"YOU EITHER KNOW FASHION OR YOU DON'T"

Anna Wintour, is the English editor-in-chief of American Vogue, a position she has held since 1988. In 2013, she became artistic director for Condé Nast, Vogue's publisher. With her trademark pageboy bob haircut and dark sunglasses for the last 25 years, Wintour has become one of the most important figures in much of the fashion world, widely praised for her eye for fashion trends and her support for younger designers. Her reportedly aloof and demanding personality has earned her the nickname "Nuclear Wintour" But to me, she has always fascinated me, and I have always respected her, and her talent in fashion. I dare say she has even been a role model at times for me when it comes to my work ethic. I would like to extended a very

Happy Birthday to Ms. Anna Wintour on her birthday!!!!
"If you can't be better than your competition just dress better."

"Create your own style. Let it be unique for yourself, and yet identifiable for others."

"I usually wear the same dress 20 times. Recycle. It's totally ok. I even recommend it."

"Even if I'm completely unsure, I'll pretend I know exactly what I'm talking about and make a decision."

"Why fit in when you were born to stand out"

" A dress makes no sense unless it inspires men to want to take it off"

"I think everyone should get sacked at least once. It was definitely a good thing for what it taught me."

"The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying. This is America, not Saudi Arabia."

In a sea of women's glossies that purport to be about fashion,  but publish earnest articles chronicling the author's quest for self-actualization, Vogue stands apart. The voluminous fashion pages are arty, original, and sophisticated, shot by talented photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Irving Penn, and Steven Meisel. Vogue is my main bible when it comes to inspiring me on the job. Let's just hope whoever ordered her birthday nosh gets it right today!!!!

So Happy Birthday to you Anna Wintour!!! As  British Jon would say, She's the Casa du Borghese Patron Saint!

  2. Happy Birthday!!!! I love her too! I work in the fashion industry and I have the utmost respect for her. I think people who make snide cracks about her are just intimidated of her, which upon meeting her on several occasions, she can be. But I have never seen her completely nasty.

  3. ;-) my dad's company made the paper for vogue. (early 80s) and he, and we, got the magazine before the public so they could inspect how the printing went on the paper. even though my mom and i were (and are still not) all that fashion centered (like that which they showed in the magazines) it was still fun to get it early

  4. I've heard she hasn't eaten since 1988, so I sent long a plastic bag filled with cake-icing-scented air.
    I hope she likes it.

  5. I must admit to loving her personal style. She's quite fascinating and something. A dinner with her would be most interesting. Anna is the last of the great fashion editor in chief for sure. Lovely post Mistress!

    1. I agree. She'd be on my list of 10 people to invite for a dinner party.

  6. My wardrobe would make her run shrieking from the room. Probably to get a gun, lol!

  7. Long live Anna Wintour! Even is she is icy. No one could do the job she is doing now. Sales of vogue are up in a declining magazine market.

  8. I can't help but wonder if she got her personality from her father, who in London was the publisher of a newspaper. His nickname was Chilly Willy. I also think it neat she started out modeling on the British scene....and now look where she is. That's having a goal and determination. Happy Birthday Ms. Nuclear!

  9. "Even if I'm completely unsure, I'll pretend I know exactly what I'm talking about and make a decision." A Patron Saint indeed.

And, as my little contribution to the celebration - remember this?

  14. English women can certainly be uppity and sarcastic, but I'm the kind of ape who finds that amusing. I hope you get to meet Ms Wintour and I bet she'll like you!

    1. I find that amusing too. While I have never formally met her, I have seen her in our store on three occasions, and have said good morning, where I got a low rumble. I was later asked "Are you nuts? No talks to her unless she speaks first." I said she is a person like everyone else. The sales people say she is actually very polite and talkive......granted about fashion.

  15. I have to say, I actually think its funny she puts people on edge. And that she is bitchy. You know if we were discussing a man, it would be a different story. Many happy returns to her.

  16. Her professional side may be cold or even brutal, but it belongs in the world she works in. I'm not one for fashion but I did enjoy the book and movie September Issue, and it inspired me to look into the life of Anna. Not what I expected. Of course, I don't work for her so it's easy for me to say that.

  17. Love the quotes you put into the post. She's amazingly ambitious and professional, let's give her that. Pity, though, that she's in an industry that thrives by making women feel like they need to buy useless, pretty items just to feel adequate. I do love her style though.

  18. Thank you for a wonderful post for a classy woman. I don't get why people think she's a bitch. I think she's totally awesome! Yes, her comments might sometimes come us rude, but they are her perspectives, and sometimes, she does have a point. What's the problem with demanding employees to dress fashionably? It's equivalent to requiring employees to dress in suits and ties to work in an office. If we didn't have inspiration from the likes of her, models, ads and magazines like this, this country would be filled with nothing but sneaker wearing people in nothing but jeans and sweats 24/7. It's sometimes appalling now how people step outside their door. Besides, bitches get things DONE! Look at Vogue!

  19. She seems like an elitist to me. I am not such a fan of her, but admire her accomplishment nonetheless

  20. I'm not much of a fashionista... Jeans, tshirts, sneakers most of the time. But, when I need to "dress" - it's Kenneth Cole all the way. It made me the hit of the party this past year by wearing black jeans, a different KC tshirt each morning and afternoon, with black jacket. To steal a line from one of my buddy's books: "Kenneth knows how to dress a man!"
    Happy birthday, Anna!
