Well, the Mistress got in yesterday, but for one day, as tomorrow I'm leaving again up at, and my first of three shows on weekends of the season, at the Woods Campground. So, I will be back to regular posting on Monday. But couple of days ago I saw a swell mini docu on The Weather Girls. I have always adored Martha Wash and Izora Armstead, who started as back-up singers. The clip is truly from a different time in 1980. Today, I don't think many shows would feature footage of overweight gals eating. Then again, I doubt if the girls minded--their name was then Two Tons of Fun, and the segment was probably arranged by their publicist. Izora always seemed like a hoot, and Martha has the prettiest face, and she went on to a pretty big solo singing career of her own, not to mention lent her vocals to C&C Music Factory and Black Box. I don't care how they look when they sound so heavenly. You can believe if I have to put together a DJ list, one of their songs will make the list. And I'm sorry, no one, Todrick or RuPaul can ever come near the original It's Raining Men, in sound, vocals or the god awful cheap campy look of the video.
I never tire of seeing their "It's Raining Men" video, LOL! And I didn't know they were Sylvester's backup singers, very cool.
ReplyDeleteI want my MTV !!! and my ON tv.
ReplyDelete1982 when It’s Raining Men hit the charts, hard to believe it was over 40 years ago ! Those rock videos made life fun with their eye candy :)
Izolda passed away in 2004 and Martha is still around.

40 years ago!!!!! Gulp......
DeleteLove "The Weather Girls"! Got "It's Raining Men!" queued for the blog!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved them. Awful that the focus had to be so much on their size. However, by owning it up front and making no excuses, they were able to succeed in the industry. So much talent and energy.
ReplyDeleteAnd while we lost poor Izora ...Martha Wash is still with us and still singing.
DeleteLove them!!
ReplyDeleteAnd welcome back. Cali Boi confirmed how busy you were…
XOXO
Some people dance in the rain, some walk, some just get wet. Dance away your weekend, it is raining men.
ReplyDelete"It's Rainin' Men" always makes me smile! And I will be singing it all day!
ReplyDeleteC&C Music Factory got sued by her for using her Voice in a Video but a Skinny Girl Lip Syncing it becoz of her being too heavy, she talked about it once in an interview. Continue to have Fun on your Summer fling my Friend.
ReplyDeleteOh yes that was a big stink. The thin girl's name was Zelma Davis. And they used her because she could dance. I could never figure out before I knew any of this how such a powerful voice came out of a thin girl. Of course singer India, is very small and thin and she had a hell of a voice.
DeleteI remember them! Adding them to the list when you DJ would be a great tribute! Have fun at The Woods. I sure wish I could be there with you.
ReplyDeleteThey did the best version of that song, hands down. Their prior name doesn't really fit anymore when you consider the average American woman is 5'4" and 172 pounds.
ReplyDeleteThey were utterly faboo! Their It's Raining Men was one of the songs that finally encouraged me to come out back in 1984, so I owe the girls a great debt...
ReplyDeleteRIP, Izora. Jx
Much like myself, I assumed you were always out and sprinkling glitter everywhere you went! Cheers darling. I can't wait to stop into your blog to see how your gay pride went.
