We always hear of our brave trans brothers and sisters of yore, and how trailblazing they were and what they did to get where they were. But what of the current trailblazers? Amanda Lepore for me is definitely a trailblazer, and one it seems I have seen many times over the years and into the carnation she is now. No way could you go out in NYC clubbing in the late 80's and 90's and beyond and not seen or met Amanda Lepore. You would not forget her eye-popping looks and style. To me she was brave. She made and set her mind to be who she wanted and no denying she forged her own signature style. Growing up in suburban NJ during the 70's while often being bullied at school for being different, Amanda left home, and at 17 she used a legal loophole to marry a male bookstore owner who helped her get and pay for her early gender-affirming surgeries. However, the relationship, was unhappy and turned abusive, as her husband wanted to keep her locked away. Over time she would stash grocery money to escape and eventually did and move to NYC. By the early 90's she was swiftly embraced by the city's most out there nightlife and fashion scenes. She freaked out America on the talk show circuit when many trans would not even still come out in the light so to speak. Proving she is not just a Warholian embodiment of famous for being famous, hard-grafting Amanda started getting paid to just show up at clubs and parties, and appeared in the music videos of other artist, while breaking into a spokes model position with MAC and the Heatherettes, not to mention became a huge muse for David Lachapple. It was soon after her appearance with surgical enhancements would eventually morph into a more extreme vision of an old Hollywood, high glamour prototype. And a body akin to a work of art. But it works.
That is all to say, Amanda is such a fabulous one -off.

Very reminiscent of many a Hollywood sex symbol over the years from Veronica Lake to Mae West, from Marilyn Monroe to Lady Gaga.
ReplyDeleteHer cabaret shows are pretty fun....with a touch of burlesque.
DeleteMr Gnome (poor chap) could do with making notes from this lady.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, what a stunner!
ReplyDeleteOh my God I love this post. When William and I used to Club ...yes ,even with our younger gay friends, we ran into Amanda a few times. I feel like she is not given credit enough for being a brave member of the LGBT because of her exaggerated appearance. But she's braver and has more strength than I. I don't think I ever could have left home like she did with hardly anything to my name. To see how she's forged herself and is so recognizable is amazing. And she was even very visible at a time when many trans like you say we're not out in the light.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite amazing how she foraged her life and never hid...and right right after those brass balls.... I mean imagine being paid to just show up at places! Her autobiography is an excellent read by the way.
DeleteAmanda Lepore is definitely a profile of courage and strength of character! I'm not a fan of huge boob jobs and plastic surgery a la Dolly Parton because it just reinforces objectification of women, but it's her body to do with as she wants.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment. I usually don't like much plastic surgery either. Things is...we don't know really what she look like ever as a man, Amanda has always been Amanda. But when other people get plastic surgery done for example Joan Rivers, by the time she was done she looked nothing like she did originally. I thought she was actually absolutely stunning before any surgeries. I don't think people see how they're ruining their appearance. When you don't look like yourself anymore I think you've gone too far. But in Amanda's case she went from a man to a woman and is very highly guarded on her male pictures. So to me Amanda has always been a fabulous and stunning one-off!
DeleteIt's nobody's business to know what Amanda looked like as a man except Amanda and her right to privacy trumps everything else. I completely agree with you about Joan Rivers. Without a doubt, plastic surgery has helped millions of people. It's just rather sad that some men and women become so obsessed with staying "youthful" that plastic surgery becomes an addiction like anything else.
DeleteFabulous and her Skin is flawless, as is the Makeup. Yes, it works and she pulls it off, her story is inspirational. I'm glad Life ended up working out for her in Positive ways as well, it was definitely a tough row to hoe during any Era, but especially the one she came from back then.
ReplyDeleteShe does all her own looks and make up...unlike a well known drag we all know. LOL! Miss Thang is a survivor!
DeleteShe’s a mix for me. She certainly has lived life on her own terms and thrived. Her body transformation does objectify women but then I suppose that can be said about many drag queens not as extreme. And what would the world be without them?
ReplyDeleteShe said her inspiration has always been scarlet of old Hollywood.
DeleteAs Bohemian stated, Amanda Lapore is Awesomely FABULOUS.
ReplyDeleteEven as a young gayling, I thought she was fabulous and was my first trans person I ever saw and it be honest didn't even know then at that age a thing existed. I was enthralled with her on the talk shows and my parents wanted me to turn the tv off.
ReplyDeleteI can recall being at my friends house when I think it was Jenny Jones or one of them... had on club kids and his mother made us turn it off. I think that was when I was smitten with Amanda. I also knew then I need to find out more about her.
DeleteYAS HENNY!!!! She is indeed a brave soul and trailblazer!!! Us club kids accepted her quick, because not even the G&L IN LGBT knew what to do with her...trans never seem to find the right home... but Amanda did and that bitch thrived honey. And she'd do just about anything for anybody.
ReplyDeleteSadly I think you're right and I also think it was very common for Trans people to find any welcome spot anywhere. Hell even a few years ago I was friends with a trans woman and we were at The Raven in the summer. There was some gay guys then making some cracks about her, so I told him to shut the f***up.
DeleteI have always thought she was fabulous and brave! And let's face it, NO ONE wear pasties as good as Amanda Lepore!!!
ReplyDeleteSnatched for the gods!
ReplyDeleteIcon and legend.
Those are some industrial-strenght pasties she's wearing.
ReplyDeleteShe has those specially made by a jeweler would you believe.
DeleteIf there was ever a self-made woman, that's Amanda Lepore.
ReplyDeleteShe's fascinating and interesting in that she's Amanda and that's it. She does not wait for people to take her or leave her. She's got shit to DO.
Love her.
And now I'm looking for her autobiography in my Public Library. Doll Parts, huh?
XOXO
If you're interested in Reading it, I would be more than happy to send you my copy. A friend of mine is currently reading it and will be done shortly with it. It's an excellent read.
DeleteAnyone that's done what she did with her life during a time when it was taboo and not understood to be trans is Brave. And we adore her. When one of her shoes came to the clubs here we went and saw it and she is so campy and she is definitely not shy.
