DRINK COFFEE...FEED CATS

Coffee and cats may not have much in common, but I'm getting to that....

I have GOT to HAVE MY morning coffee. A couple of weeks ago, I was out of my regular coffees, which happen to be Costa Rican and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. I get from the farmers market at a stand called Dayton's, so a quick trip over to the market, but alas, I had forgot they were closed for a mini vacation, so I head to a local grocery store here called Karns. Since I get my same two blends of coffee from Dayton's all the time, I was at a loss what to get. And came across this coffee called Kitty Town Coffee. I'm a sucker for good marketing, I admit it's what caught my eye on the long shelf of selections. The artwork on the bag is adorable and I could even faintly smell the coffee through the bag. I tried a pound and was very delighted. Since then, I have tried 3 more blends and loved them all. I now get them along with my regular two blends I get from my guy at the farmer's market.

I found out in the meantime, they are a small and local company based in Lebanon, PA and founded and run by one Zanetta Kok, who founded Kitty Town Coffee five years ago as part marketing strategy, part charity fundraiser and part to scratch an entrepreneurial itch. The profits from every bag of coffee sold can feed a cat for a week. The Kok's give proceeds to not one but three different cat rescues. Ultimately the cats can be fed, but it is up to the individual rescue to use the money where best they think. The Koks have three cats themselves, and each has a blend of coffee named after then. Even Sydney, their original cat who passed on since, has the entire company dedicated to her honor. In all, the business features 21 brands bearing the names of cats owned by family and supporters.
I for one think this is great and made me smile, even though I'm a dog lover and owner. But as you know, I'm a huge animal lover in general. I believe in sharing things I enjoy, and I know I have many cat lovers and owners out there who may be interested. Worry not, even though the products are sold local, they do ship and, on their website, have a store locator on retailers nationwide where the coffee is sold, They have a very user-friendly website of coffees and some cool mugs too.

Flashback to the 70s and the lovely Virginia Christine as Mrs. Olsen for Folgers Coffee, mountain grown she would say, "It's the richest kind of coffee." I'll kid Dave R. a little and say my coffee comes from Colombia and I have Costco taste! LOL Actually their Colombian Supremo whole bean coffee with the leopard on the bag is highly rated; rich, dark, strong but not bitter flavor. Makes my morning mocha latte a powerful start to the day. Except on those cold winter days and when you're ailing and a cup of tea with honey and lemon hits the spot, I say Cafe Ole is the way to go.

    1. I may have been little, but would you believe I recall that ad!!!! I can still see it. I love coffee in general, but since my trip to Costa Rica, and tried their coffee...I have been hooked!!! And my aunt got me onto the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. And coffee has gotten expensive and bound to go higher. I generally get two pounds of each. And now adding in these. How can you not support local right?

  7. Thanks for the fresh tip, or should I say fresh dip Mistress!!!! I love this post, and I love coffee! And have cats, so I will be checking out their site tonight. I try to only support small business anymore. So glad I stopped in.

    1. I hope small businesses start doing a lot better than they were. So many people are over Millionaires and corporations, we need to start ditching them all together

We have a kitten rescue, Foxy’s Cradle, and we started selling their coffee at our fundraising events. I run the coffee bar and can tell you people seem to really enjoy their coffee. We sell quite a bit. Last week I believed we sold about 45 bags and many cups of coffee. Favorite seems to be Smokey and Albert.

  9. Since my two favorite coffee brands have stopped distributing in the U.S., I've been on the hunt for a palatable smoky coffee. Have gone through five coffee brands in the last 3 months, throwing them out midway through the bags.I found Kitty Town Smoky recently, like three weeks ago and love it. Maybe not as much as my disappeared brands, but close enough to once again enjoy my morning and afternoon coffees. AND I love that this company feeds stray cats with a portion of their profits. Win-win.

  12. How great you found a coffee based on the label design and it turned out to be good and the company good-hearted. That’s rare. My favorite coffee when we are on and about here is Delta. If we ever get a coffee maker for home, that’s what I would look for. SG didn’t want a coffee maker in Fuengirola because he said he would then never leave the house and morning coffee out was a great social opportunity.

  14. And Lebanon is yet another country invaded by Israel, so the Lebanese need all the help they can get to help those affected by the Israeli attacks and look after animals affected by the death of their owners.

  16. I love this, but it made me sad. I thought I found a local place that had this stuff. Turns out it's a Redfin listing for a home that's off the market. I'm guessing the prior owners sold this out of their place?

    1. To be honest I looked at the store listing I don't remember if California had any stores that carried it or not. I didn't really look.

  17. Kitty Coffee? Hmmm. with the plants dying off and tariffs, the price is going to shoot through the roof for all coffees. I remember back in the 70s we would put used grounds into the over to roast them and use them again.

P.S. Sorry Mads, I have to admit - the combination of font size and color have made it difficult for me to read your blog for a while now. What can I say? I'm old!!! LOL

    1. I used to use a normal font Pat but sometime ago Duchess Deedles had problems reading it because of a small font so I upped it to the medium font. But I suspect bloggers having issues because the medium does not look like the medium that it used to. When I use the large font it's way too big.

But the coffee is not bad. Right now it sells for $12.99 a pound, and I don't mind paying that as they give all the proceeds to these charities. Now the coffee at my other place and I go I usually get 4 lb, two of each blend and then my bills about 80 bucks. So their coffee has gone up already.

    2. I get it...you're right about the fonts; I use the large - which isn't anymore - and the extra large is too big.
Oh, we can expect coffee prices to go through the roof.

Love finding some place local to buy all my stuff! Supporting local businesses is essential, especially now. And coffee and a good cause? Yes.

  20. I am the exact same way about my coffee in the morning! I actually just had my kitchen cabinets refinished and put a little coffee bar in my kitchen. I haven't tried Kitty Town, but the bags are so cute I will have to hunt it down haha. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for popping in Jackie. If I've never tried something before, for example like coffee or wine and I'm not sure what to go with, the marketing always guides my decision. And lucky you a whole coffee bar!
