SNOW QUEEN...

...has arrived!

The temps dropped...and we finally got some snow!

The Snow Queen-
She stood there dressed in cold white down
as soft winds swirled around her.
Her angelic face smiled
as she surveyed her wonderland.
Her time had come again
as it did once a year
to cleanse the world white,
making it seem bright
under the pale moon.
She surveyed her kingdom
and with the sweep of her hand,
she watched as the snowflakes fell again.
The smile on her face
grew in its proportions
as the winter winds blew their deepest chill,
and then the Snow Queen knew
her season had last arrived.
The kingdom was hers again
before it came the time
when her sisters of spring, summer and autumn
would once more again
take their place on the throne.

I ventured out into the garden...not quite all asleep...
Now how long will the Snow Queen stick around?

The magical moment today was surrounding the cardinals. So many! They say when cardinals are seen in your garden it's a sign that someone passed on is thinking of you and with you. Then this happened.
I 'm sure it was my fun Aunt Barbara. I'll never forget this moment.
 Pure joy and trust.

    1. I was rather touched. What it meant, whether my story I was told what cardinals mean in the garden are not.. not sure, but I loved it.

  2. Great post, Mistress! What wonderful pictures especially the last one! here's to your dear Aunt Barabara! We don't get Cardinal here, but we do get Pileated Woodpeckers and Chickadees. Our fanciest birds are hummingbird's, cedar waxwings, and stellar jays when it comes to colors.

Years ago, I used to ride a bus to work across the 520 floating bridge that went across Lake Washington and through the Washington State Arboretum. I loved watching the western grebes and great blue herons.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Happy New Year Melanie!!!!!!! I was a great moment to start the New Year!!!!! It was a feeding frenzy at the feeders today. I saw a Cedar Waxwing here once. Not a usual variety we get. They're here, but not in huge number by any means.

    1. I've been trying to get a bird to land on my hand for some time, weeks, and today I never expected the cardinal to be the first, but a chickadee.

  6. Nice, but most queens I know aren't snowy at all.

  7. Your garden maybe devoid of colour (except the plucky pansies), but your Usual Suspects more than make up for it. What a colourful bunch! What's the red, white, and blue one in the third photo?

And that final photo: how thrilling!

    1. That bird you're asking about is a Eastern Bluebird. A very pretty color of blue, a rust color and white. I have seen them in the winter, but it's rare. More in the summer do we see them. I was overjoyed to have a bird, let alone a cardinal land on my hand!!!!

I had a bird perched on my feeder for so long yesterday that I went out to see if it was frozen to it. The bird flew away but I noticed that it came back later and stayed a long time, then it got dark. I wondered if it was maybe sheltering from the wind. I haven’t seen my cardinals, at least the males for a few days now. Your photos are fantastic especially the cardinal on your hand! Gigi

    1. I have seen that too. The ones that I see do that around here are the mourning doves. They will roost on the feeder, at least till other birds come and peck them in the backside to get them moving, and they also roost on the ground, and the fence for long periods. I do think birds shelter at times on bigger feeders from gales though. They sometime land on our windowsills and against the house in high gales too. We seem to have a lot of cardinals here this winter along with Jays.

  9. "They say she is a snow queen, but I don't think that's true, why don't we just get drunk and" . . . what was it Jimmy said? Maybe the bard came for a visit.

  10. You are lucky having such colourful birds; ours are mostly dressed to hide in the bushes. Hans Christian Anderson's Snow queen was nothing like your lyrical description; she pierced Kay's heart with ice.

  12. Those are lovely pictures. The Snow Queen visited our higher elevation area overnight, and here by the coast it's going to dip down to as low as 36 degrees tonight. I'm not looking forward to that.

  13. Wow. We have no garden birds as stunning as that Cardinal!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed we escape snow this winter, but it is only early days yet. Last year, our winter hit hardest when we should have had the start of Spring - with a killer frost in March! Jx

  14. So many great captures! I have missed your nature and Usual Suspects lately. ADORE the bird that landed in your hand too, a great moment to be sure... but I have to say my favorite picture is the second on of the frozen and snow-covered rosebud. Amazing that you still had any buds left and those pansies keep putting along don't they???

  18. Well, hello, Scarlet! It's amazing that one perched on your hand for a treat.
We've had many who've passed on come to visit us over the past two weeks. We'll be out on the patio and...Wham! the scent will surround us. Move out to the pool deck and...nothing. Come back onto the patio and there it is. It's been wonderful.

    Tundra Bunny here....

Winter finally arrived here too, complete with freeze-your-nuts-off wind chills! But it's my favourite kind of snow: pure white that sparkles like diamonds! Your garden is pure magic, Maddie, regardless of the season. We don't get red cardinals here, but we do have black-capped chickadees, bluejays, whiskey jacks, sparrows and lots of snowy owls over the winter. That last photo is a keeper!
