This week we have a creature I have always been infatuated with and yet another one of those queens who keeps us guessing as to what makes a drag queen. Lorena Maas was born a boy, but now is a woman, who just happens to do drag and does it damn well. She claims that Lady Gaga was her hero. Loena says that her music and message always inspired her, with Gaga's word of "always fight for someone" and that's what opened Loena's eyes. At 21 Loena underwent her gender surgery, but the stress of the operation and the high pressure of her education took their toll. That was at odds with the expectation of her surroundings, with the operation compete, that would surely comfort her. But for her, the lengthy and painful rehabilitation period proved to be severe. She felt doubt... and displeasure, and that proved to be a difficulty to discuss, even in the trans community, as it's a very taboo thing on admitting that you are not happy after the transition. It was finally in the drag community she found her footing. She had been in the world of drag for some time, even before the transition. The queens taught her how to make her body look more feminine and picking the right clothes, and that helped with the gender dysphoria. Loena proves that the great thing about drag is there are no rules attached to gender....but so many wonderful performers of every kind in the field.
Her very first drag performance was during a show with Trixie Mattel. She was asked to dance on stage. She began to take off her clothes in a typical burlesque way and if felt to her like a political act of resistance, showing she may not be the body of a typical female, but she was there showing how beautiful her body was. and how proud she was of it...so after that, she decided that burlesque acts set to avant garde costumes, and contemporary music would be her schtick ...and within a week was getting three bookings a week. Since then she has become one of the most popular of Dutch queens, runs in circles with the likes of Envy Peru and Abby OMG , has a weekly show, was Amsterdam's Pride ambassador one year and proves she is a drag princess. I think it's very important to show our love and support for these performers. Loena, the queen with bright hair and brighter future. And that sickening wardrobe.
