THE WHITBY

While I was in New York for work and then  seeing the new Hudson Yards and playing in Neiman's new store....I think it might have herald the end of my hibernation.

I'm looking forward to my outdoor work outs again, provided it stays nice. Everyone always asks me where to stay in New York. When I used to go up for play, I would stay at my good friend and sister's Mame, aka David Dust. But since he has vacated New York, it is back to hotels. There are so many variables that go into choosing a hotel in the city that it’s always hard to make recommendations. I might just make things easier by telling everyone to stay at the Whitby Hotel. We all don't mind spending frivolous money on one thing or another....hotels are one of mine. I generally like boutique hotels best, as chains I find, one doesn't get the service they used to, and in chains one runs the risk of screaming kids and loud mouth teens. I can't tell you what all that yodeling does to my ears. I have also been finding the up keep and cleanliness of some chains to have gone down hill. I and the ex had a nightmare of a stay at a Best Western once. I still shutter. No. I have no problem dropping doe for a beautiful atmosphere and service and a hotel with a good bar and dinning options.
Love this light fitting!
Each basket has a ticket from country of origin.
A drawing and reading room. Some pretty good titles too.
Their afternoon tea is quite something, and worth it if you don't want lunch or a big dinner.

Kit Kemp has been at the forefront of the international design community, with her signature style that mixes contemporary elements with antiques and junk-shop finds, luxurious fabrics with printed wallpapers, and hand-finished detailing with collections of simple objects that create impact. She avoids taking design too seriously, playing with scale, color and pattern to create very personal, handcrafted spaces. She is the one behind the feel and interior design of the Whitby In New York. It's almost a given it's where I stay when I find myself there. Every stay is like a little adventure and eye candy abounds in the hotel, plus it's a stone throw from the Museum of Modern Art. I almost never wanted to leave my room.
Like Lisa Douglas....I adore a penthouse view.....and martini's in the room!
And you'd be hard pressed to get me out of that tub! Shame I didn't have a man with me.

Now this Saturday night found me in a room at the Hotel Palomar for a had out of towners in for some debauchery . The Palomar is another of my favorite hotels to stay when in town. It's like a little escape in my own backyard.
I have always adored the interior of the elevators.
Cock-a-tails abounded today with brunch and a hang over....and at the other end of the bar was Fern Mallis...so there was that.
Like good blog pal Penguin asked, do you prefer a certain go to hotel, or do you prefer chains over boutique hotels?

ROOM WITH A VIEW

This past weekend, Daddy Warbucks was back from England, but we pre-planned this visit for once. Our time took us to the big apple where he was staying at the Whitby Hotel. Last time he was here I mentioned I wouldn't mind seeing the photography exhibit of the talented fashion photographer, Irving Penn at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Incidentally...the exhibit is phenomenal if you get a chance.
out right, gratuitous eye candy.....And check out the booty of the guy up the steps in blue tee shirt.

I tell you this....I could really live in a hotel....permanently!!!! You may already know about this stylish boutique hotel chain by Firmdale Hotels, if you travel a lotwhich include The Ham Yard Hotel in London, and the the Crosby Street Hotel in New York. The owners, have created these luxury hotels which feel as if you are staying in the home of a very stylish friend. The Whitby is no different. By far one of my favorite hotels to date. I just love the unexpected in a hotel and the Whitby has it. The Whitby was a mix of old and new furnishings and fantastic art to boot. Each room has been curated and decorated by owner, British interior designer, Kit Kemp. The Whitby just opened their doors to the public in May, making this their second hotel in New York City. I didn't witness one blunder. It's  centrally located on West 56th street and 5th avenue, and a perfect spot to stop in for a summer cock-a-tail or 8 or dinner, and most certainly a favorite stay for out-of-town guests looking for a hotel with some character.

I wanted to take one of these home...
I anymore much prefer the boutiques hotel over the big chains. With their signature upholstered, tall headboards in each room, the Whitby is a hotel with a big personality, and I loved it.  The rooms are outfitted nicely with beautiful textiles and detailing in every nook and cranny. It's not often the bed linens are quite comfy and of quality, and the quilted head board..... was great!!! insert joke here_________. I didn't even want to get out of the bath one night.

The Whitby Bar was one of my favorite things about the hotel. Shocked aren't ya? The drinks were mixed perfect and the staff very engaging, and every table was set with fine touches, along with real china and silver. It made eating breakfast there each morning a real treat since such things are becoming more rare in restaurants.

Love the breakfast china.....birds!!!

The Whitby is also home to a library,
Warbuck's better side

The hotel offers, The Whitby Bar, The Conservatory where tea is served each afternoon, along with a movie theater and state-of-the-art gym. And the roof top views were spectacular!!! I have always adored a penthouse view....

The hotel is  quirky and nuanced, sophisticated, yet cozy, and very colorful, just like I like it, Aren't you surprised? If I forward my  mail there, I'll let you know.
