What with busy weekends and being away with travels, it's been a while since we have checked in with some of the usual suspects in the garden at the Casa du Borghese and the adjoining wood. Still going through bird seed left and right. They must LOVE the special blend I get at True Value. I have also been seeing deer enter the yard in addition to the Red-Tailed Hawk being back and the white squirrel was seen again. Last week I was pottering around the garden when I heard a heck of a ruckus coming from behind me, only to find the hawk on the ground, with one of the squirrels in its clutches. Needless to say, the hawk has been catching a few birds and at least one chipmunk too. He's been seen every day this week, so I named him, Jabberwock. The only thing to come to mind to tell the usual suspects was from Alice in Wonderland-
"Beware the Jabberwock my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch."
You really do get a vast array of Wildlife, lovely Imagery of them all, especially that Albino Squirrel!!! And your Food Porn is yummy.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy a huge breakfast on both weekend days. And the wildlife is changing....I noticed I haven't seen any robins already...they must have all migrated already. The catbirds too are leaving...with juno's soon to make an appearance.
DeleteBouvier II: long time, no see! And your photo of the curious hare is wonderful... I saw three jackrabbits myself this weekend. A good omen....
ReplyDeleteWith Jabberwock around the hare might want to keep a low profile.
DeleteYou're like me. I love a big breakfast, and that looks downright delicious. And yes, it's been overdue for a usual suspects post...but we knew they were still there. Glorious pictures. Even the hawk as menacing as he looks. Those eyes!
ReplyDeleteI have been terrible with keeping my cameras handy.
Delete"Beware the Jabberwock my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch." Yep, that sums it up nicely when a red-tailed hawk is nearby. We have several. And almost daily find patches of fur, or a pile of feathers left from an attack.
ReplyDeleteYes, watching all the carnage makes me hungry, too!
ReplyDeleteWe live on the bay, and every now and then I see hawks carrying a fish! It's aligns the fish with the flight path, so it looks like it's on a bombing run. In the Spring, we see a lot of hawks carrying snakes. I just hope they don't drop them...
I have seen Hawks flying with snakes but I can rest assured they weren't for my garden. The two things I can't stand are frogs and snakes. Although now thinking back I did have one toad in the garden which disappeared. Maybe the hawk got that too?
DeleteOh, you and Jabberwock. The irony of all the wildlife and birds followed by your eggs over easy.
ReplyDeleteWhy I can assure you none of those eggs were for many of my birds. A neighbor lady up the street raises chickens and she gives us eggs. Probably not the best way to end the post with so many fine feathered ones around here hey?
DeleteSorry, I don't do sunny side up eggs, otherwise, very nice.
ReplyDeleteThe deer; I love when the deer come into our yard. They just seems so graceful and peaceful.
ReplyDeleteAnd I've just finished breakfast and your photo makes me want a second go.
A lot of people around here don't like deer coming so close in because they eat their flowers, but for some reason I've never had any issue with them eating my flowers. They only seem to pull some leaves off trees. And you're posting they made me laugh about the Melania crack. Did you by chance see my meme on Sunday? As in the floor lamp? Lol.
DeleteAt the University of Louisville, seeing an albino squirrel on the way to an exam, is said to bring good luck. Seeing one outside your bedroom window???
ReplyDeleteWell don't tell me that I already have my hands full enough.
DeleteWhat a menagerie! Compared to that, we get um...sparrows, pigeons, the now rare Road Runner, neighborhood cats.....
ReplyDeleteTwo friends of mine who live in Arizona get road runners. I think they had quite a few set up nest! They didn't say anything about any Wily E Coyote though.
DeleteI wish I had those kind of animals. I get crows, skunks, gophers, and stray cats.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the upside down bird? It looks like a Nuthatch with different coloured plumage.
ReplyDeleteIt is a Nuthatch....one of my favorite birds. I enjoy hearing them and their sort of "laugh" .
DeleteA fine array of birdlife! I love that hawk - we have kestrels hunting locally, and occasionally we see a red kite flying over. Not bad for urban London, I'd say! Jx
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a kestrel in person, but I think they are so adorable...like mini falcons. While I do enjoy squirrels, the hawk is helping keep number down. Of course he is also attacking the pretty songbirds.....
