Another good weekend. A trip to the Barnes in Philadelphia was the order of the day Saturday for a special exhibit and symposium, and a day of relaxation yesterday. Couldn't complain about the weather either...as our warm and mild spell continues. I had seen a gate to a townhouse while away this weekend that was very reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, which had me thinking of that time. At the time, Art Nouveau invaded every aspect of life from architecture to fashion and was often inspired by natural forms such as sinuous curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines, and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, ceramics, and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces. I would have loved to have lived during that style period. My other favorite was Rococo. More on the visit later.
I do like that archway, and the do Metro entrances in Paris like that.
ReplyDeleteArt Nouveau seems moody and a touch evil and dark in some of the designs, and I love that ...like the Metropolitan sign and entrance.
ReplyDeleteLove mood board posts. And this one is as stylish as I like.
ReplyDeleteI very much like your new header too, by the way. But this you already figured :-)
I LOVE this. The color chart I've used the "Butternut Squash" and "Paprika" color in the kit bungalow we had in North Carolina.
ReplyDeleteI would love to do a room in paprika color sometime. At least an accent wall.
DeleteTundra Bunny here... You must be psychic, Maddie! Art Nouveau is my favourite design period for buildings, wrought ironwork, furniture, glass, silver and most especially jewelry. From the start, I was captivated by the influence of the natural world on Art Nouveau jewelry, especially the use of mabe or misshapen pearls, lesser known gemstones such as chalcedony, and glorious enamelling. I've only ever seen Lalique's famous brooches in books, but I still hope to see them in person someday!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites too. I think because it stands out as so different compared to other periods, and so far, different from what we see going up today. You would have loved my favorite store in NYC then Tundra.Henri Bendel was a magnificent store, only recently shuttered two years ago, and was largely visible due to the presence of the three story high Lalique windows.
DeleteHmm, something about those men with the birds.
ReplyDeleteOne of my absolute favorite styles... even more than rococo.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I say where is the style, grace and elegance in buildings these days?
DeleteI like this mood board, Mads. It makes me feel things. I don't know exactly what things, but that's beside the point.
ReplyDeleteMen gently handling a cock or too. Always engrossing.
ReplyDeleteArt Nouveau's nice too! Jx
PS That bizarre building 4th from last photo - that's CGI, isn't it? It can't be a real place...
Yes....A computer-generated image by some architect I believe. Would be cool if it was a real building.
DeleteNo 9 amazing x
ReplyDeleteOh my, I just love the wrought iron decor piece in the circular archway of the first photo! So gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to knock a wall out and do that somewhere.
DeleteThere's some examples of Art Deco here in Chi in one of the train stations. Super fab.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of this being a trend. You are about the fourth interior decorator who predicts this is going to be huge this year.
Loves it.
XOXO
I would love to see a return to it.! And Im not opposed to having a peacock or two. But I'll settle for just cock if I have too.
DeleteThis might be one of my favorite mood boards! I too love the Art Nouveau period. And love parrots!
ReplyDeleteA favorite mood boards!!!!! I too loved the time in design. It just reeked out taste and style. And speaking on taste I used to love a nice little glass of Absinthe. Now it will knock me on my ass. And I love Art Nouveau art illustrations. I love several reproductions and prints.
ReplyDeleteI've only had Absinthe once. Very mind altering.
DeleteI like the colour palate throughout - suits this time of year.
ReplyDeleteSx
I thought the same thing. I enjoy a nice naturist or subdue color palette myself.
DeleteThat building 4th from last makes me think of Gaudi, although not his hot mess the Sagrada Familia. My favourite is the Casa Battló.
ReplyDeleteWhile creepy looking, that would be an awesome building to live in, if it were real.
DeleteI love that and I didn't even know it was Art Nouveau. I especially like the picture of the front of a building near the drawing of the man admiring a cute little birdie and his own penis. Next you have to teach me about Rococo. My daughter once won a prize at a Halloween party for dressing as the green fairy. She took a bottle of absinthe and taught everyone how to drink it. I'm sure that made her popular.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Janie...that would be a awesome Halloween costume!!!! Im sure you can use the Freaking Green Elf Shorts and do your own green fairy with a bottle of Absinthe!!!!! When I ever send them. Soon!
DeleteThat looks like something out of New Orleans. I miss that place.
ReplyDeleteThat is one city I have yet to want to go too.
DeleteIn Italy the Liberty style is also called floral style. I see that sometimes it can be as rich as rococo style.
