THE EXPEDITION

It had been 46 days since yours truly left the house to go out to where more then three people might be. Since this pandemic started, the only time I have been out is on walks or runs with Buster or a few car rides. Being on extrovert, it's not been as hard as I thought it might be. I can very easily bounce between intro and extro...especially since I have a stronger dislike for earthlings then in the past, but I digress. I must admit to having had  some anxieties to going out.  I didn't know what to expect, would some idiots not be following guidelines, would there be to many people or lines, and then there is the whole getting ready. I got fully decked, yes... as in dressed and shaved and all. Hey!!! As Joan Crawford said, "I never go outside without looking like Joan Crawford the movie star. If you want the girl next door, go next door." After that I collected my bags and mask and my handy rubber gloves!!!! Oh yes I did!!!! I only really needed staple items and meat, a few cheese's, and some snacks. My milk I get delivered and my eggs come from a neighbor, so I was off and must admit to being pleasantly surprised at two different stores. Both stores were in Doylestown and across the street from each other. the first , THANKFULLY was where most of my provisions came from.
The produce sections was tidy and empty. YAY!!!!!!!
The meat section was a ghost town!!!! I couldn't believe this. I was able to get pork, lamb chops, chicken breast, and hamburg for stuffed peppers.
Even the bakery section was null of any humans!!!!
The baking aisle surprised me...sugar and flour was almost depleted.
The butter too was very low...it was mostly boxes of sticks. The container of Blue Bonnet was gone. The horror!!!!! So sticks it was.
It was refreshing to see their nuts were neatly stacked and organized.
The frozen foods aisle was a ghost town as well. And fully stocked I might add.
Curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to check out the paper goods, even though Im fully shocked in all those. CLEAND OUT!
Nice to see though they had guidelines posted. After collecting everything I wanted and got, I went to the checkout. They have one line, and a sale person would then direct you to a self check out or a to a clerk, your preference.
Now the other store I used, had a person at the door counting people going in. The store was also much more crowded..so I was already more jumpy. People scurrying around like little mice. I'm one of those shoppers who uses different stores for different items .I use like four different markets. This store I like better for produce and seafood.
Again a nice, full selection of produce. A couple of people did get too close to me several times. I almost was going to put my basket down and just leave, but I muddled through. Outside of this section, this store at the end of each aisle had directional arrows, so aisles are up or down, which I thought was nice, in addition to announcements stating various guidelines. Also the first store I went,  didn't allow re-usable bags, so once out to the car, I moved my items to my owns bags, and then disposed of the cheap plastic ones to the store recycle center by the door. The second location allowed re-useable bags.
This store too I noticed was hit harder in the rice and beans aisle.
Again, the paper goods aisle was empty. They had even less then the other store. Thank the Gods, I don't need any paper goods.
All over the store they had posted these handy list, so costumers knew up front what items were limited to purchase quantities.
Of the two stores, when I have to go back, I will most likely frequent the first store till this is over I think. While they might not have certain things I want, I was much more relaxed and not anxiety ridden. The second store is always nice and clean, but way to many people for my current comfort zone. And while I like the aisle specific direction, it was work to keep cognisant of which direction the aisle was, and if you forgot something that was at the other end you already passed, could you go back and get it, or did you have to leave the aisle, go down another to return to aisle to get forgotten item?

I saw the above sign on the way to the market. There are some great small bussiness out there. Good on them. Luckily at my farmers market which is all curbside, I ordered what I wanted and it was brought out to the car. Otherwise , it is too much drama shopping right now, trying to remember everything, getting ready, and trying to be social etiquette distancing. Once home, everything got a wipe down. I then fixed a very nice gin and tonic. I shouldn't have to go out for several weeks again.

But my gloves were a hit with several people, so there was that.

  2. Wow I'm surprised at the store being empty. Maybe everyone drank bleach!!!
Flour... yes apparently it's constantly being sold out because everyone is baking these days. Same with sugar and butter. Now I hope you took a good chemical bath when you returned.
I haven't been to a store since March something something.

    1. My flour and sugar I order online from King Arthur, because I have been baking so much lately. This is probably the longest in my life I have ever been sequestered away from people. Now I know what time to go again...early afternoon!!!!

  3. It's nice to see some people step up, while others hoard.
Our friend who owns the bakery in town is shut down, but is baking bread for soup kitchens and homeless shelters in the area.
    Nice.

  4. My grocery store just started the "one-way aisle" thing too. I walked about 10 miles more than I had to because of it, but I see its value in keeping people at a minimum in each aisle.

  6. Just by the look and sound of it, I'd go with the first store too. When I go to the store I always get worked up. Will it be to crowded? And I also use various stores like you for certain things. Its been interesting seeing how one store is packed another isn't. Whole Foods down here has been insane...so I probably won't go back till this blows over.

And you go with those gloves girl!!!!!!

  7. I can't believe how empty the stores are. I've been shopping three times in the last six weeks. Every time I've had to queue for a good half hour or so, just to get into the shop. Most things are in stock the exceptions are flour, yeast and pasta.
The queue to checkout was really long. A trip that ,in normal times takes me an hour is taking me almost three. But at least we can get what we need.
It just shows, when human life is pared back to the bare necessities, we really need very little.
I bet you brought a lot of smiles with your rubber gloves!

    1. THREE HOURS!!!!!!!!! I will never complain about this again. Some stores here do the queue thing also, the second store I went to in this post does that, but I think I didn't go at busy times. I was second in line when I went. These times.... It also shows how you can make things stretch too.

  8. I love those gloves!!!!!!!

That is one thing I don't miss since moving here. There are so big stores, but where I live it's a drive, so everywhere I go in Amsterdam is on the smaller side, more like mom and pop stores. So I never have to deal with anything like you guys go throw. I look at these pictures now and realize just how big stores are there. That bakery in to be commended.

  9. Im only surprised you didn't wear the wig too!

With online shows going threw the roof, I have had most of my groceries delivered. But looks like you found the magic hour to go. Was it senior hour?

  10. Seems you found the magic hour to go shopping. The store I go to seems to always be crowded, even after trying to go a different times...still packed, and people were not paying attention to directional signing. It is stressful. I need to come there.

I want a pair of those gloves now!!!!!!!

  11. You gotta love those who keep there nuts nicely stacked and organized.

  12. To use a well-worn cliche of politicians and the media, queuing is "the new normal". Everywhere, inside and outside the shops, is marked out with six-foot "safe distancing" tape and security only let a limited number of customers in at any given time. There are plastic shields at the checkouts, and in some shops someone sanitises the handles of baskets and trolleys after each use. By complete contrast, the Polish, Turkish and other corner shops around our neighbourhood have no such systems in place - I find those more scary than the supermarkets, by far. Jx

    1. Some food store and home improvements stores are do queuing with the markings and person running the line.it think store with high traffic are doing that. The second store was doing that...but with my timing I was only the second in line. I haven't been to any smaller markets at all...with exception to a farmers market...but them a ordered it and brought to my car.

  13. Our supermarket hasn't suffered from Empty Shelf Syndrome since the first few days of lockdown, which is reassuring. Glad to see, however, that yours has taken things seriously. And I love those gloves. So flexible, you can pick up a dime? And, I too, shower, shave, and spritz before I leave the house. Wouldn't want to disappoint my fans with a bad photo splashed all over the front pages of Us or the Philadelphia Inquirer. Oh, wait, do I mean the National Enquirer? Whatever.

  14. Like you when I shop I go to certain stores for certain items. And now they have all curtailed their hours. The one store used to be open 24 hours now 7A-10P. Even Costco regulates how many people are in the store. And they have associates by the paper goods to ensure you only take one mega-bundle. Another store limits capacity to 50 shoppers and one person per cart.

And still no disinfectants at any of them. This does take some getting used to. And possible meat shortages on the way.

    1. That's why I like a good repor with my vendors at the farmers market. Since they aren't open physically yet...they will take orders and bring to the house my fresh produce and fruit items..and even my coffee guy will too. I've been my a nice list to give them some treats.

  16. This is going to be the new normal. I see emptier aisles and more organization and signs in grocery stores and stores in general from now on. A vaccine may make things better, meanwhile...
And they are still stocking paper products, huh? I saw that Trader Joe's was also low in rice and beans. And I could not find my favorite Miso soup.

    XOXO

  18. I'm glad to read your first trip was relatively well. You can certainly do well in a pandemic with making things last. I order everything in or a neighbor goes since im not feeling well. Of course, you still managed to het a laugh out of me with a few lines and the news correspondent take.

  19. Thank God for our farmers market here...our grocery store is a trek to get too, and they are low on meats and milk and butter...and virtually still no paper goods or cleaning supplies. Even the little drugstore in Ptown is getting low on a few essentials. Now I bet you wiped down all your groceries with gin didn't you?

  20. Ahhh, Doylestown. Nice, even there they seem to be doing a good job. One way aisles, limits on certain items and few people in the store. Here? Oy, vey!! Such mashuga you wouldn't believe. Loads of COVIDIOTS with no masks, ignoring the aisle arrows, loading up carts, not maintaining distances.... We do our part by following the guidlines and the rules of the grocery stores. We have started patronizing one in particular because they require masks - No mask, No Entrance. Love it!!!

    1. All the essential stores here, well, in Bucks County anyhow, are all, no mask, no entrance!!! Even curbside service. When outside it's law to we are suppose to be wearing masks now to further notice. In public.

    2. There is a lot of contradictory opinion about how safe or effective or even necessary face masks are, as opposed to safe distancing and washing/sanitising one's hands after touching anything. There's a high level of concern that they give people a false sense of security and that people using the wrong specification or homemade (or just badly-fitting) masks a) won't have a sufficiently high protective barrier to prevent either outward spread of infection if they have the virus nor inward prevention of breathing it in; b) have no protection for their eyes, which negates the overall protection level; and c) fiddle with masks to adjust them thus touching their face with dirty hands or dirty gloves more than they would without one on. The most rational set of opinions on the matter I have read is this one featured on the Science Media Centre site. Jx

    3. I will have to read that link, thank you. I too have thought about the eyes and wondered about that. I wonder if I should wear my oversized shields? I did notice many fumbling with masks A neighbor of mine made me out of the kindness of her heart several lovely masks. She then said it they don't fit, let her know and she would adjust them. They all fit rather nicely and stay in place. They even have a slot to slip in a coffee filter for another layer of protection. Whether it helps or not, who knows. That's out of my jurisdiction kid.

Now you and Madame Arcati stay safe me dearies.

  22. ...just a few short months ago, who would have thought a mundane trip to the stoke would be such an adventure! Love the photo series documenting your expedition...great gloves! I’ve been venturing out to a small neighborhood store where I work...great people, generally well stocked (no flour of course...everyone’s baking!), and my favorite double IPA is in the cooler.AND virtually empty when I go on a Saturday morning ( the locals can shop anytime during the week since they’re staying home. Excellent post!

    1. Oh I know right? I have always loved shopping the markets! No it's an ordeal. I will go back to the first store when I need more provisons...as it was ALL but empty. When it gets warmer , my farmers market will convert outside, since their indoor layout would be impossible to social distance, thought they may do a queue, and only allow 20 to 25 people in and see how it goes.

  23. Oh I loved seeing your expedition. And I love how you gloves match your bag, the sign of a true lady!!!!

We have been going during the senior hours, so I don't know what we'll do when those end, it has spoiled us. We have for the most part got everything we need on trips but the paper goods. But thankfully my daughter gets those big bundles at Sam's Club, and then splits them with us and my son. And I still do my hair every day. But I'm itching for a day of culture.
