    1. I'll just comment on the Handsome Guy in Deauville's comment. I would guess that all of the Americans saw Charles de Gaulle in a scrubbed and sanitized image that our administration wanted us to see. I'm sure French history and the French people have a much different view of him. I admire your candor and differing opinion.

    2. A French friend of ours deeply venerated de Gaulle. We did not tell him how we felt.

    3. I've had a similar experience with the French. To them, he's a hero. Like Napoleon, he's deeply unpopular with us Brits. Jx

Oui, DeGaulle a manifesté du mépris envers beaucoup.
Trop complexe pour son propre bien.

  9. Complex, polarizing, difficult.

I read a book on him recently. Charles de Gaulle is generally not considered evil, but rather a complex, intensely nationalistic, patriot. While recognized as a war hero who led the Free French against Nazi occupation and established the Fifth Republic, he was equally viewed by allies as arrogant, difficult, and obsessed with France's, and his own, grandeur. is "France-first" approach led to strained relations with NATO and the US.
