and Miriam Webster, followed by all the sights in New Hope, followed by a day in NYC to view the CAMP exhibit. Debauchery all around. I'm guessing?

 Memorial Day isn’t just an excuse to take a long weekend and loaf around eating grilled meats—although those are certainly among the reasons to love the holiday.So before you head out to your barbecues and pool parties, here are some facts I learned about Memorial Day I didn't know.

It was originally called Decoration Day. My grandmothers always called it that.To honor the deceased, soldiers would decorate graves of their fallen comrades with flowers, flags and wreaths. Hence Decoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1860s, the holiday wouldn’t legally become Memorial Day until 1967.

It wasn't always observed on the last Monday of the month.After the Civil War, General John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a holiday commemorating fallen soldiers to be observed every May 30. But due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday of May to ensure long weekends.

It is legally required to observe a national moment of silence. In December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to remember and honor the fallen. But this doesn’t appear to be common knowledge, or if it is, by 3 p.m. most people seem to be too deep into a gin infused hot dog-induced food coma to officially observe the moment.

At least 36 million citizens will travel at least 50 miles to be at beaches or gathering this holiday.

In 1966 Congress unanimously passed a resolution to officially recognize Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day. However, it remains a contentious debate, with other towns, like Boalsburg, Pa., claiming the title of “Birthplace of Memorial Day” as well.

James A Garfield once delivered a lengthy speech at the first Memorial Day, of course then it was still called Decoration Day, and at the time, Garfield was a Civil War General and Republican Congressman, not yet a President. On May 30, 1868, he addressed the several thousand people gathered at Arlington National Cemetery. “If silence is ever golden,” Garfield said, “it must be beside the graves of 15,000 men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem the music of which can never be sung.”

Of course my faithful readers will know that Memorial Day also hails one of my favorite things...Time to wear WHITE DENIM!!!! I loves me some white denims!
