WE HAVE BABIES

I am bushed after my mother's visit, but a good time had by all, I think she thoroughly enjoyed herself. And just in time for the weekend we have babies. Last week while walking around I came across Oliver and Olivia, two Canadian geese you may remember. We have never had geese before  on the grounds, but with a small pond and creek conditions are right. Well, we have babies now!

I've been monitoring them. They haven't chased me, as I did sprinkle some dried fruit and corn /wheat mixture I got for occasional treat for them. But my worrying has started. They get too close to the road...
And Miss Foxy has also discovered them.
I'll talk to her about this, but Oliver seems to have it under control.
But just this afternoon, threat came from above when the Red Tailed hawk took one of the goslings. It was very distressing.

  1. The world can be a hard place for little goslings. Let's hope the rest make it okay.

  7. I always enjoy your pictures, but I'm scared to death of birds if they get near me. The fox is stunning.

  8. It's a bird eat bird world. I've already shared my experience with geese. Poor baby, but one less adult goose to chase poor innocent humans.

    1. Deedles, when you hit a year of commenting here, I gifting you with a goose couple!!!! Or would you rather have just a good goose?

    2. It hasn't been a year yet? It feels like I've been here since you were in diapers :) You can take that goose couple and, and, donate them to a soup kitchen! I have an unforgiving nature when it comes to geese and chickens. By the way, is there such a thing as a good goose? Mine have all been unpleasant.

  9. There is a pair in a pond near my house, dumb as house plants. They will panic and leave for no reason. The ravens move in then and take the babies.

  12. What an amazing nature show you get to enjoy, live and in living color!

Love the awesome gaggle pics. Sad to hear about the lost baby chick, but that's the circle of life. If anyone ever wonders what dinosaurs were like, they only have to look at raptors to realize what fearsome predators those ancient dinosaurs were.

Thanks for sharing these awesome fotos!

  13. It's so hard not to fret about the young birds... I try to put it out of my head and hope that mum and dad know best - after all, they survived.

  14. It can be distressing to watch that. Even I got a little emotional when I saw a couple release a squirrel back into the wild only to have a cat climb up the tree and snatch it mere seconds later.

  17. I tend to react neagatively to Canada geese only because they often stay year round and crap everywhere. However they are beautiful and… goslings! I’d be very worried all the time.

  18. You look pretty close to that fox. I love seeing her. How close have you ever been to the fox or is that,a,zoom in?

    1. Yes, this was zoomed in. But one summer I was out on the porch sitting on the steps when she walked past and didn't expect to find me in the wee hours of late night. She sat about less then a foot...we sat and stared for ages at each other. I wanted to reach slowly to see if I could pet her, but didn't want to break the stare. She finally calmly, walked off.

  19. We had a duck leading her babies along our street... A neighbor led them to his pool. Then animal rescue took them to the natural wash nearby. It sure is a sight to see.

  21. Love the photos! I never seem to have my phone or a camera nearby when birds are nearby. The MITM aka my husband did manage to film a woodpecker in our yard. (vid is on my blog, if anyone wants to see it) xoxo

    1. Thanks for the tip Savy! I went and watched it. I get two woodpecker, one similar to yours but not with the crown. We don't have any pileated woodpeckers up here to my knowledge. But the Red Bellied one I have is up at crack of dawn...pecking like crazy on drain pipes.

  23. I see a lot of geese in the middle of a thin bike trail next to a Beautiful pond. They have there chicks with them and if I try to bike down the trial they get in my way and hiss at me and I turn back and go home because I'm scared they will attack me.

Should I really worry about them attacking even when I'm on a bike and able to get away quickly?

    1. When the geese hiss, the male, they usually won't chase you...unless you start getting really close to the mother and babies...then the hissing will turn to chase. The hiss is usually a warning to keep your distance.

  24. Oliver and Olivia are some magnificent looking Canada Geese! And I'm sure their goslings will be too - as long as they survive. Soon they'll be too big for that hawk.

There is a pair of Egyptian Geese by the river on my walk to work, and last year they had two or three goslings, but I didn't see them for long - I think a fox or cat or something must have got them. No babies this year :(
