Cher, timeless! Tina Turner, timeless! Kate Smith, timeless and what a hoot! I remember watching this show and the Sonny and Cher variety hour back in the day. Thanks, Mads, for this timeless walk down amnesia avenue! I love the vintage Cher.
I don't think they know how to anymore, Ms Agnes. Wow, this took me back! Carol Burnett. Flip Wilson and such. I remember a sketch with Cher as Lavern and Flip Wilson as Geraldine. Too funny! One thing a loved about Cher besides her glamor (thank you Bob Mackie) was her ability to not take herself too seriously. She always looked like she was having a blast! I'm going to stop complaining about getting old. Think of the stuff we would've missed. Now where is that cranberry juice? This UTI is kicking my bladder.
Tundra Bunny here... I remember watching the Carol Burnett Show and Laugh-In as a kid. Those shows were great! Here in Canada, we all tuned in to the weekly "Wayne & Schuster" show and laughed til tears rolled down our faces. The days of families gathering around the only TV to watch shows together every week are long gone -- like family meals, alas.
I miss those variety shows, too. You could see contemporary stars but also the people from the past. I remember watching some show with my mom and she said, Why, that's Kate Smith. I didn't know who Kate Smith was at the time, so that was my introduction to her. I never missed Ed Sullivan, Cher, and Carol Burnett. When those shows ended and there were attempts to come up with new variety shows, such as Dolly Parton (which I watched and loved), the shows were always canceled because viewers were too few. I think it's this week that NBC is going to do a 90th birthday tribute to Carol Burnett. I will be watching when it streams on Peacock.
I remember being completely boggled by this when I first stumbled upon it. I mean, who the fuck is/was Kate Smith anyhow? And (particularly when I Googled her and found out about her history of "Christian morality campaigns") why the fuck was she on the Cher show in the first place?! Jx
This is surreal to see, I had forgotten about this episode. I’m pleasantly surprised to see Kate Smith there. It was quite fun to watch! I do recall her, and Cher had a surprisingly good friendship. And by Christian standards today, Kate had fun and was even good at poking fun at herself.
Thanks Mistress Maddie, this was a delight to watch. I never seen this clip before, All three of the greats did a marvelous job with the Beatles songs. Boy, that Tina Turner has great legs!!

ReplyDeleteWhere have you been???
DeleteThey sure don't make shows like that anymore, aye Duchess Deedles?

ReplyDeleteI read once Cher had been highly entertained by her. For some odd reason.
DeleteCher, Tina Turner and Kate Smith - singing the Beatles! Now that came out of left field. I had to click on this one.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, the Seventies were awesome!

ReplyDeleteOh my! I love Cher and Tina, but Kate's voice makes all my hair stand on end, much like Ms Mermen's!
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to do a Beatles medley, you need a fourth. Charo, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteCharo. Forever the "Ringo" in such situations. Jx
DeleteAs Agnes said, it is very surreal. It says a lot about America at that time, what that is precisely I don't know. But believe me, it's saying a lot.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing Kate Smith in "Peter Pan' although they had some troubles flying her.
ReplyDeleteI could only surmise that would take some very strong tough tight ropes.
DeleteThanks for the memories
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on and stay safe
That is an odd grouping.
ReplyDeleteCher seems to love entertaining, with any partners, to any audience
ReplyDeleteSounds like me and Cher have a lot in common.
