THE DUCHESS

Whilst in Baltimore this weekend we made a quick pitstop on the way back home to say hi to some boys I know who own a delicious home accents shop, which hit the wallet hard I might add, and we dined at a stop I enjoy, The Duchess. You may be thinking it's Duchess Deedles's house. I wish! But she is on the other coastline! But every time I see this place I think of our Duchess Deedles and think the place is named in her honor. The Duchess is a corner pub, but don't expect shepherd's pie or Yorkshire pudding here. Rather than serve traditional pub grub, the Duchesss  is the ultimate hangout in Hampden brought to life by owner Tony Foreman and Chef KiKo Fejarang, with a sometime weekly rotating menu I hear. With a vibe inspired by the friendly spirit of a English pub, it's a place where great food and good time come together for sure. The food and even drinks infuse the Chef's vibrant Chamorro heritage and rich with culinary roots from Western Pacific, Guam. She has a melting pot of taste on the menu from Filipino, Japanese, Korean and even some Spanish cuisine. It's definitely a friendly place, with welcoming staff and attentiveness...the place is a true original fitting right into this quirky town of Hampden. I have always loved the vibe of the place. By time we left from an early dinner, the place was packed and we caught just enough of a live performance from a singer on stage, which I hear is a new weekly addition. And we made pigs of ourselves!

I already can't wait to go back!

I came across this video from a year ago of the place for more info. I just adore Chef. And yes, she does a lot with Spam! And it was delish!

Are you gonna show us what you bought at the boys’ shop?

    1. Oh maybe I'll share that one day. I have featured their shop on my blog before. I think in the tags under the post if you click on Hampden, it will take you to the post from that tag

  2. The place is gorgeous and the food looks yummy! Then, I watched the video. You lost me at Spam, honey! Saying it's just salty pork doesn't make it more appetizing. Oh, and for the record, my house would be more like a pre-hoarder's episode inhabited by two hopeless clutter bugs. So, when's your next vacation?

    1. Don't you knock spam Duchess Deedles!!! I've only ever had ham salad spread made with it which was my grandmother's recipe and that was delicious in the summer. But when I saw spam and a lot of dishes here I thought oh geez. But I'll tell you what? Had I not sold with Spam I would not have known it was delicious.

My next vacation will be coming up at the end of June. It looks like I'm going to be hit or miss all summer.

  3. Altogether, I spent about 8 months of my life in the Philippines and the food is truly scrumptious.

    1. Tommy, this is the kind of place that you could definitely eat once a week. The foods that good and the people or friendly and welcoming.

  5. This looks SO good and I LOVE the chef/co-owner. But SPAM!!! Still, if we lived nearby, we’d be there a few times a week. I really had hoped to see Deedles.

    1. Having Duchess Deedles there would have been over the top good time. And I can't knock the spam, what the chef did with it was amazing. On those french fries I had was actually thinly sliced curled spam. They were called typhoon fries... between the spam and the sauce on them they were amazing. And I agree if I lived there I would be there a couple times a week.

  7. The place looks lovely. However, although I have nothing against the stuff, and we do eat it occasionally, over here two tins of Spam cost £3.95 ($5.30) in Iceland supermarket. They're charging $11 (£8.20) for a slice, in BBQ sauce, on rice. I'd hesitate at that point... Jx

    1. Holy moly I wonder why it's so expensive? It's very inexpensive here. My grandmother used to make the best ham spread sandwiches with that. In the summer they're quite refreshing.

    2. That's what I'm saying - The Duchess "pub" is making a huge mark-up on a very cheap ingredient! If Spam costs £2 for a 200g tin, and they're serving you a 20g slice on rice (which costs pennies) for more than £8, then basically they're making around a 400% mark-up (less overheads)... I know that seems like nit-picking, considering the ambience, the service and so on, but I would still have a sharp intake of breath, regardless. Jx

    1. It seems like when anything comes in that town it's there for quite some time. And if the chef keeps up what she's doing I'm sure they'll be there a long time. It's one of my most memorable meals I've had out in some time.

  11. I love Hampden and was there the opening weekend when The Duchess opened and have been several times since. I wonder do they still have a cocktail served in a spam tin??? They used too. I kid you not. Blue Bird is my other favorite place.

    1. I have no idea if they do or not, I personally did not see any drinks served in a Spam tin! Of course I did have a few drinks. And I might have thought I was seeing stuff.

  14. The Duchess looks too posh to be a pub; it certainly doesn't look like any pub I've been in.
