Three? Prolific, Playwright, Journalist, Activist, Brave, trailblazer, empowered, lesbian, intelligent....

She grew up on the south side of Chicago, a place rigidly segregated by race. In 1937, Hansberry's parents challenged Chicago's restrictive housing covenants by moving into an all-white neighborhood. Whites fought back. She didn't budge. Her writing and activism were instrumental in giving voice to the experiences of the African American community and lesbians and creating visibility for black women characters in the literary world. Her legacy continues to inspire and inform the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality.

Hansberry was an activist throughout her very short life (34), fighting for the rights of lesbian women and the Black community as a whole. Some also consider her work to contribute to gay rights activism. Due to her early death, the world was deprived of the beautiful work that was sure to come.
