I would file this under my usual feature, Stop the Car, I Smell an Ignorant Bitch, because these people and the topic are far from ignorant bitches. But it is alarming and shows just what our trans brother and sisters must go through. The first is the great bathroom debate, which I'm so sick of hearing about. If a person identifies as the sex they are and is passible, I see no harm or need for hysteria to them using the bathroom of choice, and people need to lighten up for Pete's sake. Besides that, most bathrooms have individual stalls these days, not to mention, just make the bathrooms with locks on the doors or put in a third unisex room. I saw this clip of a trans man from Laverne Cox's Insta, explaining how nuts the right-wing plans to keep trans folk out of bathrooms which don't match their birth sex. No one who sees Nikson, with his beard and male pattern baldness in a men's room is going to notice anything different. Same with a trans woman who looks pretty much like a woman...I have a few trans women friends and they are gorgeous...one would never know and they blend right in. But Nikson gives a passionate speech and argument how something so simple has become a huge mole hill of a hot button topic. I still say that implementing single occupancy bathrooms is a solution which would solve everything, but we shouldn't have to do that. I could care less who's in the bathroom when I'm in there as long as you wash your hands!

TRANS AWARENESS
Then another page I follow of trans activists Lelaina Faye recently analyzed Pete Buttigieg's approach to LGBT rights, specifically a trans question asked during a town hall by a lady in the crowd, asking if he could solve the trans problem in her question what he would do. Mind you I have, and will always love Pete, and he is a great and caring person, well-meaning and mannered and very intelligent. I'd still vote for him, but I agree here with Lelaina, and I'm glad she dug into Pete's candidate style answer. While I love him, he, being a member of the LGBTQ should be able to answer this simple question: What would you do?" That was the bar and I feel he slithered under it. It does send me a red flag. Mind you, I'm not trans, but we are all one community. This should be a no brainer to answer. It does shock me that he didn't give a clear answer, and it reminded me of too many to mention politicians who refuse to have a clear answer, and take a firm stand on something.
Don't worry Pete, I still love and adore you but try a bit harder next time at the bat...our trans brothers and sisters need you....and your still more Presidential than Biden, Harris, and Trump combined.

Yes, Buttigieg should not have dodged and weaved.
ReplyDeletePete needs to have a real answer in the future, but expressing empathy is a lot better than what we get from the felon and his buddies. As far as bathrooms are concerned, when I need to pee, I don't care who's in the next stall. I just wish US stores/restaurants would start building bathrooms with real doors that show occupied or not instead of those stupid stall doors that don't stay closed half the time and put everyone on display.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I think once in he would be a ally for the trans more then any other. I would still vote for him, but I still don't think he would win the seat. I wonder if he also thinks he doesn't have a chance? I still say he'd be a great President. Those damn stall doors!!!!!
DeleteI think Pete would be a great president. He'd have to be careful about what he says to get elected, like when Barack Obama said marriage was between a man and a woman. I don't know if Americans will elect a gay president when they won't elect a woman, but Hillary won the popular vote.
DeleteLike you I like him mostly, but it's one beef I have with just about every politician. Just answer the damn question your asked and take a stand. He really answered the question about trans people being denied passports by saying the best people can do is rely on their family and loved ones. That's great if the family loves and accepts you but how is this helping their daily lives with every tasks? I didn't realize my family can issue passports, who knew?
ReplyDeleteBoth issues are sad. And yes...the easiest thing to do about the bathroom situations is just have individual bathrooms with locks.
ReplyDeleteAnd I too was very surprise Pete could answer that question what he'd do if he could. Telling that "one of our own" can't answer a simple and direct question like this.
Still waiting to hear of a Dem candidate with an actual platform to reverse/undo the damage being done currently... The only person that has had one can't run for the highest office, but it would be nice if the democrats took some notes from Zohran Mamdani. He's the only Democrat in my book with anything close to a winning strategy, which seems, ironically, completely foreign to leadership like Sen Schumer & Rep Jeffries, (who basically would not endosre him) let alone the rest. Both parties need to be gutted and reset if you ask me.
Omg his response was literally for her to just be there for those people???? I have to give a respectful eyeroll to him on this one.
ReplyDeleteAnd on the bathroom issue....not to sound insulting henny, but the solution would truly be to leave trans folk alone and politicians focus on real genuine issues.
When people get into others people's business it is always a bed thing. Let people just be people.
DeleteIt's so hard to have and keep faith in any public official anymore I swear. But at least we know Pete is a good hearted and well intentioning man.
ReplyDeleteAnd Nikson did an amazing job explaining his story. He couldn’t have explained the situation any better. My cousin is trans and I’m scared for him every day. Not only does Idaho fear trans people, they also have banned the Pride Flag. It’s a $2000 a day fine for flying one. House Bill 561 allows fines for cities that violate last year’s flag ban law, which lacked an enforcement mechanism. The fines are $2,000 daily, per offending flag. The Republican supermajority-controlled Legislature widely passed the bill sadly.
Mistress....I know like me you miss the good ole days of partying in NYC and Philly in clubs like the Limelight, Club USA, Webster Hall and Shampoo and Woodys in Philly etc… where everyone used the bathroom together, with ZERO issues…..Simply because you just had to “pee or do a line". Hey it was what we did then. I swear EVERYTHING has to be an issue now or made difficult.
ReplyDeleteYes girlllll, those were the days! The men's room at Shampoo was like a social happy hour, and a bath house! And don't get me started on the boiler room in the Palladium. But your right we all went in to where ever you could go to the bathroom and now cared...not even straight people cared. We have to also remember that most of America does not care about such issues...the GOP always uses the most stupid things to deflect from real issues.
DeleteThe bathroom issue is ridiculous. Buttegieg’s response was disappointing, but he’s better than this statement.
ReplyDeleteI think he did a good job and was compassionate. But I was hoping he'd answer in a hypothetical way if he had no push back and the power to do so. I think that is why the lady said "if you could." I still like him though, but I'm not sure way so many are afraid to take stances when it comes to trans issues, and wars.
DeleteThe short answer is trans people should be treated the way every single other person is treated; we are all Americans and that is where this stops.
ReplyDeleteLGBTQ+, Black, aged, Asian, disabled, we are all Americans and deserve equal treatment. Anything less is wrong.
If we would just keep personal morals people's personal lives and business and religion out of politics, we wouldn't have these issues.
DeleteBeing Trans should not be a problem. But it is.
ReplyDeleteIt's the new fuckery brought by the Religious Wrong and co-opted by the MAGAts what has made Trans people a political lighting rod. The whole bathroom bullshit is just where they have ended up being because it's easy. It has that 'ick' factor. They conveniently forget that in their own houses EVERYBODY pees in the same bathroom.
I don't think any progressive/Dem politician would answer that direct question. It's more nuanced than ''I'd do ___ to help Trans people' and Pete does show empathy, but it is a slippery slope. There is NO perfect politician. Not even one that is gay himself.
Do we want a change? We have to vote. Get our friends to vote. Get our family to vote. Get our colleagues to vote. We need to get more involved in politics. Eighty MILLION people did not vote the last election. All because of purity tests.
XOXO
Some days I think I know there's 80 million people feel about not voting, but I couldn't do it. And if people don't start building we're in Jeopardy of them stripping out right away too. Can't you hear it now if people have unloaded in the last five elections you're going to lose your right! I think I just get tired of empty promises, but like you said no politicians perfect. And these days they seem to be getting worse. I was so shocked and disappointed when I heard about it Eric Seawall.
DeleteJust think how much people must hate that they even force people to change their sex on their passports. I don't remember Jesus saying in the New Testament "hate one another!, so why do these faux Christians hate so much? They clutch their crucifixes and the hate comes pouring out.
ReplyDeleteWell apparently don't read their book of myths too well then.
DeleteVery moving.
