GRANDE DAME

I don't know how many of you were watching RuPaul's Drag Race UK....but Divina De Campo, or as I call her the  big DDC,  nearly won the season...coming in runner up!!! I thought for sure she would have this. I mean her runways and creations were spectacular. But we'll take runner up. I by far enjoyed the UK version...so much more campy and less fishy.

Divina De Campo started drag in 2005, where she hails from Brighthouse, Westchester, who has slowly built a loyal fanbase. I adore Divina's style...nothing like old school drag, with a huge pinch of glamour, huge lashes and a approximate painted face!!! Her style reminded me of my own.  Her drag name is Italian for Divine, who is an inspiration for her. She regularly performs at Kiki in Manchester's Gay Village.  In January 2016, De Campo appeared on The Voice, auditioning with the song "Poor Wandering One" from The Pirates of Penzance. One of the judges being her idol Boy George was on that season  Despite none of the judges turning their chairs for her, George later expressed regret for not picking her. In December 2016, De Campo starred in The Ruby Slippers, a play that explores issues of identity and prejudice in the LGBT community.  In 2017, De Campo was a part of a campaign to support the George House Trust, a charity supporting people living with HIV. De Campo hosted Superbia's Drag Queen Story Time, in which she read stories to young children. Then in August 2019, De Campo was announced as one of the 10 queens to be competing in the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, where Divina won four challenges and finished as the first runner-up.  Divina De Campo is the stage name of Owen Farrow, and is known for his high soprano and 4-octave range, When not touring, recording or filming, Divina enjoys a quiet life with his husband.
Here's a clip preview of her upcoming song. I think we know from this season who will be going on to bigger things. I only hope she does some US appearances.

And her amazing Voice appearance.

  2. I too love Divina! Her drag style is sooo glam. She is going places for sure. I also liked the UK version better. Our version is getting to fishy, with exception to one camp queen per season.

  3. I never watch it, as you know, but I had to look her up when I read where she was supposed to be from ("Brighthouse, Westchester", which sounds distinctly American). She's actually from Brighouse near Halifax in West Yorkshire - a town otherwise famous for the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, which, remarkably, got to #2 in the UK charts - at the height of Punk and Disco - in 1977 with The Floral Dance. It was undoubtedly a formative influence on her. Jx

    1. Yes, it was a good season. The UK queens have more fun, and much more campy, and didn't get all serious about drag...the way it should be. And you were right though. Baga Chips got on my nerves. Divina and Vinegar Strokes were by far my two favorites.

  4. Another Divina fan here. She's fabulous....I can't THINK why I love her so.

  5. That child does have a voice! Now, at the risk of sounding really stupid, what exactly does fishy mean when pertaining to drag? I find you easier to understand than google. Actually, I'm too lazy. I tried to make it to the end of the year without commenting and I couldn't get through November. Oh well, I missed everybody.

    1. ALL ARISE......Duchess Deedles is in the house!!!!! I and we, have missed you too and we fully understand. You know you always make my day!!!! Yes, Divina can sing some operatic now. Fishy, is what the drag world call drag queens, who aren't campy or drag looking...rather look very close to real women. In some cases it's hard to tell the queen from the woman.

And did I mention I missed you???

      Well I did ((((( ))))). That's a huge gay hug from me

    3. Thanks for the explanation, Maddie. I think that I would much prefer the nonfishy queens. Also, thanks for the huge gay hug! One can never get too many of those.
Thank you, Ms Agnes. Try not to back up Maddie, though. He gets excited!

    5. That's okay, Mads. A little glitter never hurt nobody. I needed a shower anyway.

  7. I'm with Cello Josh. I almost enjoyed DR UK better. The quirky was strong in these girls and I love me some personality. Also, there was a good combo of glam and camp.
Divina was, in my head, the winner. But oh well. You know that their lives will never be the same. There's a bright future, for Miss DDC.

    XOXO

  13. What an incredible range! Obviously, the audition wasn't meant as a genuine thing - after all, they are looking for pop singers (of whatever genre). I've seen them turn down some very talented folks auditioning with Broadway. These judges simply don't know what to do with them. But, what a great move on his part! I couldn't WAIT for those stunned faces on the reveal.
