NOT ALL RED ROSES

Now, your probably thinking this is going to be a post about Grace Kelly. You'd be partly right but indirectly. Often times on this here blog  I mean to post more personal stories, but I never seem to get around it to, or something is mentioned in all the chatter in the comments section, and someone will mention I need to do a post around one of my comments back to someone. Sometimes on a blog the best nuggets are left are in the comments, ever noticed that? Which is why I always read mine, and comments on other blogs. It's often entertaining, and leads to to new blogs also. If a comment is witty, I wanna read their blog. A while back Dawn the Bohemian commented I need to do a post on a nugget I left. And it was my time dating a Kelly.

After my long term relationship ended, a lady I used to work with at my previous job and I kept in touch. She had a friend who took interests in me, but at the time I was taken. We met several times when they went to lunch together. Very handsome and older then I. After the split, she called and asked again, if I'd like to go out with him, since I was then split up and in a new job...and I hadn't met the Lad yet. Sure I said. She never told me that the guy was a  nephew of Grace Kelly!!  Turns out, the connection was his father, John B Kelly Jr, Grace Kelly's brother. Well, we did indeed go on to date for about a month and half, and had a pretty nice time. My creative, wild side seemed to balance his structured and buttoned up side. He served as president of an environmental organization that focused on climate change, polar and ocean issues and clean drinking water. He was very open about telling stories of Grace and how the family here is still very connected with Prince Albert II of Monaco, and he told of his father  and mother, Mary Freeman Kelly Spitzer, both of whom represented the US in various Olympics for swimming, and rowing for his father. It's also where he said his parents met. John B Kelly Jr won the bronze in 1956, and the gold in the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City.  His mother went one to be one of the greatest swim coaches in the US.

Father- John B Kelly Jr

But what shocked me most was some of the inside scoop. Grace may have been the only member to marry a royal, but she and her brother certainly weren't without scandal. He told me how his grandparents and others, worried her raging libido almost ruined her acting career, even thought she only starred in 11 feature films... and how her illicit affairs seemingly and miraculously disappeared from cultural knowledge and swept under the carpet. JB regaled me of stories he was told of her affairs with Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, William Holden. Even Bing Crosby tried. He went to the her room in hoping to sleep with her,  only to find Marlon Brando already in her room. Even John F Kennedy and Grace had flings, till his father put an end to that, worrying an actress would hurt his political career. She was even engaged for short time to fashion designer Oleg Cassini, but her parents ended that, as they didn't approve of his Russian roots, and he thinks the family even had a pregnancy terminated by him. Once she met Prince Rainer III, it was no small feat for Kelly, as her family had to fork up a $2 mil dowry. I guess being a princess isn't cheap.

But it was his own father that ignited a family feud that blew the family apart when he began a love affair with a transgender woman. He told me,  his father left his mother with him and his four other siblings for a playboy life. His father was a renowned womanizer when he met and fell for Rachel Harlow in the 70's, while she was working as a hostess at a disco club she owned called Harlow's. Harlow had her confirmation surgery in 1972, and also was well known in the film documentary, a camp classic to be sure, THE QUEEN,  which shows us the Miss All American Camp Beauty Pageant, which she won. So she herself was already a subculture star in her own right.

At the time.  his father was running for mayor of Philadelphia when he was dating Harlow.  JB told me his grandmother was none to happy about this and the public display and scandal of a romance with a transgender woman. She even approached Mayor Rizzo who was restless with trans jokes, and  two powerful Democrats to sabotage his fathers run for mayor. And no one wanted Harlow to be the "first lady" of Philadelphia. His grandparents didn't want the scandal to affect Princess Grace either. Grace herself he was told,  wasn't keen on it, and never mentioned it.  He went on to tell me, that his father was devastated by the political loss and his mothers betrayal.

Soon after, the romance fell apart with Harlow. In the end the whole thing affected his relationship with the family permanently,  and his father died of a heart attack when he was jogging after a row one day in Fairmount Park. Grace had died three years earlier. He was told that  Grace never spoke publicly about her brother or Rachel Harlow, or how it jumped many other issues in the family. But when his father, John B Jr was laid to rest,  Grace's royal family, Prince Rainer III and their children, did come to attend the funeral, which he does remember.

Where did that leave me? Well some things must never change. It didn't go anywhere. I found out from him later he was married!!! Figures, but I don't think in the long run it would have worked anyhow. There was too much hob knobbing with Philadelphia elite, and stuffy events for my liking. Oh I can hold my own, but a like events where there is a nice mixed crowd of all types and walks of life. And he wasn't all that good in the sheet if I have to be honest. But he was very gentlemanly. I only ran into him once since, here in Bucks County, at the ever faithful Raven at Tea Dance, where he no doubt, was looking for some dick. But is was a cool experience hearing first hand knowledge of someone like Grace Kelly and the family.  I hadn't know any of this. And I never did get around to telling him a was a drag queen on the side. Can you imagine what THAT would have done to the family.

Can you say history repeating?

TAXING TIME

This might be the earliest I have ever had my taxes done and submitted. I visited with Financial Advisor the other afternoon to have the taxes done and some other financial matters I wanted advice on. It was nice just taking and having coffee with him...all most gleeful! And gave me an excuse to get dressed up and wear a low cut blouse. Pandemics, and insolation do that I guess. I was even more gleeful when he came through already and had re-invested things, and had my taxes done....

and sent over my crunched figures and other assets.

I loved what a saw too!

WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR

Who wouldn't want Latrice Royale's nuts?

They just melted in my mouth! They're as chocolatey and fruity as the diva herself. And they come in a generous sized can, because we know Latrice has so self control. No Valentine gift says EAT IT like Latrice's nuts.  And because I hear Valentina has a nut allergy, I ordered her a whole case.

SPILLED TEA...DISCO FEVER

Oh dear. It was with such dismay and shock I watched yet another disaster this week. Quite frankly I was shocked Ru didn't pull a Joan Crawford, halt the show, and beat some serious ass. This seasons queens have shocked me more then any other,  and where to start???  It all started when Denali didn't know references from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford movies. How are you a full fledge queen, and not know famous quotes from them?!?! They are used in many a backstage dressing rooms by queens for fun banter. All I can say is thank god Denali is pretty. At another time, I recalled them not knowing who Lily Savage was. Yet another shock to not know one of the UK's most iconic drag queens. I was beginning to think these queens  do NOT know many gay pop culture things or their herstory. But then this episode, I KNEW if they didn't know the music history, they sure wouldn't know who Charles Nelson Reilly was!!! Poor Charlie.
Good lord, could you imagine if Rip Taylor walked through throwing confetti all over the set? They have no clue. But I never expected the Mean Girls, to not be able to name a disco artist they loved, or a song they sang. When Tina struggled with naming three disco songs, it shocked me, but then Mik couldn't even name any, and I dropped my notepad!!!! Has she never heard of ABBA?!?! But then it got worst when Kandy didn't know the difference between Donna Summer and Diana Ross. And that Lala didn't know much about Sylvester shocked me. I thought this is gonna be a train wreak of a show for sure.

At least this week the mini challenge was a cute idea, but a bit strange, not the theme of it,  but the way only half the queens had to be in drag and the other stood there, commentating the look of the other queen. Still the results were cute. I did like Utica's looks the best, where she demonstrated a world class visual and fashion sense that she undercuts with too much camp and weirdness, but, I worried, and thought she was going to pull a Ginny Lemon and walk off the competition. I don't know what in hell she was doing with that schtick? Maybe looking for Jesus?

Then it was the .....

I though the Disco-mentary was fairly well done and hit on all the most important parts of disco, and why disco was important to us queer folk and worked in references to the major players. But I sadly only got a great sense of disco from a few queens, if you went beyond the colorful lights and outfits.

Elliot, Olivia and Rose and Denali I feel were the best in this part of the performance. Tamisha was technically on point...but too timid, and I don't know what to say about Kandy's pantsuit? Lately, I say one thing about Kandy in drag...she's a rough boy. I can see why she and Tamisha would up in the bottom. but Tina's look while still in her trademark colors, she fucking killed that wig and her dances moves were surprisingly disco! I was glad she did a different style wig finally.

Then the runaway...little black dress! And best believe I had out my opera glasses!

With little black dress, which practically begs for the queens to get as creative as possible... fell short for me again. Ill go there to ground zero and say it. Cards on the table.... the worst for me was Gottmik. Sure, I understand why she did it...but she really should have gotten criticism. This was a pure fashion challenge category, and yet again we saw only skin, skin and more skin. Hunty...this isn't Suzie's Starlight Lounge on route 39 sweetie darling, by the no tell- motel! And in my opinion she could eat a sandwich or two.

Gurl...and right behind her is Tina...I'm not sure which was worst, the dress(sorry Florence if you designed it), was cute but otherwise a meh on Tina, or that wig that looked like it came out of a Party City Halloween bag. Tina is huge, she need huge wigs.

Was not feeling Elliott's black dress at all, or for that matter, Lala's. Did they go to the Deb Shop and get a group sale rate on the two for one?

While Olivia came out and I was yet again, surprised to find it more simple dress, she sold it because of her walk, and that HAIR!!!! I can definitely agree she deserved the win this week.

Rose' got a wave because thank goodness she brought a good disco performance,  but gurrrrl. Enough with the fucking tulle!!! She is showing hellaciously unflattering ensembles with it, and has featured more tulle then all of Scarlett O'Hara's dress in Gone With the Wind!!! But her wigs are snatched!

Denali's Black Spider dress? HATED IT! I wanted to go all Lady Tremaine on her and rip it to  bits, before she went to the ball. I just don't know why but I am not feeling Denali at all. She's like Fox News, she's entertaining, but you don't believe it.

Kandy. I'm getting ready for her to leave. And can she do anything without a group supporting her? She's just like Willam, she needs the other two to back her up. But alas, I will say she does have some intresting takes. She was one of the few to really take this challenge and do something creatively different, but still messy as hell.

But I thought Symone was the one who really killed the little Black Dress challenge She nailed it!!!!

And poor Utica. Her runway and disco challenge has exposed a potential hurdle. Utica is a very campy queen, who gets the laughs, but she may have to reign in some camp antics, and let the ensembles speak for themselves. I was not a fan of her black dress selection either. I mean this looked like the wicked witch, met Carol Burnett meets a gold tin man?!?!?!

In the end it was Kandy and Tamisha. While I personally enjoyed Tamisha's performance better, ,no doubt Kandy brought the fire, moves and explored more of the stage to set a mood. Tamisha gave some fire, but by then Kandy was already a steam roller not to be stopped, it's like holding that bitch back from a all you can eat buffet.

My other observations...someone tell Tina Burner to change up her colors. We get it Tina Burner. But I can't take any more Ronald McDonald. I also loved Tamisha's final bomb...she was performing all this time with a ostomy bag strapped to her. Now that is a true queen and legend and she's walking away from the competition head held high and the only one I surmise that truly knows her herstory, and gay pop references. But let's be honest I don't think she is the first queen to perform with a condition like this. Lady Bunny has been preforming since after Abe Lincoln and she's always been full of shit.

I also noted that this is the third queen eliminated from the girls from the Loading dock group. I sadly think were about to see the last of Elliott or Lala, next, followed shortly by Denali, who I suspect will float to the middle. Can you say Jan? and Utica or Kandy if they don't switch it up soon

And don't get me started with the trio naming themselves "The Mean Girls" and comparing to Rolaskatox. Oh hunty, I do believe Rolaskatox would mop the floor with the mean girls.

And now, how about some disco?
