I have always loved her for her signature look and respect her for she famously operates outside the digital age, owning no computer, laptop, email, or iPhone, yet possessing an extensive personal library.
1981. She's out hawking "Social Studies." She's recently been on the cover of Interview magazine. She's appearing at Wordsworth, a bookstore in Harvard Square signing books. Since I worked across the river in Back Bay, I took myself over to get a book. I got to the store & was forced to hunt around, there were no signs, no mention of Fran anywhere. FINALLY I find her! She's like in the corner, in the back, sitting at a small desk and there is not a solitary soul anywhere; she's all alone! I'm immediately embarrassed & self conscious. Usually at book signings, one's told crap like, "Don't ask her any questions," or, "She'll only sign her name." I'm sure I said something stupid like, "Where the hell is everyone, you're Fran Lebowitz!?" Anyway, I surely vomited the usual fan fare, did my best to flatter her and went on my way. Back then, I wouldn't have had the life experience to really converse on her level. A very strange afternoon indeed.
