BARN LAID

Right off the bat, no, I did not go and get laid by a farm hand in a barn.
 It's these!
Two weeks ago, Margo, a lady with a booth at the farmers market,  sold me these fresh eggs. She has Copper Marans and Speckled Legbar's. On a side note, her pumpkin and gingerbread waffles are also to die for.  A co-worker at my old job used to bring me eggs every couple days. Around these parts it's very common to see signs for Fresh Eggs for sale. Today, I made a huge onion omelet once home. I may never go back to store bought. The yolks are so rich amber, and the taste, by far, fresh tasting.

  2. Once I had fresh, I've never gone back. I go to a lady on the main line now for years to get my eggs. There's a huge difference in taste.

  4. They are pretty, but I am disappointed. I was hoping for a barn sex story, with you being sexy and a good layer and all.

  5. I have a 9year old hen, the last of a flock of four. She still lays an occasional egg. There is no comparison between fresh and shop bought eggs.
We are what we eat. We need to eat well to stay well.

    1. Have you considered getting a new brood Christina? People I know really seem to enjoy their coops.

  6. We are starting to become more organic and 'green'. The fresh eggs by far taste so much better. We have even considered getting a couple hens.

  7. Those eggs look beautiful! Yes, fresh eggs is the way. So tastey!

As a child I would visit Mrs. Brasher in our little town just outside Ann Arbor, and sit for hours on top of the small hen house waiting for the lunch siren to go off at the old Brick yard. I was told numerous times to stay out of the Chicken yard, Mrs. Brasher would try and scare me with talk about snakes and mean Roosters so I would stay out of the chicken coop.

Today my neighbor has what you might call free ranch chickens, since they roam in everyone's yard. I have seen numerous a Mother Hen with her small brood of about 10 baby chicks scratching along the fence over years. They were such a joy to watch. It's like our small town has not made it to the 20th century and I guess that's okay, since I enjoy hearing the roosters crow every morning and the chickens roaming all around town.

    1. That's a pretty funny story, so glad you listened so well. I have a cousin who ran a community farm in Ann Arbor for years. Such nice produce flowers and honey and candle she had. She and her husband recently moved to CA on another farm. The winter's were to rough on them in Ann Arbor after all these years.

  8. So beautiful in a basket, too. It's almost lunch time here. I'm hungry. The thought of those waffles has me salivating. As for a farmhand in a barn, is that NEVER or just not this week?

  9. My brother raised and fed five chickens (four roosters and one hen)when we were young. The hen would lay an egg occasionally; not enough to feed a family of four. I don't recall if her eggs tasted any different from the store bought eggs.

  15. One Thanksgiving when we visited my Aunt Lynn, she served us eggs from her farm. They were very good and the yolks were the brightest yellow I ever saw.

  16. Well, store-bought eggs are always white for some reason, but years ago I worked at McDonald's, and one time eggs with different shells were used because there was a shortage of white eggs. I myself had scramble eggs on my break that came from non-white shells, and I can't say they tasted any different.

    1. Probably not. The fresh taste I believe come from freshly laid eggs the same day or the next day. You can tell a fresh egg. Stores and distributors get the eggs many days later or even a week or two later. The lady I worked with brought them the morning she plucked them, so I had them the next day. I have gotten brown eggs from the shop and they do taste like regular eggs. But if the carton says range free or cage free they will be well feed birds and healthy. If Steven were present, he could tell us all. Where in hell is he at?

  17. Ok stand back.. fresh eggs taste better and are better to bake with. There is absolutely no difference between eggs of different colors. Brown eggs are actually white, the hen deposits the brown color before she lays the eggs. White eggs are white because those hens had the brown coloring genes bred out of them generations ago. Those breeds like the Leghorn are old breeds, so you don't have to worry about genetic engineering blah, blah, blah. You don't need a rooster for eggs, actually hens lay more without a rooster bothering them, older wives can relate to that one lol!!! Free Range eggs will probably have more flavor, some people don't like that. Free Range means they run around outside, Free run means they are not held in cages but could be kept in a barn all the time.
    There good enough Sweetie pie?

    1. Yes...i am happy tootes with that satisfactory answer. I knew you'd know. I just like all the pretty hues in the basket...and they do taste better.

  18. Oh, if you don't believe me that Brown eggs are actually white eggs, after you break your egg, the inside is white.. not brown. Green and blue eggs are something different, that's their true color, they are green and blue on the inside.

  19. I agree with others proper eggs are so much better than the ones in the supermarket. When I am home next month I hope my brother's hens are a-laying.
